Quite important to dismantle the Ajax for servicing. They are between 45 and over 80 years old. The ratchet in the rear roller needs to be cleaned out and regreased and the bearings on the cutter are easily damaged by in situ grinding like this (I've known it happen twice). Otherwise you might as well stick to lapping the knives and bottom plate with grinding paste. Indeed, Ransomes supplied a 'grinding pin' for that purpose. It screws into the largest of the 3 gears and you use it to run the machine in reverse with paste on the blades.

+freeganjustin I completely agree, but when you quote for splitting an Ajax and servicing it properly customers often falls over, once we have put them in the recovery position and offered a cheaper alternative that seems to keep them happy. I'd sooner do the job properly every time.. We have two more Ajax in at the moment, one is a mk1 all original including paint!! Thanks for the comments, much appreciated.

Hi there. I have just bought a Ransomes Ajax mk 5 and I’m looking to do a spin grind on the cylinder. What attachment/drive do I need for Bernard express dual grinders?
