The CZ 457 varmint is certainly capable of great accuracy with various match ammo. I had a fair bit of wind around yet it still managed to achieve 10-shots into 0.6" @ 50 yards!

Any CZ .22lr is a rifle for life. I had my 452 for 20 years. After bricks of ammo going through it, still shots like its new.

I recently bought the 457 Canadian in .22 WMR. It is like the American but with a 20" barrel. Straight out of the box it shot 10 shot groups under 1 MOA through 100 yards even with a 10-20kmh breeze. That was just my first outing with 30 Gr. Hornady V-Max. These rifles are fantastic shooters. Good video
@davidbrayshaw35293 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything said in this video. I have the Varmint, my wife has the American. Both are fantastic rifles but to be truthful, and it hurts me to do so, I prefer the ergonomics of the American. Shooting from a rest the Varmint has a slight advantage but it's only slight. Although it is heavier than the American model, it's a few inches shorter which would be advantageous for those that shoot from a vehicle but if I was walking around paddocks looking for bunnies, the American would be my pick. Both are equally as accurate (very) as the other. Another nice thing about our rifles is that they perform very well with CCI standards which suits our budget. It mightn't be the same for all barrels though. These rifles are a third of the price of an Anschutz yet they offer 90% of the build quality and accuracy and are well worth consideration IMHO.

My Marlin prefers CCI standard over Eley tenex, Lapua Centre x, or SK rifle match, strange things firearm barrels, good for me though cheaper ammo 🤣🤣

@@michaelbritain5546 We're lucky! It's nice when more cost effective ammo works well. The other one that I was surprised with was Winchester sub sonics. I can't remember exactly what they were called but they were cheap and they're sold in the local hardware which makes them even more attractive. For all of the ammo that I tried the el cheapos were the pick of the bunch. You've got to love that.

@@davidbrayshaw3529 I still have half a brick of Winchester subs, another which surprised me were Federal subsonics, copper washed also done in hollowpoints, very accurate from my BRNO, as I shoot .22 a lot 3/4 Times per week it has saved a fortune over the year's.👍

Good review Ozzie. Thanks. As one of the other guys commented, the 457 American shoots almost as well as my Varmint model. The one difference I have noted is the Varmint will group cheap, i.e. bulk ammo better than the slim barrel American. They both shoot very well and the build quality is impressive for the price point.

I finally got my hands on one of these. The American was my first choice but this is the one that became available. I paid $544 US. My first trip to the range was amazing. It's a 25 yard indoor facility and I shot off a front bag. After getting sighted in with a Vortex 2-7x32, it was dead on. The first five shots @ 25 yards were touching using CCI standard velocity. Seems to like standard velocity ammo rather than the faster stuff. I tried 6 different ammos. Worst group was .5". Can't wait to get the rifle really broken in. Thanks for your time in doing this video. Appreciate your efforts.

Couldn't agree more with everything you said about this rifle. For the price point this is an excellent purchase. As a UK shooter we don't often get the opportunity to stretch this out beyond a 25m indoor range but I have pushed this out to 100m (target) but the accuracy does fall off. Didn't get much shooting done in 2020 so hopefully it might open up mid 21. Enjoy your shooting :-)

I am delighted to confirm that I can achieve 0.45 MOA with my CZ 457 MTR .22lr (shooting indoors). I use Ballistic-X software to measure and analyse my 5 shot groups. Though the software is ridiculously cheap, I note that some of my preferred KZfaq gun channels use the same. When I measured some test results using the software with those using my digital calliper I discovered that there was a considerable discrepancy ….. but then again my 67 year old eyes may be the cause. However it is extremely satisfying to be able to email a digital copy of the Ballistic-X report to my much younger shooting colleagues, not that I’m competitive of course. I am convinced my MOA results are better when using a suppressor, what are your thoughts?

I'm a huge admirer of CZ. My stainless 455 is an absolute gem. I also have a Lithgow in 22 magnum. Excellent rifle but that semi match barrel adds a lot of weight for no meaningful accuracy advantage over the CZ. I use the Lithgow for fox and rabbit control and I love the hammered texture of the barrel. But the light weight of the CZ makes it my go to rifle. So match barrels, even on a CZ don't tempt me. I suspect the advantage is more psychological than real.

Doing DFO course this coming week and will apply for my AB immediately thereafter. Just want your opinion/advice on two things; guns to be precise. I want to get a bolt action rifle and a shotgun (I want a 12G mag fed straight pull shotty). Kinda have the shotty figured but want to know your thoughts on what rifle to get - whats the best caliber (223, 308 6.5 creedmoor) for different applications/game (hunting in Victoria so roos and deer) but also something that can take a beating and won't (hopefully) leave me eating tuna and rice for a few weeks to pay the rent. Just want something affordable (max 1500aud) that is robust and versatile. Also I am right handed but have a bad right eye compared to my left. Will obviously practice but a scope recommendation would be great as well. Thanks again for your fantastic content and hope the New Year has treated you well so far.

@davidbrayshaw35293 жыл бұрын
Yes, they had them in the 452 range of rifles. Not having a lefty is a pretty bad omission, if you ask me. Anschutz has a high end straight pull and Lithgow produces the 101 as a lefty but not many others do. I would have thought that CZ could have made a few bucks by targeting the left handed market. Targeting wasn't a pun, by the way.

I would like to know the testing process for each ammo. Do you use 10 of each only? Or do you shoot 15-20 rounds off camera to season the barrel? I like to do a box of 50 on each target like these hornady ones. 10x 5 shot groups. Usually the first 2-4 groups are crap and the last 6-8 give a more accurate "average" result.

So I put some small flip-up iron sights on the rail and look forward to warmer weather and a day at the range. It’s a small sight radius, but certainly longer and more stable than a hand gun. It's a gorgeous rifle but it's shooting 2+ MOA on average. Recently I retested my CZ 455 varmint with set trigger, I was considering to sell it and get 457 but I am not sure anymore. Although you're shooting 10 groups so it's not apples to apples comparison as I was shooting 5 shot groups but I got better results. With Eley Target I put 4 shots in to 0.3" and with firth shot it opened up to 0.63" With SK Standard plus I had 0.55" group. I also remember Wolf ammo shot good in the past. I should mention these were shot with suppressor. I normally get good results with CCI standard but this time group opened up. I used to think very highly of my CZ until I got Savage Mark II FV-SR and I was surprised it shot on par with CZ if not better, I had some really small groups with CCI standard velocity but I don't like the plastic stock and it has problem with extracting empty cases with wax lubed bullets like CCI standard velocity. I hope to test both rifles head to head when I get a chance. I plan to upgrade the stock on Savage to Boyd's and it's still going to be cheaper than CZ, also Savage is much lighter rifle as is. Another thing I threaded CZ455 myself and though that with 20" barrel I might run in to a problem where subsonic ammo is exceeding sound barrier but actually it's the Savage with 16" barrel that sometimes is extra loud, I wonder if it's because I leave it loaded and on safety and bullet binds somehow resulting in higher pressure?

I routinely shoot around .4" five shot groups with Browning BPR 40 grain bulk ammo in my CZ Varmint 455 22LR. Best groups are around .25" at 50 yards with cheap ammo. My CZ 457 Varmint WMR shoots at around 1" at 50 yards. Be good for a plinker but nowhere near the accuracy of the 455 22LR. I'll try some different ammo this year in the 22WMR; hopefully it will get closer the 455 in accuracy. Nice guns, but I expected better from the 457.

@@wateaman You got a keeper! I have yet to try Browning ammo. After I wrote the previous comment I took it out again and also got 1/2 MOA group with subsonic Fiocchi which was odd because the ES number was terrible. Also got amazing groups with Aguila standard and American Eagle!

@@DimaProk We have some off the grid property and I've been shooting at 50 yards. This year when the snow melts (in Montana) I'll try my luck at 100 yards. The CZ 455 trigger is good but not the best, but with good group sizes I'm reluctant to change anything. If the wind is blowing over about 3-5 mph I don't bother shooting- another variable that messes up accuracy. If the 457 doesn't perform with different ammo I'll probably sell it.

@@wateaman Mine 455 is varmint edition with the SET trigger. You push the trigger forward and it becomes very light, actually takes time to get used to it without setting off unexpectedly.

@@DimaProk Will try this. And may lighten up the trigger on the 457.
