Originally flag of Czech Republic was flag of Czechoslovakia. After velvet divorce there was a pact that says both countries must have new flag. But as it is, Czech people do not always cares about law so much. So we "broke" or "work around" the pact and keep original Czechoslovakia flag. It is one of the "double-edged" talents witch every Czech man is born with. We always find the way, no matter costs. And as long Czechs will live there be someone who want "work around" some rules just for knowing he can do it.

Ona totiž vypadala nachlup stejně jako polská. Takže nakonec o necelé tři roky později čeští i slovenští politici v československém parlamentu společně odhlasovali, že československou vlajku si nesmí žádný z nástupnických států přivlastnit, načež politici těch samých stran v České národní radě na ten československý ústavní zákon naplivali, zahodili ho do koše a tu vlajku si stejně ukradli. Perfektně připravené a zahrané.

As a Czech living abroad I feel your pain when talking about T H E C Z E C H R E P U B L I C, how awkward and clumsy it sounds, especially during a longer chat about the country :D But at the same time, I never felt confident enough to just use "Czechia" as I thought people will be confused by that and it'll be too weird if I suddenly change the name of the country I often talk about. I don't like word "czechia" (even how it sounds). But it has one great andvantage - you can use it as a name for czech state cross a history. I'm czech guy who living in Ireland and sometimes it's hard to have a conversation about czech history. To use "the Czech republic" in conversation about middle ages is not just correct. And irish people have (of course) no idea what/when/where the Bohemian kingdom was. So you have to explain what was Bohemian kingdom, Czech kingdom, Austria-Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Czechoslovak socialistic republic, Czech and Slovak federative republic etc. You can use just (fuc*ing) "Czechia in 17th century" and everybody know what you're talking about.

You can very well use "the Czech kingdom" or "the lands of the Czech crown" instead of Czechia as this state form had been existing continuously for about 700 years until WW1, even within the Austrian Empire. (Emperors were crowned with the czech crown except the last one who refused it). The term Bohemia (or Moravia) is also historicaly more familiar to the western audience than the scarcely occuring "Czechia".

@@michaldevetsedm1882 However, the crown was Bohemian, not Czech. Many of Bohemian kings even didn't speak Czech. We can speak about the Czech National Revival, but not about the Czech Kingdom. When we speak about Czech lands, we mean just the two core ones of all Bohemian lands. Lusatias were not Czech lands, even though they were Bohemian lands. Most of Silesia(s) as well. However, Czechia can be used as a timeless and retrospective name of the country itself, while "Czech Republic" cannot be used retrospectively.

Story time: I am Slovak. As a uni IT student I was invited by Huawei to come to their headquarters in Shenzhen, China to take a look at some of their cellphone tower tech and to learn about China. It was a 2 week course, for them it was publicity. I came along with other Slovak uni students as well as Czechs and other nationalities. At the opening presentation the speaker said something like "So we have people from 3 countries, Brunei, Malaysia and Czechoslovakia" :D all of us were like bruhh. We corrected her, it's fine. But it seems like all of the people who took care of us got the same memo - that Czechoslovaks are coming - because everybody who we interacted with from Huawei we had to correct. Pretty sad when a multi-billion dollar company is 2 decades behind with it's geography homework.

Dude that is kind of sad. I want to say where I am in the states most people would say Czech Republic at a minimum, even if they eschew the short name of Czechia-and Slovakia is a no brainer. Only time I’ve used Czechoslovakia outside of talking about the historical state and Prague Spring was when my friends mom told me her family was from Czechoslovakia when it actually existed.

Btw. in other languages they use short names. I have learned the German language and Russian language. In German the short version is Tschechien (pronounced as "čechien" ; long version is Tschechische republik, the long name is used only in official occasions, in maps etc. Germans use the short name. And there is also other short name "Tschechei", but it is little bit pejorative) and in Russian it is Чехия (Čechija) and i have never encountered the long name which is Чешская Республика...

Although Germans had used “Tschechei” before the Nazi period, Czechia had been used many years before Germans first used “Tschechei”. Today, “Tschechei” is rarely used in Germany because most Germans use „Tschechien“. If “Tschechei” is used it does not need to be necessarily viewed as a pejorative term since it was created in a similar way as names for other countries in German, such as Slowakei and Türkei.

Greetings. This is because after 1989 we had the desire to make it clear to the world that we proudly are no longer a "soviet protectorate". That we are an independent state. Our own republic. And it was wild! 29. března 1990 - Československá, federativní republika. 23. dubna 1990 Česká a Slovenská Federativní Republika. (March 29, 1990 - Czechoslovak Federal Republic. April 23, 1990 Czech and Slovak Federal Republic.) We had a chance to decide for ourselves, so we enjoyed it! The name "Czechia" is used mainly by the younger generation. Of course. But the younger generation is also more active on the Internet (in general) and this ensures dissemination. In my opinion, it's really "just" a question of habit. "Just." is in quotes, because Czechs literally love customs and traditions... Or at least they loved. I am one of those people who was very upset by the name "Czechia". It really pissed me off. Always! But the more this name is used, the more I get used to it. It definitely doesn't bother me anymore, and after watching your video, I'm aware of the "outside" opinion too. So... if it has to be "Czechia" be it Czechia... ;)

"The name "Czechia" is used mainly by the younger generation?" I don't think so. "Czechia" is used also by older and acquainted people who know that the history of the Czech Republic is very short, younger than history of Czechia itself. Only young uneducated people are able to say thoughtlessly that Masaryk was a president of the Czech Republic. Older people remember the times when Czechia existed (within various political forms and unions), but the Czech Republic has not yet. How could they call the Czech part of Czechoslovakia before its federalization? Of course, I mean those who were able to distinguish Bohemia from the whole Czechia.

Thank you, Dream Prague (also for citation), a very beneficial summary for both English speakers and Czechs with their traditional myths and fallacies about the name Czechia. Simply: the Czech Republic is nothing else than the current state formation in Czechia. This is the point. Czechia is a geographic, timeless, universally applicable name, the Czech Republic is a political, naturally transient name. While the political name is only applicable in official documents, such as international treaties, the geographical name has its clearly defined natural function in all other cases. In the said "all other cases", the political name can never replace the geographical name because, unlike the latter, it has a temporary character ignoring the historical continuity of the state, and so its function is limited to the current state subject.

Some names for Germans, Russians etc. can be felt also "derisive". However, Václav Hájek z Libočan was not a nazi when did use the word in 1541 in his Kronyka Czeska, as well as Daniel Adam z Veleslavína in his 1598 vocabulary. At least since 1841, the name was used also in English texts (Peter Heylyn used the form "Czechian" even in 1625). Josef Ruda titles his 1837 work "Phytotoxicologiae čechicae tentamen, exhibens plantas venenatas Čechiae indigenas." Also the Moravian bohemist František Trávníček can be accused of sympathy for communism, but certainly not for nazism. Etc. And it was the Nazis who paradoxically called their protectorate "Böhmen und Mähren", not "Tschechei". Austrian absolutism was also interested in weakening the historical unity of the Czech lands and their common identity.

Great video! I'm sure even many Czechs couldn't do it better ;) I think this problem is very much connected with the new Czech name of our country, "Česko" (Czech equivalent of Czechia). I know a lot of people hate it and don't want to use it (even among journalists) for many different reasons, most of which you have covered in this video. Actually, I am a linguist and in my opinion the use of this short name is not only very practical in many non-official situations but also logical (as it surely includes all Czech lands as opposed to Čechy). As it seems all this hassle is really just a matter of habits. It's a new word and people are simply not used to it. That's all. But they like to discuss it a lot like many other things. It's such a Czech folklore - endless discussions, preferably having a beer in a pub :))

You are absolutely right: old habits die hard. What is striking is how many stupid reasons the Czechs come up with to justify their inability and unwillingness to learn and use something new despite Czechia being much more practical than the Czech Republic in everyday speech or writing and the fact that we use short names for the vast majority of countries, including all European countries (perhaps with the exception of Britain).

Neřekl bych, že Česko je "new Czech name of our country". The strange thing is that the generation of those expats left Czechoslovakia at a time when no Czech Republic yet existed, and Czechia was a part of the Czechoslovak republic. This video is just awesome! I really like how you decided to approach this problem as an "outsider" to this quite internal issue, I would say. Honestly, I have no problem with using the short name in English (actually it's the default version I use, and use the longer version only when someone's visibly confused as to what country it is). I'm pretty sure it's going to get used more and more as time goes on (its use with English-speakers is already growing, I feel like). Czechs just don't like change and sometimes don't even understand why just "Czech" is wrong and clunky (because most Czechs don't have very good English). But I feel like in the ened, eventually, they'll get kind of used to it as well. Or at least I hope they will. And honestly, using either one or both interchangeably is fine too. As both the Czech Republic and Czechia are valid names for our country, I'm fine with people using either name.

Great, thanks! I'm representing this country in some international organizations and yes (being 40+) I have some problems myself to accomodate the one-word name. I'm not used to it much, must take control over what I'm saying but I'm trying my best in non-official discussions to refer to "Czechia". It's sometimes hard for the foreigners, too, but they're getting more acquainted with it and not much troubled by using it. So yes, Czechia is fine and no need to refer to the "republic" everytime you mention your homecountry :-)

One good thing about the name Czechia is that Americans no longer call it "Czechoslavia". I heard them refer to it in this manner a few times when I lived in California in the eighties.

The best argument in favour of Czechia is that in other languages the short name is absolutely normal. Tchéquie, Tschechien, Chequía, Cechia, Tsjechië, Tjekkiet etc.pp. This is as much a problem of English linguistics as it is a Czech problem. It's just because English is so important that also Czech people care, if there was the same issue in a small language nearly nobody would.

Honestly never understood the people who dislike Czechia. For me whenever talking about Czech Republic in an informal setting I would use Česko, but for the longest time I didn't know what to do when speaking English. For me Czechia is just a direct translation and so I use it. Because lets be real saying Czech Republic every time is cumbersome.

As a non-Czech, I have to agree with some of my native Czech friends' opinions (and also mentioned in the video), no-one who hasn't a knowledge of geography should be taken so seriously and Czechs must have confidence in their decadent history and national identity. From a Jewish-language perspective: In Yiddish we say Čechej (טשעכיי) and in Israeli Hebrew we say Czechia (צ'כיה). Since Ashkenazim have been in Prague alone at least since the 10th century, pure Yiddish (not New Yorker Yiddish) took many loan words from the Czech language such as matka (מאַטקע), smetana (סמעטענע - smetene), že (זשע), aby (אַבי), and many more. My point is simply, Czechia has had an impact on us just as we have on Czechia throughout the years and it's simple, sweet, to the point, and as a language of maličkostí, I'm surprised this is such a debate. D: Alas, it's a magical place and clearly has a bewitching name that's still up for passionate telenovela-style arguments. Ale už víme, že Česko je Czechia v angličtině, že jo? ;)

You should know, that we had the same fight about "Česko" too. Very fierce at the time. But after a while some big media just started to use it almost exclusively and that was that. People got used to it and nowadays only few remain to oppose it. But they oppose it still and never cease. No arguments no grammar no logic can convince them. I think they are just too old for all the changes of the world around them. And that has nothing to do with their age, just mindset, if you know what i mean. Czechia is absolutely ok, even nice name for our country. :) And so is Česko. Czech republic good only for official or semi official purposes.

Czech Republic (Formal political full-name) Czechia (Informal day-to-day short-name) Easy to remember. I find this weird because in my country Poland we call this country "Czechy" and we do have a full-name "Republika Czecka" but nobody uses it but there are some data maps & some charts that use the full-name even though the other countries have only their short-names labelled. Still an every day use "Czechy" is used and nobody but politicians or big country nerds use "Republika Czeska". As a Polish kid growing up in the UK I thought the "Czech Republic" was a weird name because it didn't line up with the Polish name "Czechy". When "Czechia" became official in 2016-ish I began to use it because it's just better but when talking to English-speakers they get surprised at the name "Czechia" because somehow the news never hit them. Weird?

"King of Czechia" is also a bit anachronistic, especially considering that the Luxembourger may not have spoken much Czech. His crown was Bohemian, not Czech. However, the country can be called Czechia retrospectively, while Czech Republic is absolutely inappropriate for it.

I didn’t like it because the rest of the world finally slowly started to realize that there is a country somewhere out there called the Czech Republic. And at that moment of enlightenment we decided to change the name again. I was really surprised wherever I was travelling, people know and use the name Czechia without problem. Only people that are strongly against it are Czechs themselves (mostly without rational reason). It's just a short name (same as Slovakia, Germany, Poland, Austria, etc.) so use it informally and use the official name Czech republic only in official manners (documents, bureaus forms, etc.) 😉 By the way, great video, Jen.
