Good, fair review. I shot NRA silhouette for years, and now shoot the occasional Rimfire Precision match. I never had a target 22lr that liked a clean barrel, they all did better with fouled barrel. I would shoot one ammo type, bore snake the barrel, then shoot at least 5 if not 10 rounds of the new ammo to foul the barrel again before firing test groups. I bought a CZ 455, which came with the boyds stock, and I had to sand out the barrel channel for a true free float. That may have been an issue with yours. I finally changed the 455 over to a MDT chassis and it tightened the groups up a bit more. With SK rifle match ammo I can now count on groups about 3/4 MOA (+/- 1/4") pretty consistently. BUT, I do see guys doing well at matches with the RPR Rimfire. My favorite is a guy I've shot with whom uses a Savage model 94, and the dang thing LOVES Blaser ammo...... Truly, he shoots one hole groups with Cheap ammo. Lucky SOB....

Great video & comparison. Thanks for doing it. I've seen folks weigh their .22 cartridges and then shoot the ones closest in weight (surprising the variances), for more consistency. I'd love to see this comparison done again, but with the cartridges selected and used, being the ones that were all the exact - or closest to exact - weight.

Just tested my AR22 I built with a CMMG 16 inch barrel tonight at 100 yards, cci standard velocity at 100 yards was a 1 inch group! Eley target was also very accurate. My Ruger RPR 17 HMR is a tack driver also, sold my Savage A17 because it would not group. Love your videos!!

My first rifle was the CZ 452. At 50 yards with Wolf Match Target I shot a fly that was annoying me while target shooting. I have an inexpensive bushnell scope on it and have found SK or Wolf to be the best ammo for it. I do agree with your points favoring the RPR over the CZ though. Thanks for the comparison .

Back between 2005 and 2010 I shot thousands of rounds of .22 LR. I noticed that when changing from one ammo to another it would take between 10 and 20 rounds before the new ammo would settle in and shoot to its potential. I believe that was due to differences in bullet lubes and "seasoning" the bore. My favorite and best shooting rifle is my CZ 452FS. Awesome shooting rifle.

My RPR has a Vortex diamondback tactical scope 6 x 24 50 scope and I tested it at an indoor 100 yard range. The best ammo that I found for 100 yards was RWS R100, $16 per box. With the scope at x24 I shot 140 shots in 28 five shot groups. Including all flyers the average for the 28 five shot groups was 0.961and the average for the last target with 5 five shots was 0.708, practice did help. I like using an indoor range for initial testing because it gives you a better idea what the real accuracy is for the gun

I have both rifles, and the CZ455 love the CCI standard. In the Ruger Precision I use Lapua centre x, and I have it out too 300 yards on a 2 inch steel target. The Ruger is designed for that type of shooting. Lapua long range match are over €20 a box and I haven't used them yet. I am using SK long range match this weekend and I will see if the out shoot the Lapua centre x, but I don't think so. They are all very good at 100 yards

Plus I've already bought a 10 / 22 Takedown in 18.5". Bolt action for precision might be my next rifle. Its a tough decision but I'm leaning on the RPR.

I was in between these two yesterday and I ended up going with the CZ 455. The CZ455 at my store was a varmit model with the threaded heavy barrel and it has the wooden thumbhole stock. The action is tremendously smoother on the CZ than the Ruger. I didn't test the trigger on the Ruger, but I also love the trigger on the CZ. I liked it how it came out of the box and then found that the trigger is able to be adjusted. I adjusted it down a little and I am very pleased. I zeroed my CZ at a 30 yard indoor range since it was snowing. It did very well, but it was tough to get very good groups since I didn't have a full table to rest the butt of the rifle on. I still keyholed usually 2-3 of 5 shots. After I got home, I looked in the box of the CZ and they included the paper where they tested it in factory at 50 meters. All shots were easily within a .4 ish or less group. I am excited to see what it will do whenever I get it to our outdoor range and can properly stabilize the rear

I own a 455 as well as an american target, couldn't choose only one :) both good rimfire options. The cz is happy with fed target and some norma stuff I found here locally for cheap. The ruger eats up almost anything. I often think about the difference in the inside diameter of the barrels, I have heard cz makes them tighter than the competitors and also diameter on the rounds will vary slightly between manufacturers. Loved you're video

Taking a break from large calibers until ammo is readily avail and my justification to get the RPR, CZ with a 24” barrel in a chassis and build a Bergara in a Masterpiece Arms chassis. Which ever one shoots CCI standard or bulk ammo best will be my go to. I’m really enjoying and appreciate your site. If ever in Hawaii look me up. We don’t have 1000 yard ranges here but putting 5 in one hole at 100 is the goal and using the know your limits target at 50 yards is the training.

Usually, when changing ammo, you run a couple shots down the tube to "acclimate" the barrel. With the high end ammo, it grouped the last 3 on top of each other. I don't know for sure, just what I've heard about 22lr.

The RPR in 17 shoots amazing at 100 yards with regular ammo, but gun just felt cheap and the action was sloppy. I'm done with Rugers and I'm sticking with CZ's for rimfire. They just seem to feed ammo better than Rugers and I'm happy with the accuracy.

My current preferred 22lr at 50 and 100 yards is SK Long Range AFTER I have used a Neal Waltz resizing die on the ammo. The die does two things that I identify as improving the precision (no, I have no targets to demonstrate). One, resizing ensures that for 360 degrees the 22lr driving rings are a consistent 0,225 in., and two, that the rings are 0.225 in. to ensure positive contact with the rifling grooves. Someone noted in the comments "remove the wax" from the SK 22lr ammo. SK does not use a wax lube; a light oil is used as with all German manufactured 22lr's that I have experience with. CCI and Eley 22lr use a wax

good stuff, thanks for the info. Got rid of my tacsol x-ring(the rifle that started me on your channel, and my only .22lr) not long ago, as the accuracy just wasnt what i was hoping for. Now looking to replace it and have been trying to decide between the 457 and the T1x. You have any hands on with the Tikka yet? Cant find a whooole lot of reports on it, but i have had nothing but extremely good experiences with my .308 Tikkas. I hadnt really been considering the Ruger, as i was planning on eventually putting the Tikka or CZ into a mpa / mdt / krg at some point, and there dont appear to be many options out there for the Ruger. Seems like it is the best choice if you plan to leave as-is however, so basically what you already said... Think the 457 MTR is worth a premium for the "match" chamber? Really not familiar with the rimfire world. Is it realistic to expect a .5-.75moa rifle south of a Vudoo? Was planning on around the $1500 mark, minus optics.

Funny i came across your comment when I just traded my tacsol x ring in for a RPR and couldn't be happier. My x ring wouldn't reliably feed anything below 1200fps even suppressed but shot 1.1 moa with cci standard velocity. The RPR after a few hundred rounds shot the same if not better as I never measured the groups. Both used the same vortex crossfire 2 4x12x50.

@@scottymoh4489 exact same experience. Seemed to like mini mags for reliability, but was getting like 1.5moa with them. Standards were definitely closer to 1 but was just way too unreliable I decided that a .22 was only going to be interesting to me if it was an absolute laser. Luckily lots of good options now

One other benefit of the RPR is that it shares the mag pattern with the 10/22. Cheap mags to get and almost every has or knows someone that has a 10/22. I've actually found my RPR like Aguilia Standard Velocity about as much as any other ammo which saves quite a bit of cash. I never bother with 100 yards with my 22’s here in Phoenix due to the constant wind at the range. My RPR, at 50 yards, on the rare calm days, will consistently shoot all holes touching with Federal Ultra Match. I have tried 20 different types of ammo with the RPR, and by far the worst is anything made by Tennex. Go figure. Unfortunately, UM is no longer being made. When switching ammo, however, I run 5 rounds of the new load before shooting for groups. My RPR is my choice. Better than my Anschutz.

@gamelord1000

Missing the point. He wasn't doing a comparison to see which ammo was most accurate, he was comparing the rifles to see how they shoot against each other. Both rifles had the same criteria when tested and both came out pretty equal. I think his review was spot on for what he was going for. Now, if he was testing to see which rifle was more accurate than the other, he obviously would need to properly clean the rifle between ammo changes and run a mag or two of the new ammo through to really get the rifle properly coated and such, then shoot groups. Problem here is now you are just testing which ammo works best for what barrel/rifle, not really testing if the RPR is better than the CZ. Reason is (hypothetically) that the CZ may end up shooting ultra tight groups with the Federal while the RPR may shoot ultra tight groups with the Tenex. Having a certain ammo match up perfectly with a certain rifle/barrel/twist rate will always shoot tighter groups than another brand ammo/rifle that doesn't match up very well. You are not going to be able to watch a KZfaq video and find that one holy grail of ammo that out shoots all others because it really depends on what your particular rifle likes. Obviously, shooting high quality ammo will almost always out group cheap garbage and high quality rifles will /usually/ out perform bargain basement rifles but when you get to the quality of both the RPR and the CZ or Voodoo or any of the other high end rifles, it will usually come down to the shooter and lots of testing to see what ammo just so happens to be right for that particular setup. Some things I would like to know that were missed is how the ergonomics were between each one, how the grip felt, how comfortable were they to shoot and how were the triggers, pull weight, break etc. How were the mags, ease of use etc. You can always mod-upgrade but am I going to have to buy another $400+ trigger pack to get it to shoot right? If so then it really isn't a $450.00 rifle, now it is a $900.00 rifle (to compare it fairly against the other). If I am going to end up spending $900.00, would I be better off going with another brand that is in the $900.00 range? Still, great review. The RPR looks very promising.

The Season limit is 40 squirrels, and I limit myself to one box of 22 HP to take my 40, my personal best was 40 squirrels with 44 shots. With a Browning/Winchester M-52 that they made in the 1990s fixed 4x Leupold! Might use the highest power on the scope if the burris goes to 25 power use that in both scopes. Groups will tighten up with a closer look. I find that my barrel takes 7 shots to season to the different ammo so I burn 8 rounds with a clean bore. My accuracy drops off right at 150 rounds and she wants a cleaning. Wonder what the trigger weights are between the two rifles. I find that any trigger over a LB. Will require your thumb to be centered on the back strap of grip witch is a good habit anyhow. Great videos. Way to enjoy this weather! HAPPY PLINKING!

Question (not trying to be another internet expert); I have read - allegedly - that the ‘optimal’ barrel length for .22 lr is 16”. Maximum velocity is attained at 16” and any barrel longer than 16 is then slowing and destabilizing the bullet. (according to I can’t remember who, but someone who propounds to know more than me). Is it possible the RPR performs better than the CZ because it has a shorter barrel? It would be interesting to see the RPR competing against itself with three barrels of 16 “, 18” and 20”, just for giggles...
@XRING
@XRING 4 жыл бұрын
That would be a good but pricey experiment. I have heard that as well but I have an old savage with a 22” bbl that will outshoot both the CZ and the RPR regularly. Great comment
@gamelord1000
@gamelord1000 4 жыл бұрын
I think it has to do more with how hot the ammo is than the barrel length. Hotter ammo and magnum rounds may have higher velocity with a 20" barrel than a 16". With most off-the-shelf ammo, a 16" barrel is optimal.

Eley ammunition is expensive because it’s imported from the U.K. conversely American ammo can be pricey this side of the pond due to import costs too. Hopefully if we agree to a trade deal before long that may make it far cheaper to buy each other’s products if the import taxes and duty are removed from the cost... P.S. when firing different types of .22lr ammo through the same rifle it’s advisable to put at least 10 rounds through the rifle first to allow it to adjust to the different coating on the ammo otherwise you tend to get a few flyers..

I will have to try that out tomorrow. So far, I have tried almost ALL CCI ammunition, Eley Tenex, Club, Match, and Standard. Wolf 22, Gemtech and a lot of German Match ammo. So far, the Tenex is the one to beat. I just refuse to pay that much for .22 ammo. Thanks again for the recommendation.

The flyers in Blazer open the group up about 1 MOA larger than my groups with Std. Velocity. That is out of a 10/22 with the SS cold hammer forged barrel and the compact Ruger American Rimfire. If there is a way to post a picture I have them on the same target.

Really good video and im guessing that loading from mags are better now then when i was shooting .22 alot. More then 20 years ago when the mags started to come to competing rifles it was kinda bad when loading cuse its loaded bad sometimes ans scraped of some of the lead from the bullet so it could be real crap and i always lodaed one shot at the time to be safe... watched alot of your vids now cuse im going to start targetshooting again and getting a Tikka 3 and maby a .22 from my rifleclub.

I own a CZ 452 American and shoot it at 100 meters here in U.K. ( no longer shooting due to corona virus ) and use Eley action with 2 inch target and have pretty good shooting , better then both these rifles , surprises me how different ammo can do to groupings , also Hornady do well

Thanks for commenting Joseph. It’s always kind of hit or miss with rimfire. Before the actual “test” video the CZ shot a 3/4 moa group with the Eley Tenex. My Anschutz will shoot extremely tight groups but only with a few types of ammunition. It is still a lot of fun playing around with what works and what doesn’t. I haven’t ever used or even remember seeing the Hornandy rimfire ammo. I will have to look for some to try. Thank you please stay safe and healthy.

I would pick the Ruger myself since the groups are about the same but the Ruger's adjustability is far superior to the CZ. What I can't understand with Ruger is why a 18" barrel on this rifle and a 24" on the 6.5 Creedmoor, is 2 more inches gonna bust their profit margin? I would like to see the velocity gains and weight on the rifle.
@gamelord1000
@gamelord1000 2 жыл бұрын
You actually lose velocity with a barrel longer than 16-18" with the 22lr cartridge. The RPR is geared towards competition shooters and longer barrels make it harder to move in and out of props. Most will prefer a barrel shorter than 20" for rimfire.

I tried to take an RPR hunting - no thanks. For me the CZ is the better "all around" gun as I can use it on the bench or in the field (and it seemed like the 2nd CZ group was the best of everything you shot). Would be nice to see RPR vs new Savage B22 Precision for a bench 22.

I have a CZ457 Provarmint SR. I ditched the boyd stock for a KRG Bravo, running an Area 419 30 MOA rail, and yodave trigger spring. It's been surprisingly accurate and I normally get 1/4-1/2" at 50 yards depending on ammunition and how much it likes a certain lot. I had a lot of Wolf Match Extra that would print 1/4" consistently @ 50yds and had a SD of 7fps. It was the most consistent lot I've ever had. I've had really good luck with SK Standard Plus and SK rifle match (red box) and they have gotten close to that lot of Wolf but not quite as consistent. I mainly run this gun in the local precision rimfire matches and quite honestly a half minute 22lr is a bit overkill but it does feel good when you bunghole a paper stage. But I have thought about throwing a lilja barrel on my 457 to take it to the next level, but considering I'm buying a ZCO ZC527 and getting my rifle built this month it'll probably get put back for a little while longer. Great shooting and stay safe!

Me and my shooting partner have these rifles, me the ruger and him the cz. They are very close in accuracy, he’s probably a little better of a shot than me. The cz is much lighter but I find the ruger is a little more fun and comfortable when shooting as you can really dial in the cheek weld and eye relief.
