The Czech/Czechoslovakian Vz.58 was a legendary rifle, serving Czechoslovakia, (later the Czech Rep., Slovakia) for more than 60 years. Known for it's accuracy, reliability and how it differers in every way from the Kalashnikov, outside of the appearance; the Vz. 58 has been a loyal friend to the Czech soldier.
Many Czech service members were hesitant on turning their Vz.58 in for a good reason.The rifle is light-weight, accurate and one of the most dependable systems available.
We shoot a beautiful example on loan from Small Arms Solutions, which was made by Czech Small Arms and sold by Czechpoint USA. Henry liked it so much that he ended up procuring one for his personal collection after testing it!

They're good guns for what they are, but because they're fully proprietary and there's no good way to mount optics on them, they're impractical when compared to a modern AK. As a standalone, they're great. But the complete lack of an ecosystem is what kills it. The VZ58 was definitely better than the AK's of its era, but the AK has evolved dramatically and if you take full advantage of its quick-change optics you can get a much more attractive package overall.
@jeramyw
@jeramyw 4 жыл бұрын
@@WardenWolf Pretty much every gun is proprietary. You can mount optics just like the AK. Side rail, handguard, and top mounted rail. The problem is there isn't as much after market support for it.

I know. I have a CSA in 5.56X45, and a D-Technik (CSA's original business name) in 7.62X39 with the beaver barf furniture. Nice accuracy, but definitely need to wear gloves when manipulating the controls, tons of 90 degree edges that nick you constantly when reloading or manipulating the safety under stress.

Im an AK guy myself but even I would admit a true Czech made VZ58 is a more refined/smoother firing weapon. I would imagine less felt recoil than an AK which should translate better accuracy. I feel like these would make for a better hog slaying rifle than a cheap AK.

From our testing the Vz58 rifles are inherently more accurate than Russian, Yugo and Chinese AKs in the same caliber. I don't know for sure but i suspect that it might be the difference of short and long stroke piston design. Also the czech block bolt locking seems to be more consistent and may provide longer dwell time

The CZ factory puts out fantastic firearms. The Vz-58 is no exception to that rule. When people first look at the Vz-58 they think, ah another AK. @@lrlapua8035 From most of the methodology of the previous PA Long Range (and also the name of the channel of 9 Hole being a good hint too), they most likely function test and usually check zero. That's all I can hypothesize. Exact round count before filming is sort of irrelevant since it's most like just them grabbing the rifles and going from there seeing what the rifles can do then and there in ever changing environments (some days are clear and sunny and some days are just windy as hell and sort of cloudy), which seems to be the goal from what I can tell from past PA courses... Yeah... My Vz.2008 WAS SUCH A RIP OFF! I got mine when they came out at the low, low introductory price of $399.00. It came with a Made in USA milled receiver, USA made chrome lined barrel, 16.25" w/ 1:9.5 twist, the rest of the parts are a mix of USA and Czech made parts. I mean, what was I thinking? I could have shelled out four times for what I paid for my Vz.2008 and got an authentic Czech Vz.58 instead! By now you should get a sense of my sarcasm, and get a feel that paying more for an overpriced import is just fucking stupid. Find me another AK/Vz Variant that can match the specs of a Vz. 2008 for $399.00 and I'll kiss your ass! The moral kids, is that if your going to pay over a thousand dollars in cold hard cash for an AK or Vz variant it better do more than just semi-automatic fire, or you just fucked yourself. I am not impressed with Czech Vz.58 owners anymore than I am with AK owners who payed over a thousand dollars for a semi-automatic sporter. Bitches, please. Don't buy into the hype, there is nothing wrong with the Vz.2008, the only people I hear who have a problem or 'hear rumors' about it being a POS, are fucking salesmen trying to get one over on you.

The AKM (including its AK-103 variant) and the vz.58 are my two favorite assault rifles. One thing I like about the vz.58 is the ability to keep the magazine in place, and replenish it from the top of the receiver with SKS 10-round stripper clips, since there are stripper clip guides built into the front of the bolt face.

I had one and I liked it a lot. I changed the buttstock, grip, put a compensator on it and a top front rail with a dot sight. Only reason I soled it is because my shooting club went bust and I had to move to another one that did'n support this kind of rifle/ammo. Good trigger, light, easy to handle, lots of aftermarket parts, good accuracy.

No miracle, let me tell you. Not for that amount of money. It kicks more than 58 (in 7,62) and well, because most people here in Slovakia and Czech rep. shoots surplus corrosive ammo anyway, it's not good idea to shoot it from Bren as it doesn't have chromed barrel. I couldn't like it. AR-15 all the way.

My Century gun has been great, and the price was $399 with 5 mags, mag pouch, and cleaning kit. A great deal at the time. I also bought a kit and built it myself and it turned out pretty good. I've held one of the Czech guns and they were quite a bit nicer than my two rifles.

Had to smile at Henry's first pronunciation when he described the mag as "aluminium", he first used the "Queen's English". In South Africa we will use Henry's first "aluminium". English is not my first language and it is always interesting to hear how firearm terms may differ between the Americans and Brits. By the way, a few years ago some of these Czech rifles were imported into South Africa, they sold out very fast. Interestingly the Chinese Norinco AK 47 copy sells here for half the price of a South African assembled AR 15 clone. From time to time Norinco copies of the AR 15 also come into our country, these seem to last very well.

There were a times, when you can buy it for $65 (1500CZK), but only theoretically, because it was fully-automatic version and you needed special permision to own full-auto, which obviously had not been granted. Most people has semi-automatic, which is for standard permision, which is granted always. Price was about $165 (4000CZK). I't was 15 years ago. Now the prices are 2 - 2,5 higher.

@Flivver What he is saying is there is no more surplus parts coming in. There were less than a million military VZ-58 rifles made during it's service life. CSA makes a Civilian single stack sporter model that is 922(r)ed and milled out to accept the military magazines. This is the main reason of the small lots that are imported into the United States.

Got this gun myself (1969 made, rebranded by Kolarms, Slovakia). First time I dismantled the gun I was like "where are the parts?" Then I realised this gun is so simple! Years after I just love it. My front sight is a bit different, it is more like U shaped, not full ring over the front sight. Thank you so much for the review. Oh and btw, I use stripper clips sometimes too, but it requires a little practice to make it quick.
