Dutch is the main villain, and i explain in my point of view why: Dutch is egocentric and manipulative. Even if Micah wasn't the rat, the gang's fate would likely be the same, and that's because Micah knew how to feed Dutch's inflated ego. Arthur and Hosea put the well-being of the gang members ahead of their egos, while Dutch, even when he seemed to be altruistic, was only doing that to convince himself that he was some kind of misunderstood hero (like when Hosea say to not rob the Cornwall train and Dutch didn't give a shit). Arthur and Charles were aware that they (the Van Der Linde gang) were just bandits, while Dutch fantasized that they were good rebels fighting the system, and justified their violence and lack of scruples behind a supposed need (Heidi McCourt and the old woman in Guarma, also Eagle Flies and the young wapiti men). When confronted about his actions Dutch had no shame in lying, saying that it was necessary or that he had no choice (abandoning Arthur in the Oil Field, for example). To what extent did he do this consciously or pathologically? It's hard to say. But he has always been a villain, the difference is that in RDR 1 (which I played even before 2) he no longer tries to maintain the fantasy that he is an American Robin Hood.

Guys, I was thinking, and I think Dutch was a little misunderstood in chapter 6, look: Arthur condemned Dutch's idea of using the Indians as a distraction, but the gang was almost being captured and they needed to do everything to survive ( think, if a person steals food to survive, is he wrong?). At that moment the gang was unable to help anyone, at that moment they needed to help themselves, otherwise they would die, so Dutch wasn't so wrong in using the Indians, as survival was what mattered most at that moment. Also, in chapter 6, Dutch's plan was finally working, they had pulled off their last heist and were fleeing to New York to get on a boat and go to Tahiti, but everything went wrong when Arthur discovered that Micah was the traitor. I know that some of Dutch's actions are completely wrong, like when he lets Arthur and John die, but even so, Dutch acted much more intelligently in chapter 6 than in the rest of the game (apart from him trusting Micah).

This. 100% This. The sole reason why he helped all these stranded souls he enrolled in his gang when they were young and vulnerable is so that they would be eternally grateful, accountable, submissive and dependable. He wants them to venerate and obey him like a guru. Also, there is also always the need for "one last big heist", but is there, though? you really start to wonder if all these really are about providing for the gang or just about feeding his frenzy, madness and greediness.

@@madamem.2313110% if you take into consideration a pre-game event mentioned in Arthur’s journal. The gang found good land in the west that would have suited them down to the ground, they were about to purchase it but then Dutch came in with sone bull about having a bad feeling about the place feeling like they were being watched and had the gang turn it down. Now did Dutch actually get a bad feeling about the place? Or maybe Dutch realised if they took the land, his war would be over cause everyone wise would happily settle down

So true. There are many things going into this but one specific thing I've noticed is, that the gang is pretty progressive in their view. The women around the camp get their respect and only Micah seems to be a racist. The Gang is a peak example of a diverse cast, yet everyone gets along pretty well even in 1899. Arthur even seems to be ok with the idea of women voting, he takes much more issue with voting itself.

The main villain was time. Everyone involved in the old way of life was on the way out some tried to force the world around them to stay in the old ways and the rest assimilated willingly or not. Dutch's ego wanted him to go out on his terms and it ruined the lives of everyone in the gang. Quite honestly I felt everything Milton said was a lie to destroy the gang from the inside. It was a win/win situation for him. Get them to fight each other while you catch them being careless and arrest/kill them.

Micah talked, man. Not the whole time, not while they were running. In fact, he didn’t wanna destroy the gang, just make it safer for him. He wanted to hide behind these capable people because like Hosea said “A lone wolf don’t last long out on the plains. Everyone feels that. Even someone like Micah.” ESPECIALLY someone like Micah. He’s a coward. There’s a camp encounter where Micah is talking about getting rid of the weak like uncle and the girls and that mf Swanson. Uncle tells him to shut up, Micah snaps back with “No I will not shut up!” He says it like he actually cares. At least until he had no way out. Until he had to talk to the Pinkertons to save his own skin. They probably gave him the same deal they gave arthur. But the fucking rat took it.

Yeah, I think a problem for this video is that its premise is that the story is primarily about the gang and its break up, and so we should treat the gang as the protagonist of the game. The protagonist is Arthur. It’s about Arthur getting diagnosed with a terminal illness and waking up to the waste of a life he has led. There are obstacles both external and internal to the gang, but they aren’t nearly as important as Arthur trying to right what he wronged and ultimately being only able to get John and his family out, which we know is going to lead to John being killed eventually and Jack following him into the life. The epilogue is brilliant because it manages to leave us in a high note. John has his family, got revenge on Micah, and has built a life an honest life for himself, but we all know it won’t last. The agents are on their way. Arthur’s sacrifice is going to end in nothing. All these characters are still going to fail and die, which is real life. As Hemingway once said, any story told to its proper conclusion would end in death. The decision to end with a happy moment in the shadow of what’s to come, reinforces what Arthur actually learned: to live in the moment and love the people around you because life we don’t know what’s coming and life if very short

My idea is that the gang itself functioned as the antagonist, but not because they were viewed as villains by forces of the law, rather because their attempts to succeed eventually lead to the death of it's members and the destruction of their own lives and their legacy, which causes the events of RDR1.

Micah said something along the lines of "If I was in charge then I'd lose the gaggle of women. Real gang is 6 to 8 strong riders, so we could move fast and not be slowed down". In the end, who's to say Micah didn't get that. Everyone was leaving and only Dutch, John, Arthur, Bill, Charles, Javier, Micah, and 2 whom Micah introduced. Yes, there were Grimshaw, Tilly, Abigail, Jack, and Sadie, but as far as Micah was concerned they didn't matter. He even pleaded with Dutch to leave Abigail behind when she was captured after the train job.

The fact is they’re all outlaws and villains. That being said I still think Micah was the one to help escalate things to where they went. His only focus was getting the money and cutting as many people as he could so his share would be more. Micah was only ever looking out for himself. I don’t think he made Dutch do anything, but I definitely think he steered him in that direction preying on his more ruthless side.

I say it every time, but I wish R* would’ve made the story have variation. Avoid beating Thomas Downes, stay healthy, beat the sht out of Micah as a healthy Arthur, settle all loose ends and move away with Mary at the end of it. I so badly wanted a healthy Arthur’s reaction when Micah started rambling at the mouth in Chapter 5-6

In both games, the theme was the death of the Old West, so if there is an overarching villain, it is definitely time and the progress of civilization. RDR is a tale of bad people seeking redemption, not of a hero fighting a villain. There are multiple people who fit the label of villain or antagonist because it depends on whether you're focused on John or Arthur and where you are in their stories. So I feel that trying to approach the series with the goal of identifying a "real villain" misses the message that both games try to send.

The real villain of rdr2 is Micah Bell. He’s the one who convinced Dutch to do the ferry, to shoot Heidi McCourt, to try and rob both the families, to rob the train in chapter 6, all of it was Micah. All he had to do was appeal to Dutch’s ego and sit back and watch the fucking fireworks. All the bad guys in this game believe in something. Whether that’s societal justice, money, a code, it’s something to live and die for. Micah lives so that Micah can keep living. He’s the poster-child of pure fucking apathy, and apathy is what kills the soul. Arthur even says in the good man/bad ending knife fight that Micah’s “dead inside.” The game is showing us that not caring about anything is the worst fucking thing a person can do to themselves. Micah said “fuck it.” And then Dutch said “fuck it.”

Great video and yeah I can see how you'd view the dawning of "civilization" as the antagonist but I see that as more of Rockstar showing that while the Van Der Linde gang were not good people the "Law" were just outlaws in suits and morally there is little difference between Outlaws and the Law...ironically. Dutch is the true villain, he was the only one who had the ultimate power to get Micah out whether it was killing him himself or just excommunicating him from the gang it is very obvious...very early on that MIcah is leading the gang towards death

I don’t really agree with RDR2 not being Arthur’s story. Most literature or story telling can have multiple protagonists or have protagonists that switch/ change that’s nothing new. The main thing is Arthur is the one being forced to progress the story in the games. You can’t die as Arthur until the game allows you to. When you properly die as the game wants you die as Arthur the credits roll. Usually a tell tale sign that his story/ RDR2 has ended. Yes there is an epilogue for John where we follow John as our ‘new’ protagonist who pushes the story forward to explain the inbetween of RDR2 to RDR. But the Epilogue isn’t the main story it can literally be seen as a Supplement for the main Conclusion but the Epilogue should never be considered the ending of a story.

If rhere's a real villain, it's the concept of time and its effect on society and the inevitable, unstoppable march it presents. The evolution of civilisation is what brought the Pinkertons into the world, dissolving the "Wild" west away, that drives rats like Micah to desperation and to find ways to survive, by whatever means necessary. Civilisation, for all of Dutch's rambling about wanting to be free, is very attractive to him. It has a natural inclination towards a hierarchy of power and respect, something he needs from his gang and won't accept any challenges on in his gang. "He insists..." "FAITH"! He dresses in a fancy way, by far the most of the gang, he has a phonograph in his room, and embraces technology. His idol, Evelyn Miller, mirrors him in many ways, he's Dutch further down the line. Miller has a sense of freedom and justice, but he's a privileged fop as well, eager to delight in the pleasures of Saint Denis. By the time we see Dutch in RDR1, you can see that he's using a semi-automatic Pistol. To me, this symbolises that he now trusts civilisation and the tools it brings and has given up the hope of true freedom in the West. He's abandoned his principals and is using the arms of his enemy for himself. If there's a single human "villain" in the story, it's Dutch, and how he's been driven from ideals he might have truly held by ideals he finds truly appealing. All in all, I think it's a bit simplistic to think of this as having heroes and villains, the characters are largely well fleshed out and have understandable motivations that make them more nuanced. Even the rat Micah.

I think it’s good that Arthur isn’t mentioned in RDR1 or some savior of John at giving him a second chance, (odviously the idea for RDR2 wasn’t made) but in RDR2 Jack even mentions Arthur in the epilogue and Abigail mentions that John doesn’t like to talk about the past or Arthur because it’s more important to dwell on the present and future, so even if there is a remaster the only thing I would want to see is maybe Arthur’s hat on a stand or in John’s house, or maybe even his journal you can look through, I think bringing up Arthur more in a remaster would make Arthur feel like the main character of the series which he isn’t, because really It’s John and the Gang, Arthur as said while the perfect character development ever he’s just a vessel to witness these events

Circumstances doesn’t make the man. What you choose to do in those circumstances is what makes you. I would be a far worse person had it been the opposite, and you can see exactly this in the fact that Arthur was becoming a better man over the time of the game. It may have been accelerated due to his illness. Though that doesn’t change that it was his choices and his reflection of them that made him a better person. Society may be messed up, yet that doesn’t mean that is an excuse. I still believe that Dutch and Micah are the villains of the game.

from playing Red Dead Redemption 2 many times and from this perspectives I think Dutch, Micah, Agent Milton, Cornwall, and Colm Od'Driscoll are the main villains of RDR2. The reasons are Colm O'Driscoll killed Dutch's lover which drove Dutch to hate Colm O'Driscoll where it causes Dutch to go revenge mode including more obsession on competing the better gang leader than Colm O'Driscoll. Dutch couldn't control his addiction to the criminal life even though he advocate for some good ideas, easily manipulated by Micah along with Angelo Bronte about doing risky things, and leaving Arthur to die despite Arthur not betraying him. Also what I didn't like about Dutch was how he wouldn't even acknowledge that he made mistakes when members of the gang called him out of it. Also Micah would be consider as a villain because Micah likes to hurt including kill innocent people without cause or remorse, is an easily manipulator on Dutch to cause him being reckless without thinking of the consequences. Agent Milton is corrupt and another villain because he ruthlessly killed Hosea even though he promised Dutch's gang that he would let him go free, was about to kill Abigail until Arthur and Sadie rescue her, and doesn't even care if he hurts innocent people or women or children. Leviticus Cornwall was a greedy and ruthless man where he would bribe Agent Milton to do his work. Overall in my opinion there is no real right answer on who is the main villain, but all of these people are villains in their own way.

Dutch is the villain. He needs to be a leader but deep down he wants to be “free” like Micah. Micah is a survivalist. He wants the gang but also wants to do his own thing. He is the annoying brother. But the gang doesn’t really except him. He tries to be friendly sometimes but they sneer and laugh. Hosea is the Dutch’s conscience. When he is gone all that Dutch has is his dream of being free. Dutch loses it more and more, Micah does what he does to survive (the whole gang did the same thing but we like them) if Dutch were taken in I bet the gang would’ve survived a lot better then they did.

Arthur being wanted in 5 states 2 of which were dead or alive wrecked his relationship possibilities with Mary before he got sick and Hell we all know where it lead John. Micah likes to think of himself as some great Outlaw and survivor but he was just a criminal with only one skill, Killing. Dutch had blonder on to Micah because he saved Dutch's life but it was Dutch's choices in the end compounded by Laws & Order that blew apart his gang.

RDR2 tells the Story of both the Downfall of The Van Der Linde Gang and Arthur's change through it up to his death. Both ends are flesh out masterfully and through The same prospective, Arthur's. There is no clear antagonist, just people filling up these roles in the more typical ways. RDR2 is a story of change, so I think Catalysts is a better way to frame the Antagonists. The meat and potatoes of this story is how the Gang tears itself from within when faced with external pressure. So putting the emphasis on the external is clearly misguided in my mind!

Arthur had a mother he loved and respected, had he not met the gang ,his life might of taken a different path, he was 11 when she died, although Arthur was 15 when his father died and him and his dad didn't get along, he had family of his own, Johns mother died giving birth to him, his father died when he was 8, so John never had the stability of a loving family, thats why he was the way he was with his family, I have to say they were both villains but Arthur was the stronger smarter, more compassionate of the two, Arthur was always trying to be a better man, John didn't know how.Just my take on things I'm a mom and a grandmother and I love this game!❤micah was beyond redemption at birth!!!!!

It's funny to look back at the plot of RDR2 and realize that all main ingame antagonists are after the gang only because Dutch stirred the shit with them when he didn't have to. Dutch's poor leadership and slipping sense of what's right is the main antagonistic force for the game. Micah is a scumbag but he is consistent in just being himself. It's Dutch who changes, mostly for the worse.

In my opinion the real villain is money, faith, loyalty and tahiti. If none of these existed Dutch wouldn't go crazy

Honestly whether you fault Micah or Dutch or however the hell else, i think that the "villain" of this story is TB, or Arthur's own stupid choices comin' to bite him. That or time. your choice, but i feel those answers are more correct.

Swanson saved Dutch's life somehow and Dutch took him in. You can probably find the dialogue in some compilation.

@@theoutsiderjess4869 Dutch is not that utilitarian, but he does mention in chapter 5 that by themselves they are obviously outlaws, but the women make them look like pilgrims (or something like that). Swanson only helps them disguise themselves better

the real villains of the story are the entire van der linde gang. people forget that protagonist and hero are not always synonymous. just because we are made to care about the main characters, doesn’t mean they aren’t killers, theives, scammers, etc. its called red dead redemption, why do you guys think they need to be redeemed 😂

I feel like the spoiler warning is almost unnecessary at this point. Other than the act man, who doesn't know the story of the red dead's? The game is over 5-6 years old now for the second one. If you haven't played it and clicked on a video titled "who is the real villain of red dead?" You're not allowed to complain about spoilers
