Thoughts - since I've been to Italy a number of times. 1. Seven days in IT, or any other EU country for that matter, is simply not enough time. Even if I assume you discount the day to travel and the day to return (9 days total), I would strongly suggest a 10 day on the ground itinerary. 2. I think both the northern and souther itinerary as described is biting off too much. My suggestion for the north - fly into Milan (agree that a day here is max), train to Venice (3 days minimum), train to Florence (2 days minimum). Rent a car in Florence and drive through Tuscany (really the only way to see it) for the remainder of the trip. Train back to Milan. For the south - fly into Rome, immediately take the train to Salerno then fast ferry to Amalfi (2 days), ferry to Capri (3 days), ferry to Naples (1 day), train to Rome (4 days). If all the travel on the first day is too exhausting, then spend one night in Rome at the start of the trip. 3. Money exchange. Do not get Euros at your bank in the US. They will charge you for them and it is much cheaper to go to a bank ATM in EU after arriving. Do not use exchange services as you will really get ripped off. 4. Luggage. Agree with you. A carry on and personal item is all you need. Especially in places like Amalfi and Capri where you have to walk up mucho steps to get to your lodging. 5. Tickets. Trains and museums. Agree, get them in advance before you leave. The cost is lower. Trying to buy them for major museums as a walk up is largely impossible in the high season. 6. Food. Agree with your tips. Be careful though, having an impromptu lunch on the steps of many monuments is illegal and can get you a serious fine if caught. 7. Language. I find the basics of Italian to be easy. Learn a few words. They will get you a long way. Good video and good tips.

I'm planning to visite Italy for ten days in August and honestly, your tips are very helpful. They cover pretty much everything and especially those tiny questions you have in the back of your mind, like choosing the right coach before stepping into the train or not bothering to save a penny here and there which reduces the stress level. The pleasure you have doing these videos is also obvious, so thanks for that as well.

I’ve been to Italy 3 times, and will again June of ‘24. After seeing the mandatory tourist/historical/religious sites, my favorite memory is strolling leisurely down the back streets, away from the tourist crowds. Staying in an AirBnB on one of these small lanes can really make you feel like a local, even if for a few days.

We just got home last Monday. You’re tips cover everything and we’re a great help to us! I’d only add to be prepared to walk. We spent 4 days in Londan and 11 days in Italy (Milan, Cinque Terre, Florence, Saturnia, and Rome). Over the trip we walked 99 miles. Calling your bank and cellular company before you travel will make sure they know you are traveling to unlock your phone and allow transactions to go through. Buying a SIM card is a must to get around. Don’t pay more than $30 for one. Google maps will tell you how to get anywhere. Make sure you select the transportation method to get the best routes.

Please get an Airbnb. Its Cheaper and great views you don’t get it from hotels . Lake Como got the best Airbnbs in whole Italy.

4 cities in 7 days is crazy. I just did a week in Italy at the end of a 3 week Eurotrip and I spent 3.5 days in Florence and 3.5 days in Rome and could have stayed longer in both.

What he said about getting Euros from a ATM is 100% true. That is the best option, I walked around Rome with $500 in US dollars… never used it! A credit card for most purchases and restaurants and a debit card to get a couple hundred Euros from the ATM in small bills is all you need. Great video, good job!

Spot on tips, especially luggage! I would add a refillable water bottle to the list so you stay hydrated. I was in Rome; Florence; Milan; Assisi; Tuscany & Cinque Terre and only had a carry on for 18 days-very easy!

Returned recently from a 2 week trip during the end of April/early May. Flew into Florence and spent 3 days there. Took a train to Cinque Terre (stayed in Riomaggiore) for several days and visited all towns in the Cinque Terre area hiking from Corniglia to Vernazza one day. Phenomenal area. Train to Milan for a few days taking a day trip to Lake Como (Bellagio) and a day trip to Venice. Agree with you about Milan. I much prefer Rome over Milan but worked good for the day trips I planned. Train to Rome where I spent the rest of my time in Italy taking a day trip to Naples and Pompeii. My last day in Rome I took a 1/2 day eBike tour group ride (with a small group) on and around Appian Way seeing the remaining portions of the original aquifer that supplied Rome and learning some of the history of that ancient roadway. I travel solely with a 34L backpack and a 15L day pack but stayed in Airbnbs since I prefer staying amongst locals and having a clothes washer. I made sure to rent Airbnbs within a mile from the train station. Next year I plan to spend a couple of weeks in the Amalfi Coast area and some of that will probably include a few days in the eternal city again. Like your tips and recommendations.

I was in Florence 30 days ago. What an amazing city! Spent 6 nights there and it was still not enough time to see everything I wanted. Also went to Pisa and Rome. The food was superb. Trying to go back next year. Let's see what happens.

I recently got the high speed train from Naples to Rome for the day & was very impressed. Been to Florence a couple of times, not sure I got to see the best of the place.

For the South tour, I would recommend Rome > Naples> Bari (Puglia) where visiting Polignano a Mare, Matera and Albero Bello is a must > Positano if you have time :) might as well

We can really recommend the high speed train service, we took the HSTS from Naples to Rome in about an hour and what a great service, so clean. Also learn a little Italian to chat with the locals as you never know what little extras you might get ina restaurant we always had some snack treats between courses when we have dinner in Rome just because I take the trouble to chat a little in Italian. I know Americans take short vacation but I would try to take at least 2 weeks for these itineraries. Alternatively, I would focus on one area (for e.g., Rome, Naples and 1-2 days in Capri and the Amalfi Coast), or in the North, Venice and Florence, or Milan, the Lakes area and Venice.

Compliments on the content, video production quality, and no BS fast pace. 👍 Regarding data plans, I’d skip right to getting a local data SIM. Home carrier roaming rates are a rip off. For voice calls (often needed), I use Skype and get a phone number. It’s useful and cost effective. It also allows me to call my home voicemail.

Just chanced on your vids. I did the south and up way in 2015. My Rome itinerary was wrecked in 2015 though. we were stuck in Paris (30hrs) due to Rome terminal fire. Arrived Rome on the last night of my itinerary. Had to catch booked train to Florence the next morning.

Then it's off to Tuscany (by way of Florence, bulet train per one of your video recommendations), rental car,Livorno leaning tower of pizza,horse back, Vespa, Bocelli concert, then up to Milano (Via bullet train out of Florence) see lake Como, palazzo Reale, Duomo di Milano and that 25,000 sf Starbucks. On most newer phones, most iphones, you can add a second sim card (so that's in addition to your already existing U.S. plan), and that will allow your phone to use a second number on the same phone at the same time, which doesn't affect your U.S. number. They are mostly eSims (electronic) now so no sim card is even inserted. It costs me about $5 for 20G or even more of internet data. In Europe internet is dirt cheap, it's the calling and texting that you are paying for, and for the $5 dollars prepaid card I mentioned, you usually get unlimited talk and text for 30 days (or more if you want). Once you add the second sim card, you turn off the data on your U.S. phone plan (super easy in settings under cellular) and set your phone to use the European eSim for data, and that way you don't pay a dime to your U.S. carrier. The U.S. sim will still let all the U.S. calls through like always if that's what you want (that's the beauty of these dual sim phones). When you call or text, you can have the phone ask you which sim you want to use or set it to default, or even by specific contacts in your phone. It' super easy. Using a U.S. international plan (or by usage) for data on your U.S. sim card is crazy and you are overpaying big time. In the EU many people have two phone numbers on the same phone. Go to a local T-Mobile, Vodafone, or whatever company is popular in the country you are visiting and get a prepaid eSim added to your phone.

Completely agree Gregor - Rome, Florence and Venice are amazing, although I’m yet to visit Milan. Flying there in a few weeks for one night before heading over to the Dolomites to ride the Maratona. Whilst they may not be where most tourists want to visit, the Dolomites are still offer the most spectacular natural scenery in Europe.

A decade ago I did a whistle stop tour of Sicily. Palermo, Enna, Siracusa, Agrigento, Modica, Trapani etc. well, I’ve spent the past decade going back and spending a week at each place I liked, be it a village in the road to San Vito Lo Capo or as last time; Cefalu. Next time I’m fairly sure it will be a week in Siracusa. Why stay so long? To soak. To relax. And also, like that time when the gelato man got to know us so the boy could walk up and he knew it was fragola in briocha. Or when I forgot my wallet at home but the barkeep said I should pay tomorrow as he knew we were there for the week. Find your pastry shop, find your spot on the spiaggia. No way you can see all of the world in a lifetime anyways, best to really find some place you can _know_. One thing for travellers to Italy; enjoy the Italian-ness. Sometimes you have to honk your horn, sometimes you dance in the streets, sometimes those same streets are blocked by striking horse carriages, sometimes you have to shrug your shoulders, sometimes the Guarda di Financa raid the restaurant you are eating at. It’ll always go well and kids are always and in all cases welcome. And learn some Italian.

You forgot to mention Leonardo Da Vinci's "Last Supper", the most famous painting in the world together with his other masterpiece the "Mona Lisa"(unfortunately in Paris). We also have the most famous opera theater in the world: Teatro alla Scala. Then I recommend Accademia di Brera art museum, Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia "Leonardo Da Vinci", Galleria Vittorio Emanuele (known as "the living room of Milan"), Castello Sforzesco next to Parco Sempione with the Arco della Pace, i Navigli, Colonne di San Lorenzo, Piazza Gae Aulenti with the Biblioteca degli Alberi, and there's much more...

I live in Paris, going to Milan for the first time for a weekend. This was a really useful video, thank you. Do you have any tips about taxis? I'll be arriving at Milan Central Station at around 10.30pm, solo female traveller. I always use public transport but this once, first visit, to get to my hotel at that hour, I think a taxi would be easier. Do you know roughly how much a 2.5 km journey might cost, working on your Florentine experience? I know to look for cars with proper taxi signs on the roof. PS Not a fan of Uber. Thanks.

I got lucky, all that walking and eating, I lost 3 pounds and 1 percent body fat. another good advice for Americans, figure out your data plan before you come. meaning I have Tmobile and I could barely get any service at all, especially where your navigating maps and trying to buy tickets outside of your accommodation. I actually purchased a wifi hotspot which gave me 70GB, so me and my girlfriend shared that, it lasted the whole trip and probably got half left which will be waisted. Plan to get a local sims card for your phone if you need service.

We spent 3 weeks in Italy. 1 week each in Naples, Rome, and Florence. downtown Naples(interestingly busy and nice experience), Pompeii, Positano(beautiful), and the Archeological Museum. Rome, stayed right in walking distance from everything. Heart of Rome walk, Colosseum with the Tour Guy, Vatican with The Tour Guy, day trip to Tivoli(worth it). Second part of Rome we stayed in the Prati neighborhood. Quieter and good food, nice airbnb there.(high tech). Florence, Day trip to Pisa, and Lucca. (Worth it). We stayed literaly 4 min from the Academia, and the Duomo, and everything else we’re within walking distances. also went across the river where we saw the palace, the gardens, and ate some good food. Did I say good food? After a while I wanted to start enjoying the meats like lamb and steaks, oh man so juicy, mmm. The main train station was a 11min walk. anyone listening, he has good advice, travel light. CARRY ON ONLY. I cannot stress this enough. I made my next packing list while I was here while things were fresh in my mind with all the things I actually used because I overpacked. I brought a drone, action camera and other accessories, didn’t use them. My phone was the best camera. When I went home and prepacked all of the things I actually used, they all fit in my carryon, just clothes, and hygiene items. I brought a medium check in, and a backpack. Never again. It was hot and we both were struggling. the side walks are narrow, cars, people, bikes, scooters are always, so you need to maneuver quickly. And also had to haul 2 medium suitcases up 61 steps in 2 different airbnbs. Not fun. You will have a wakeup call if you pack heavy, you’re gonna be sweating, and feel embarrassed on uneven streets. Unless you’re getting dropped off at a hotel. In my opinion, I preferred starting in Naples first and working my way north. just my observation, it was lots of trash in Naples, we still enjoyed ourselves. Little less in Rome. They actually had a protest in Rome about this I believe when we were there by the Capitaline Museum on May 19th. Once we got to Florence, it was so much better and they actually had cleaning crews which i never seen in the other places. I am going to blame some of this on tourist, only because in Prati, it was the same but I didn’t see any tourist. But the city could do better knowing these are tourist areas and its just the nature of it. Spend some money to clean up like Florence. Still had a great time, and being all the tourist sights are done, next time I can chill and experience some local things with the locals hopefully.
