Today I'd like to discuss what it's REALLY like to be an Orthodox Jew in America, as well as react to Unorthodox on Netflix. I feel like Orthodox Jews are so misrepresented in Hollywood, and Netflix shows like Unorthodox don't necessarily reflect what it's really like to be an Orthodox Jew. So here's my 2 cents that no one asked for xD

This is a great video! When Unorthodox came out, I was spending a year in a fellowship through my university’s center for religion. It was an interfaith fellowship focused on education and activism, and it was amazing. One of our fellows is Orthodox Jewish and wrote a super thought-provoking article about the impact of mainstream media’s presentation of Orthodox Judaism on Orthodox Jews. From being treated as a victim of a vicious patriarchal cult to being pitied as a weak woman to even being seen as a violent extremist, she has dealt with real fallout as an Orthodox Jewish woman as a result of the constant negative portrayal of Orthodox Judaism. Especially here in Wisconsin where there is not a large Jewish population to begin with, and the Orthodox communities are very small. So she is the one Orthodox Jew most of her acquaintances will ever meet, meaning it is her (undeserved) burden to be the one person to break down the stereotypes perpetuated in the media. That’s not to say people shouldn’t critique their own communities, which clearly isn’t what your video is saying, despite the negative comments. But how many genuinely positive portrayals of Orthodox Judaism exist that offset the negative ones? I’m a Hellenistic neopagan and we have a somewhat similar deal happening, where there are very few of us, and yes, some of our communities boast harmful ideals. But the only portrayals of neopagans tend to be that we’re cultists and neonazis, which has real world consequences for us as people. Whenever I see a video or article like this, I think about when Unorthodox came out and in seminar that week, she looked so tired from having to defend her culture against multiple rude, bigoted, and inappropriate comments and questions that she’d been approached with. She explains in her article exactly what you did here, that it’s not that this particular show told one woman’s difficult story. It’s that this one negative, stereotypical narrative is the one glimpse of Orthodox Judaism most people will see, and this is the trope that is repeated over and over and over again every time Orthodox Judaism is mentioned, with little to no break in that terrifying, culty, inaccurate, monotony.

As someone who is Jewish, I loved this show. This show shows a very specific group of Hasidic Jews, Satmar.. The story is based upon Deborah Feldman experience, and they absolutely nailed their traditions and the whole atmosphere… You’re right that this show doesn’t represent even a small amount of the Jewish community. This story just shows the one girl, in one group. And it never claimed to be anything else.

thats really cool, thank you for sharing your perspective!! I personally disliked the show, I think they didn't fully manage to get the atmosphere or many of the details right (wigs, costumes, accents, wedding scene were all a little off). I agree however, that this was one woman's story who shouldn't be invalidated. I do have a problem with the choice of story Netflix chooses to continually represent us in. Why can't we have a Black Panther, a Crazy Rich Asians, a Never Have I Ever, or a Bridgerton? Why must we always be represented in the most oppressive lens possible when people already know next t nothing about our culture? That is a bias I am not willing to overlook.

Late to this party: but as unorthodox was based on a memoir, could it be that they were showing and depicting things from Esty’s perspective. If you feel a lot of pressure, then a wedding could seem bleak, rather than the amazing party we have seen. I think nuance is something we lack here, too. I definitely appreciate what you’re saying, and that the stereotypes are tiresome. Maybe it was showing her view of the community (not that it isn’t detrimental to those that live there). Not necessarily the truth, but her own truth. It would be another thing to show the other side, of course.

As an atheist outsider watching unorthodox, I was under no illusion that the show was depicting modern orthodox Jewish life. It wasn’t supposed to be a moderate, light depiction of Jewish life, it was a drama, and was so beautifully acted. My take home was this was a tragic story of generational trauma and psychological damage stemming from the holocaust that manifested as a cult like take on religion. I really enjoyed watching it , it made me think,and it motivated me to learn more about Judaism and in part led me here to your channel :)

this is an interesting take! I agree, it was beautifully acted, and if I wanted to look at the show just as its own thing, I would have commended the show runners for a good casting and writing job. Though overall it was pretty unrealistic and the production design was terrible in terms of accuracy. But, Because this deals with minorities, we can't simply look at it as a form of art, but also how this story impacts the community, perceptions of Judaism in the media, and Netflix's own bias in the stories they choose to tell about Judaism. One thing that was glaring was the ethnocentric lens they put over everything. Female inequality was a huge issue in the show. That truly shows me that this was written by non religious / non jewish Americans as this is an issue prevalent in American society, and less so in Orthodox Jewish circles. my last point is that I'm not modern Orthodox, I'm ultra Orthodox. There isn't much separating me from most Hassidic jews I know. Satmar is definitely on the stricter side, but even they have a spectrum which this show failed to give over. idk I can talk all day about this but ultimately, thank you for your insightful comment!

@@CynicalDuchess Thanks for sharing your point! I just watched it and I was looking around the see what other orthodox jews or the "jewish community" (i know its very divers) say about it. I am not jewish and never had a lot of contact with jewish people and jewish life but I grew up in a very very strict christian sect (i would it call that way) and the show reminded me so much of my childhood. So the take away for me was not the portrayal of orthodox judaism but the dynamics of a very small community that wants to have a lot of control about its members and especially the women. I think it doesnt matter wheter these communities are christian, muslim or jewish bc its not at all about religion, its about power and control. So the religious teachings and the traditions arent the problem, the problem is the control of every aspect of the members lifes and the shame and stigma those in power create if someone doesnt follow the rules. This is what sets such communities apart from strict religious people in general. And I really loved the portrayal of the womens condition called vaginismus, because in my community many women suffered from it and they were so ashamed to talk about it bc everything around sex and the body was such a taboo. I actually read a study that found that women from communities where sexuality is shamed and not spoken about have a higher risk to suffer from vaginismus! So I really liked that they incorporated that and talked about it openly.

Same I didn't think anything bad about the religion after I watched the show I just thought it was a group of people who were so scared that they were hurting their own. Which happens in many families and communities. I feel like her review of the show was very biased and dismissive. Even though I have Jewish friends and been to israel. It made me want to learn more so I can have a better understanding with no judgment. honestly wish she would have seen this show for what it was because I'm sure their are women who still might be going through this so it's a bit insensitive to the writer's experience. There are definitely sects and cults in every religion. She could have used this platform to get them help. Now it just looks like these bad things that happened don't exist or that it's so small it doesn't matter because of the vast majority.

One important and positive thing Unorthodox did is bring Yiddish forth onto a mainstream platform, it helped spark interest in the language itself. I know I watched the show pretty much just because of that, and even though there are hiccups here and there I myself am thankful they did it, as a linguist and Yiddish researcher (Shtisel does some of the same thing, but more inside Jewish communities and less internationally). Like I'm sure as an Iraqi you and your family might appreciate Farewell Baghdad (The Dove Flyer) which highlighted the Jewish Baghdadi dialect and Jewish Arabic and helped preserve it. So with all the justified criticism I still think it had some positive and important aspects.

All I see from this video is this: _I_ did not experience this and therefore this show is misrepresenting my experience, and the experience of some of the hassidic people I know. You did a great job describing the variety of Orthodoxy and I think it's important for people to realize that unorthodox doesn't represent all of orthodoxy. But don't act as if Unorthodox is a crime against you, and don't downplay the authenticity. This is a real, it happens. And because you are privileged enough for that to not have been the case, don't act insulted about it. You can show the variety and other parts of the Orthodox spirit without having to downplay the experience of a community you seem to not know anything about.
@CynicalDuchess
@CynicalDuchess 2 жыл бұрын
"the experience of a community you seem to not know anything about" -- I'll just refer you to the pinned comment. When misrepresentation occurs, it does affect me. Because it slanders my culture as a whole, it has concerned non jewish friends DMing me at odd hours asking if this is what I really go through. I will downplay the authenticity because the show is inauthentic. for the reasons I mentioned in the video. Are there extremists jews out there? sure. But why is that the first thing being represented to a world that knows nothing about us?
@cloakedsniper5016
@cloakedsniper5016 2 жыл бұрын
@@CynicalDuchess Look this, movie is not inauthentic. Almost everything you see there does happen, and it's not just "extremist Jews." We're talking about something of the order of at least 50,000 Jews (this is a conservative estimate based off of attendance at 'extremist' religious events, average hassidic family sized). That is a huge amount and therefore is a fully legitimate source to make movies and stories about -- I do think however there is a lot of room for Hassidic stories that do not necessarily paint everything in negative light. But that doesn't mean what was represented was inauthentic. Also I think just like you feel that Unorthodox mis-characterized your way of life, it is also a big mis-characterization to assume your modern Orthodox lifestyle has any equivalence to the Hasidic lifestyle. It is not two versions of the same things. I spent time in the Hassidic Community and the Modern Orthodox and the mindset and lifestyle are extremely far apart. Granted you can find Hassidic members who do have a more 'modern orthodox lifestyle' and here about their experience, but that doesn't negate what the leaders say, the values that many members do have, what is considered the expected norm, or the type of yeshivas they send their kids to and the education they receive. So to reiterate: Modern Orthodoxy and Hassidism are massively different, and there is very little equivalency between the two. If people confuse that then great, we should do a better job educating them. But that doesn't take away from the reality of what is for many the Hassidic experience.
@CynicalDuchess
@CynicalDuchess 2 жыл бұрын
@@cloakedsniper5016 Look we can argue about this for days. I've also spent time in the Hassidic community. I've worked in Hassidic schools, lived with chassidic people. I'm also not modern Orthodox. At all. I am Bais Yaakov, Blackhat. at the end of the day, its neither up to you nor me to settle something like this. it's up to people from Satmar. But even then, you're gonna have a hard time trying to stuff every satmar chassid into a box. because there is a spectrum. The people I consulted for this video were Stulin, Pupa, and Veen, which is Satmar affiliated. You can go around and around trying to find people with this experience, and I can counterpoint you with examples of people who had the opposite. The point being, this is one story that does not represent the majority-- which is a colorful spectrum of varied experiences.

@@CynicalDuchess I fully agree with your last point. I think there absolutely should be movie and shoes showing the Hassidic/Ultra Orthodox community in a positive light. There is room for Peter Santenello's series, which overall I loved. There is Shtisel. Also Menashe (although I think that movie is actually very depressing and drabby, and I feel it mis-characterized the hassidic experience a bit. But at least they tried). I really liked The Vigil. So there is media out there showing a better side. Anyways, yes. Every negative experience will have a positive counterpoint and vice versa, which is why I don't think it is correct to claim Unorthodox is inauthentic. Rather advocate for more positive media to give a more balanced perspective. Also for the record, I really disliked My Unorthodox Life lol

I've only seen one episode of Unorthodox, and I was quite shocked by it because it wasn't at all what I had comes across during my research of Judaism. I looked up, and it is a true story, however I look at it as one woman's story where belonging to her specific sect of Orthodox Judaism didn't work out for her due to her severe mistreatment by those in her specific community. I don't think there's anything wrong with telling these sort of stories, but I do agree that it's a very oversaturated type of storytelling when it comes to Jewish women, and that there needs to be better representation of all Jewish stories from all sects and backgrounds. Unfortunately, Hollywood would make you think that Jewish people only have roots in Eastern Europe and are only Hasidic Orthodox or completely secular.

I also growing up in ny noticed that the wigs that were used in this movie was very very similar to what I was used to seeing.. and only more recently there are different lengths and textures.. also doing my research on the movie the costume director had a hard time finding the fur hats that were not too expensive, so unfortunately they had to be made from a cheaper material..

I feel like something to keep in mind is that this was based on someone’s ACTUAL life. And it isn’t meant to represent everyone or speak for everyone. It’s more meant to show her specific journey like a documentary type situation. It’s just telling her story specifically so of course it wouldn’t be the same as everyone else’s so I don’t like when ppl say “oh this isn’t what my life was like, this wasn’t my situation, this isn’t what it’s actually like”. I feel like ppl forget that just bc something didn’t happen to you doesn’t make it any less valid or real. In this case Netflix didn’t get anything “wrong” as ppl seem to say. They told her story and in a beautiful way for it being a temporary series. I’m glad she got the opportunity to share her story to a wider audience than her book did.

Hey there! So what you say, that this is supposed to represent someones life, is exactly what I'm trying to stress. People talk a lot about cultural representation-- and the correct way to do it. I know that I have many Indian and East Asian friends that hate the way they are represented in the media, because when people don't know much about a culture, they tend to assume what they see on screen is correct. But when the only thing shown on screen are stereotypes, then the entire culture becomes misrepresented, which Is exactly what happened with Unorthodox and other films of its ilk. Please remember that this was loosely based off of her life story, she never ran away to Berlin to join a music conservatory in real life, her husband and whatever that other freak was never chased her halfway across the world, and if they can make those things up, they can certainly makeup or embellish other aspects of her life-- like the way chassidic people treat women, the way they dress, their views on feminism-- which are the discrepancies I attempted to show with testimonies from real chassidic and orthodox women. I'm happy that you can see this TV show doesn't represent an entire culture, but many people do not see that.

Observing shabbat is one thing many people find odd and difficult that is just part of my life and I love it! I describe it to people as 2 Thanksgiving meals every week (Friday dinner and Saturday for lunch), lots of quality time to hang out with friends or family, read, talk, play games, go for a walk...all without distractions from electronic devices. Btw, I went to a professional conference and the non-Jewish speaker was talking about how taking a 24 hour electronics break is super healthy for mental well-being. I guess God was really ahead of the times 😉. The other tough thing for me was keeping kosher. Both on campus and as a working adult, the separation from my friends and colleagues that comes from not eating the same food was really hard for me, a constant struggle. I made it work, but that doesn't mean it was easy.

I agree that there is a conversation to be had about the representation of people in minority groups and there is an overwhelming amount of media that portrays religious Jews in a negative light, but it is important to acknowledge that while the media should display positive perspectives of those who live religious lifestyles, it is just as important to acknowledge the stories of people like the protagonist in Unorthodox. To say that all Hasidic Jews value quality and luxury is very broad generalization, especially since it is very expensive to be a Hasidic Jew. Glatt Kosher meat and Cholov Yisroel dairy products aren't cheap, not to mention how most Hasidic families typically have 4+ kids to feed. Many Hasidic Jews are on welfare and struggle to keep their large families afloat. While the Lubavitch community (and perhaps the Borough Park Hasidic community that you mentioned, I'm not familiar with it personally) are more open minded, many Hasidic communities carry isolationist mentalities that prevent children from learning secular studies among other damaging things. It is amazing how you balance your religious life in this secular world and audiences have a lot to learn from your experiences, but that doesn't mean that positive experiences like yours are the only ones that should be discussed.
@CynicalDuchess
@CynicalDuchess 2 жыл бұрын
I like this answer, very balanced. I think issues do have a place to be discussed, but only with people who understand the nuance of the culture, who are actually looking to improve things, not vilify. Just like you don't go to a stranger and complain about your failing marriage, you go to a trusted friend or counselor who understand everything that took place before the marriage started to fail. we can only discuss jewish issues in big media once there are better representations of how the majority of Chassidic / Orthodox Jews live, so that these outlying stories can be discussed as what they really are -- outlying stories.

Thank you for taking the time and energy to educate people! I learn so much from you, Batsheva! One thing that I value as a Swede is a closeness to nature (I also come from a more traditionally Swedish family), and having easy access to it basically anywhere you go in Sweden. My grandparents swam (often naked and early, before anyone else had woken up) in the lake every morning before breakfast and so does my mom and aunt, from April to September! All Swedish cities that are coastal or by a big lake have swimming places all over, even in the city. I miss that here in Boston! Here you have to pay to get onto some beaches and the water in the city is dirty. I don't mean at all to say Americans don't value nature, but in Sweden it's less privatized and more easily accessible I think.

I can sympathise with your frustrations of misrepresenting your culture and I do think not all orthodox are as extreme as in the documentary. However it is based on a real story from someone's experiences and struggles, is there not a lot of value to be gained from seeing the problems that arise from certain orthodox communities? She was not the only one who had to run away from such abuse, it might not be incredibly widespread but it does seem to be noticeably problematic. Not to mention it is a story about a personal journey, not meant to portray all of orthodox Judaism or even all of Hasidism, but of one woman from one community who unfortunately are quite controlling. Although it is unfortunate many people do take it as a representation of all of orthodoxy.
@CynicalDuchess
@CynicalDuchess 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for commenting! So I know it's easy to believe what you see in movies and TV shows, but the thing about media is that they like to fictionalize and sensationalize. The truth is that you don't come from these communities. You don't know people in these communities, nor do I think you've hung out in households from these communities. Otherwise you wouldn't call them extreme. Trauma exists in every society. The racist problem that exists within Hollywood, is that they like to cherrypick and stereotype cultures based off of sensationalized stories that don't represent even the Satmar community represented in the show. And to downplay this fact, to delegitimize the stereotyping that goes on in Hollywood when it comes to Orthodox and Hasidic Jews-- Is straight up gaslighting. While the show was based off of real experiences, Feldman admitted to being pressured by producers to sensationalize her story for Unorthodox. In reality, Feldman would go to the public library to check out novels every week and was way more exposed to secular culture than she lets on in the show. The problem is that there is not a single positive depiction of Hasidic Judaism in the media. Or the news for that matter. And that should give you little warning bells that the way Hasidic Jews are portrayed is not that accurate. Which is a huge issue. I'm not saying that there aren't people who are judgmental or Abusive-- humans aren't perfect. But if you look at any culture, no matter how developed, western, progressive it is-- you're going to find trauma and abuse and issues. Because unfortunately that is the kind of world we live in. I mean, if you look at all the sexual assault cases on college campuses, you'd come to a conclusion that American college boys are all a bunch of rapists. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but to characterize an entire group of people by the actions of an outlying minority is an issue. It's just that Hasidic Jews don't speak up for themselves in the media, so there is no one to defend the negative way they are portrayed in the media.
@beepmeep3258
@beepmeep3258 3 жыл бұрын
@@CynicalDuchess thanks for responding! I completely agree with you, but I do think being an outsider I can be a tad more objective since I don't have a stake in the game. Holywood unfortunately do tend to sensationalise but I think there's a grain of truth about how some communities funciton. Even if they are rare they do need to be shed light on. Yeah Feldman was probably inflienced, but she's not the only one who wanted to flee the community, they are other examples in the news too. Nonethess I agree that the Hasidic Jews probably aren't the issue and they should be more positive representation. Basically I think there should be more of a balance but there are significant problems that should be looked at Edit: I don't think orthodoxy is extreme, my apologies for the odd phrasing of words, I meant that netflix probably dialed up the extremism factor which every religion does have.
@CynicalDuchess
@CynicalDuchess 3 жыл бұрын
@@beepmeep3258 The one thing that I will agree with you is that if there is an issue, it should be discussed. However. The fact that you are an outsider is the precise reason why you don't really have the right to make judgement on a culture you really don't understand. You don't understand the cultural nuance of things nor why they do what they do. All you have been exposed to are news articles written by outsiders who also are just as ignorant about the culture, and who are writing from a biased and ethnocentric-western lens. You mention that all religion has some form of extremism. I will assert that every culture has people who take their beliefs to the extreme. To me, from an Orthodox Jewish point of view, people who have casual sex, wear bralettes in public and binge on alcohol to the point of blackout is also very extreme. But because I don't belong to that culture, I don't have a right to comment on this behavior. Because I don't understand the cultural nuance, nor the reasons behind why they would do such things. I'm not saying you're wrong-- there is definitely a need to shed light on people's hardships. But Just as there are people who stopped being religious because they felt it wasn't for them, there are people who joined the community as well. My cousin is just such a person. she grew up secular but chose to be Hasidic and now is married with 3 kids. she's really really happy. My parents as well-- grew up not keeping kosher, not knowing anything about judaism, but they discovered it in their 30's, became religious, got married and had me. If you want to know more, I recommend the channel Jew In The City, as well as some of the videos by Peter Santenello. Also look up Maayan Zik-- she's a black Hasidic convert and recently got covered by Vogue for her Hasidic led BLM rally. Also Nisim black-- he's a Black Hasidic rapper living in Jerusalem. he's originally from the projects in Seattle. I just want you to understand that you won't know the true culture until you talk to some Satmar Jews yourself. Ask them if they are happy, and how they feel about how they are presented in the media. Then you'll earn the right to a true opinion that I will respect.

So I also grew up in the Orthodox community in LA but I totally disagree with you. After talking with a lot of Satmir people, or formerly Satmir people, it seems to me that unorthodox is pretty accurate for that community. I wish they hadn't named it "unorthodox," but the story needed to be told. The chassidish community in New York is really different and so much more extreme than anything I could have ever imagined, even someone who grew up Orthodox in LA. I was told that chassidim consider Modern Orthodox people to be the same as non-Jews, because of the level of interaction with the outside world. They specifically have rules about only wearing short wigs, as long ones are considered immodest. And this is the vast majority of NY chassidim. They also don't even consider Chabad to be real Chassidish because they are so liberal relative to other chassidish sects. Most chassidim in NY are extremely strict.

I'm an Indian Singaporean Jew and I attend the local Maghain Aboth synagogue here in Singapore, which is a mix of Ashkenazi and Sephardi. I love going to the synagogue as it gives me a peace of mind and for the spiritual ambience. Also I'm passionate about Physics and plan on getting a degree in Physics.

HI. I just want to how I appreciate your videos all of the different ones that I have seen. This particular one is a favorite. I completely agree with what you said about movies, films or even "documentaries" can be miss leading because the portrayal is not totally true to how the real aspects of your faith (diverse sects) and families reality. I can say this is true about most faiths, cultures and lives led in all parts of the world. The statement of do not believe everything you see or hear is completely realistic. I am a born and raised NY'ker and I lived around the Jewish Community in Brooklyn, NY for the better part of my youth to young adult (23 y.o). I am a Muslim and I had and have friends to this day that are still close and are very much supportive and appreciate our respect and for each others friendship throughout the 30 years. We choose to be friends and hope to continue through our journey in this life and world shared with all of the people in this world. We are all part humanity and we should try to get along regardless of the diverse walks of life. Growing up in a city that allowed me to live close and in the neighborhood in Brooklyn with Jewish practicing their faith and knowing we were at peace and neighbors gave us an appreciation towards each other in our neighborhood. Respect and peace is what I grew up with and taught my children to have respect towards our "neighbors" because that is how we should view those around us. Treat them as we would want to be treated. I understand that this may not always be the case throughout the world, but it is what I learned and I hope my children would be of the same thinking. Hate is learned not something we are born with. Yes differences are a part of life but those differences should be a opportunity to learn from each other to improve the world we share, not make it a way to be hateful towards those who are different, by faith or cultural backgrounds. Peace and respect for all, that is my philosophy for my life.🙏🤲🇮🇱⛪🕌🤝

Great Video! I am Christian but grew up near one of the biggest Hasidic Jewish communities in the UK. It wasn’t until I moved to the the capital (London) I realised their are so many different Jewish groups. I also traced my ancestry dna and realised I have Jewish European ancestors.When I first watched the show I immediately knew they were exaggerating the Jewish community and painting it completely different. Even the Hasidic ones that lived near me we’re never mean or rude always polite.

yah, honestly people are people. in every culture you're gonna find funny people, shy people, loud people, obnoxious people, super sweet people. the clothes we choose to wear and the food we choose to eat, these things are all so superficial compared to what really matters about humanity. at the end of the day, we're really all the same.

That was awesome and something that I wanted to share with non Jewish friends for so long. I feel like what they liked about Unorthodox is the "quirky-ness" so there is not so much interest when I tell them that Hassidim are "normal people". Thinking about it now, I should recommend them to watch Menashe (2017) as a follow up

What I took away from watching Unorthodox is that the community portrayed is a close-knit and warmhearted place to live, but with little tolerance for the people who decide that they don't want to follow the traditions and rules any more... and watching this video hasn't really changed my mind on that. Your experience and the experience of your Hasidic friends is from the perspective of being happy to live by traditional rules and expectations; what about the voices of those who are not? You're giving examples of career women who can pursue their dreams while continuing to live within the "rules" of their family and community, but what would the outcome be if they wanted to go further and reject their traditional upbringing entirely? That is what the series was about to me. I fully agree that more diverse representation of the orthodox jewish community (or just the jewish community in general) is very much needed, but that doesn't by itself mean that doesn't invalidate the real lived experience represented in the show or mean they shouldn't be portrayed. Part of ackowledging the diversity of orthodox jewish culture is accepting its diversity - including all the less positive aspects portrayed in Unorthodox! Hopefully the next show will have a different, more positive perspective.

My friend just graduated from MIT. she grew up Satmar, and is now atheist and completely not religious. she has a great relationship with her parents and visits them often during breaks. one of my own family members isn't doing too well religiously currently. I still love them all the same. each family deals with change differently. Vice verse, I have many friends who have converted to judaism / became religious from super secular homes, and their "accepting" and "progressive" parents often take it in different ways. Some learn to work with their children, others cast them aside and make their life miserable. (I know one such 19 year old girl in such a situation). Intolerance/tolerance to childrens different paths is not a jewish thing. its a human nature thing. its all about what kind of person and parent you want to be. and you'll find bad/amazing parents wherever you go.

I'm glad you didn't throw "ultra-orthodox" Judaism under the bus as well. I've seen some videos of religious Jews who tried to defend "modern-Orthodox" because of the anti-orthodox agenda of netflix, and they end up saying that they're not like "them" (hasidic Jews). For example, "Jew in the city" host was very weak in my opinion and I think ended up hurting more than helping.

It just doesn't serve anyone to put down another culture. we all have different spheres of normalcy, but it doesnt mean any of us are right. Western people keep their shoes on in the house, asian people don't. doesn't make one worse than the other, just different. Also I am Ultra Orthodox, not modern!

I find jew in the city often has a slight negative bias toward chassidim.. at the end of the day she helps ex chassidim find their footing in other orthodox societies, which is great. She hears a lot of their sad stories so she doesn't either see the full spectrum of things when it comes to chassidish culture. She openly admits this.

@@m.b.9701 great so I'm not crazy and others see it too. It's kind of like she is giving in to a portion of terrorist demands to make herself seem more credible. I would like to see her highlight and show how beautiful the chasidic/haredi community is like Beril Solomon and the Cynical Duches does.

Shit, I learned more from this video than the Jewish vloggers I watch. Great job! When you say you don’t touch men, does that include handshakes? Because some religions include handshakes as well.

thank you so much! Handshakes are according to embarrassment quotient, so if I'm in a place and it seems like it'll really embarrass the person if I can't shake their hand, and there's not much time to explain, I'll shake, but its something I try to avoid.
