A drum guru once told me: “you can make cheap drums sound good with a little effort and time, but cheap cymbals will sound terrible for all time.”

The Custom K became a K. Constantinople on top lol. That modification helped me understand why some cymbals come with partial lathing. The unlathed portion still "roars" underneath the brightness of the lathed surface. Thank you for sharing your expertise!

It's nuts how it looks like a K Con and is about the same weight as a K Con Medium, but it sounds much nicer than any K Con Medium. The stick sound is so much better than my K Con and on almost any other I've heard.

I just got a Dream Flat Earth 20" flat ride with that tiny bell. I woukd not change anything on it. So dont trash an entire line. As you know cymbals are like art. To the ear of the beholder. All of us have different tastes. And obviously the type of music we wish to create plays a huge role.
@ReverieDrumCo

My intention is not to trash an entire line (I’ve played many Dreams I thought sounded fantastic). It’s more of my commentary on a particular set up/design that can have major drawbacks if not made well.

What a fabulous video. Every cymbal you worked on improved in my view. I really don't like to criticize a brand but I play in a college jazz ensemble that has Dream Bliss cymbals. To me, they sound like playing sheet metal. They have a very dissonant wash and poor definition that I find very unmusical for traditional jazz. Years ago local music stores would carry multiple copies of a cymbal so you could personally select the sound you want. I find the Dream cymbals are so variable, I simply can't imagine or recommend anyone buying one without listening to it in person at a local store. I'm finding it harder to find music/percussion shops that stock multiple copies of a given cymbal model. IT is great to know there are folks like you that can fix cymbal problems.

Yeah, I agree. They do have a wide variance between each cymbal. The benefit is the price point. If you find a good one they are super cheap! Thanks for watching!

Hi Timothy! I've been checking your vids out and really dig them. I've also been in communication with Craig Lauritsen, checking his stuff out. I just bought a Wuhan 16" blank, bought 16 and 24oz hammers and shaped them, got a hunk of 1040 round steel for the anvil. How do you know when you are getting close to over-working the metal? I've done 2 rounds of hammering top and bottom but it's still warbly. Last round was yesterday so it's resting today. I don't have a lathe so I can't do much as far as weight removal goes. Have you done anything using sandpaper for weight removal? Do you have videos of you doing the hammering? Thanks Timothy!
@ReverieDrumCo
@ReverieDrumCo Жыл бұрын
Hey! It takes more than you think to overwork the metal. I would pay more attention to the shape than to how dense or sparse your hammering is. Take a look at the overall height of the piece. If it's getting tall and the more work you do the less the metal moves, then it's time to cool it and/or put it aside to rest for a day or two. Also I use sandpaper on my lathe all the time. Not sure if I would try to treat the surface without a lathe though.

Great. Another reason to not want to play my rides. Lol > just purchased an Istanbul 20 Agop special edition jazz ride. The humming is killing this ride. Any ideas? It's really nice minus that factor.
@ReverieDrumCo
@ReverieDrumCo Жыл бұрын
Is the hum in a particular area? If so a piece of tape can help. The best way is to balance the tuning via hammering. Those turkish-made cymbals (even the really expensive ones) aren't always well balanced to minimize hums.

Very educating video! But my thoughts are that different cymbals start individual and different sounding and after mod end up closer in sound, ie. more sounding alike. That isn’t necissarily bad, but it narrows the spectrum that you can achieve playing cymbals… And my main question becomes; why buy a cymbal that you do not like or need the sound on? There are all kind of cymbals out there in the big world and there are certainly ones more complex, lower pitched, trashier and suited for low volume etc. Why but different coloured trousers when you will dye them dark blue anyway? Just a thought…
@ReverieDrumCo
@ReverieDrumCo Жыл бұрын
Fair enough! I think the main reason people send me cymbals to modify because buying cymbals is not an easy task. You really have to play them in person to get a sense of how they actually sound. Cymbal companies marketing is also somewhat deceptive and the way in which a cymbal is recorded can be misleading. As for them "sounding the same", this video was recorded on my phone so the audio compression is eliminating the nuances from each. It's probably also that I have a particular sound in mind and taste, so I aim for what I want to hear from the mod. Thanks for the comment!
@peterhansson7967

@@ReverieDrumCo I fully agree that the ”big brand’s” classification leaves a lot to chance when buying… I go by the rule; test it and if it doesn’t suit me, let some else have it 😇 I suspected that recording and compression left out the differences, nuances and over all compexity. A recording seldom do sound full justice. And of course you should make and mod cymbals to your preferences… that will be/is your trade mark 😎

I actually don’t like instanbul Agop as a brand. I have always noticed that their cymbals just miss the mark for me, with everything. Especially with any crash cymbal and hi hats I’ve tried out at the music store. They all sound clunky in a bad way, the cymbals I played had a terrible stick feel.

The first one sound lower to me after the hammering. Weird. Maybe it's a wash pitch change thats harder to hear.
@ReverieDrumCo
@ReverieDrumCo 5 ай бұрын
Yeah that's common. The hammering is breaking up the shimmery highs which makes the overall sound darker and lower.

Hi , I'm a drummer love Sabian actually but do use Zildjian or Paiste from time to time. Anyway I wanted to see if you might be able to make a copy of Sabian's AA 14" Sizzle Hat's ? They use B20 for the them and have 8 rivets in the bottom hat in a brilliant finish weighting at around 1200g for the top and 15 or 1600g for the bottom. Would it be possible for you to make 1 for a customer ? Saul 👍 🥁
@ReverieDrumCo
@ReverieDrumCo Жыл бұрын
Hey Saul, Yeah that’s definitely possible! My “brilliant” finish looks a bit different than Zildjian or Sabian’s, mainly because I don’t have the industrial buffing tools they have. However I can get a nice looking brilliant finish and I can certainly make hihats in that weight range with the rivets on the bottom. I have a cymbal commission form on my website where you can order custom cymbals. Here’s the link! reveriedrums.com/cymbalcommissions
