My wolfdog logan passed away in my arms on 14/04/2020 at 5pm. He battled illness for a few years so i had given up my job to care for him. He was my best friend and i miss him immensely. These are beautiful sentient beings. Rest in peace logan. I will see you again.

Only seven weeks ago we adopted a Czech Wolfsdog. The previous owner - who we did not know - passed away and her sister could only temporarily take care of the dog (eight years old). It took the dog two days to make a beginning with accepting us two as her new pack. Two days in which she just layed on her cushion, staring into space, not eating or drinking and going through the motions when we took her out for a walk. After two days we saw she started opening up and we started this very interesting period of daily discoveries with eachother. What she liked or not, what we would allow or not, etcetera. Now, seven weeks in (not "months and months and months"), there is complete trust and she really knows we're now the pack. We trust her to walk without a leash in designated areas and it's clear she has full focus on us wherever we go. She's a real sweetheart: very easy going at the vet for a checkup and introducing her with our parents and best friends went ridiculously well. She's already a golden addition to our lives and I tend to think she feels the same way. :-)

I own a Czeckoslovakian Wolfdog. Anneka is right on the money describing these dogs. They are stuborn and curious. You need allot of experience handling this type of dog. This breed is not for someone that has no experience with this breed. To own a dog like this, you need to understand wolf behavior. The Czekoslovakian Vlcak or wolfdog is a primative breed and will love members of the pack. You and other family members will become their pack. If raised from a pup they do get along with small dogs. These dogs have a very strong bond with their owners.

I was supposed to get a Malamute-Wolf hybrid but the puppies were stolen including WT , White-tip, my choice and the pick of the litter. In retrospect it's probably a good thing as I ended up getting my first Malinois-GSD rescue who was absolutely solid and brilliant, learning verbal and visual commands faster than any dog I've had since. He was not a barker, very reserved yellow eyed shepherd size dog that was on his last day at a shelter that kills a lot of unwanted dogs. I remember talking to him the first time I saw him sitting at the back of the kennel he was in and he would not repond, he just stared at me. I then looked at over a hundred other dogs there and went back to see him after an hour. I kneeled down and talked to him, asking if he liked the name Bud and wanted to come home with me. After half a minute he came up and leaned against the cage door and gave me full eye contact letting me scratch his neck and ears. Best dog ever it turned out and a bargain at $45 as he was on his last day there. He lived over 13 years. Good dog! Love you, Anneka!

Thank you! I’ve raised several wolf-dogs and this is such truthful and powerful information. Wolf-dogs are really, really not suitable for most people. They ARE beautiful and very loyal but have so many special challenges. You inform the masses in a kind and intelligent way.

Thank you for the video, it's very reassuring to see there's someone to advise future csw owners outside the country of origin (back in the country of origin there is very very strong community always ready to help newbies, even a facility to shelter agressive or traumatized csws - I can't imagine how hard it must be outside the borders of central Europe or Italy). However, I must disagree with three of your sentences. "Someone who works from home or can take the wolfdog with them to work." - Actually, most breeders strongly don't recommend this. Csw tends to have separation anxiety, this is a problem and taking them everywhere is basically supporting the problem. You should teach your wolfdog to be alone ever since you get him. If you do that, they will be able to wait at home till you get from work. Sure you can take them with you, but anytime there is an issue - health problems, change of work, or even a holiday - every solution is extremely stressfull both for the dog and for you. "Someone who can have more than one dog for company" - I know mostly owners of one csw only, and it's not a problem for the dog at all. Of course, they need the activity, they need to socialize with the dogs they like from time to time, but they don't need another furry pack member :) My csw girl I got from the shelter, she's actually a little annoyed by the csw male we got later. She loves him and plays with him a lot, but she always blooms like a flower when I take her somewhere for a few days and it's just us :D "Someone with older children or none at all" Well, with enough sensibility, it's not a problem. There is many families with small children and csws. They can be very gentle and caring towards them. Naturally, you can't let the child do stressful or painful things to them and let them have that one sanctuary-place where they can go when they've had enough of children. But I guess this is a must for any dog breed. Both my wolfdogs love children and are protective of them - even if they're not directly ours, and we never introduced them to any as a pups. "Someone with a large, fenced garden" I totally agree - if you intend to keep them on the garden alone. There's many csws though who live happily in flats or are allowed to the garden only with their owner. Flats are really not that much of a bad environment for a wolfdog, as they anyway spend most of their time literally within a radius of 1m away from you :D Naturally, providing enough fun for them and (at least) long long walks. Anyway, keep doing your amazing videos. Your dogs are real beauties!

The moment you start to mentioned the abandonment I teared up...seeing that wolf dog sleeping soundly and secure, reminds me of my late Sheaperd.

I have a 6 year-old CZW named Helli, and we enjoyed the video. We live in the Czech Republic and know other wolfdogs, and we liked the parts about what kind of person should own a wolfdog and about NEVER abandoning wolfdogs, but we did have a few kibbles, er, quibbles. I cannot imagine ever attaching such powerful animals to my body. When they see something that they really want to run after, they have the element of surprise, and the owner is going to face-plant on the ground, or worse, asphalt. Cats are not such a problem as this video makes them out to be, and in my experience, CSWs choose their friends and non-friends among dogs by temperament rather than size. Good-natured, energetic dogs that can run around with them are the best. They are lovely with kids, but one thing that I've really worried about at times are young children of guests. You know: little ones who don't have any sense at all and would like to stick their fingers into the dog's eyes. No matter what the child's mother says about them being OK with animals (while she is distractedly checking her phone), you must watch them constantly, because who knows what they would do if a kid bit their ear or tried to gouge out their eye? They will, however, defend children against adult aggressors. One time, we had a mother and daughter here, and the mother was loudly telling the 8-year-old off. Helli walked over quietly, then reared up and showed the mother her teeth. She got the point, and told her daughter that they would continue the discussion at home. CSWs also recognize their own kind, and it's great to socialize them with others. You will see atavistic wolf behaviors and instincts emerge that are fascinating.

It is very good that you insisted about what happen when being abandoned. BRAVO. And it is always important to remember that a dog IS NOT a present to a child for Christmas.

i had one... yours is veeeery good looking. If i ever have a house, i will get one again. Its the perfect dog, the best one. About guarding - i cant agree - they have very strong pack sense. Wolves guard their pack members, puppies especially. So CZwolfdogs even guards kids and ofc they guard you if they have you as a member of your pack (but they really guard kids strongly). I had a female, and she was very great even with a small kids. She even guarded a baby buggy when the kid slept outside in summer. She just layed near it.

one of my best friends is a Czechoslovakian wolfdog and I agree with everything you said 💚. He's great even with small children, incredibly patient and careful. We get on really well. The only problem with him is that he constantly whines (when he's bored, excited, impatient or when he just wants to be cuddled), which drives his owners crazy sometimes. 😆There's a video of the two of us on my channel if anyone is interested :)

HELLO FROM ISRAEL :-) You are amazing! I've been raising dogs for about 41 years. Since I was 5. My first was a real wolf just like from the forest. Colors of black and light gray. I was able to handle it and tame alone. Later, I had a special German shepherd who came to me when he was 3, after being abused until this stage. After two weeks the dog ate out of my hand and listened only to me very much. In addition, he trusted me about other people who tried to approach him. And other dogs, some mixed breeds. The last of these - Piranay is involved with English Pointer. Born and passed away in my hands at the age of 14 (98 Dog years!). He Weighed 55 kg, and had the appearance of a piranay, with character partly piranay and many of the pointer. He was an alpha dog. I trained him so good, to the point, that I talked to him like a human being, and he did and understood everything. Your dedication is noteworthy. I follow your videos and learn a lot. Thank you so much for making this video. This is such an interesting breed, and it's always great to see people who really understand them taking wonderful care of their needs. I think people are often very quick to adopt animals without having any serious idea of what they're getting themselves into. Moreover, people often adopt animals without considering their ability to take care of for them in the long run and what that commitment means for that dog. Is absolutely terrible to see any dog abandoned by their pack and family, but for some dogs that experience is life shattering and leaves a permanent mark on them that may very well be their demise. I don't think people consider that such lack of foresight results of the actual death of animals and they abandon. Thank you for taking the time to send that message out. The more people understand the full scope of the impacts that they have on the dog and that the dog has on them, the better things will go for this breed as a whole. It's a huge responsibility that comes with great reward, but is not for everyone.

I once got home for work and back then, I was still living with my parents, and a miserably skinny black Belgian shepherd was desperately trying to get some food from our cats and dogs (two Labrador retrievers). I slowly gave hum some food and started to gain its respect. To this day, I never had a dog that cared so much for me. And although he was a full adult dog, he was easy to train. For some odd reasons, dogs tend to like me (except for some small dogs) but he was way beyond amazing. He was smart as hell and really fun to be around, except when I woke up and found several dead chickens by the rear porch. Right now I share my small studio with a cat (half Turkish Angora) and I love her but as soon as I move to a bigger place, and have time to train a dog properly, I want another Belgian Shepherd or similar. I prefer to adopt but Belgian Shepherds are not that common over here, so I'll have to do my best. Buying is not an option with so many abandoned dogs. I honestly, don't think I would have the knowledge or personality to have a Czech wolfdog but again, my brother had a beast of a Rottweiler and she was as sociable as my Labradors... he really trained her well.

My dad was doing his military service when this breed was just starting. They had several of the first ones in the place where he was stationed. Some interesting stories he told me too. I wish I could have one of these magnificent dogs one day but I am not ready for such a commitment yet. Plus we have several cats which probably wouldn't end up well. :D

Trust me it's not just the owner with wolfdogs- we have a 40.3% Saarloos crossed with an American wolfdog...and he's definitely destructive sometimes. He's got a really cheeky personality! He absolutely knows he's not supposed to- and we tried chew toys, bones and pretty much every training technique under the sun. These days he rarely does it- he's 18 months now. But trust me if he has a mood- we know he will do it again. The other day he chewed the edge of his dog bed again- but when he does that we take all the bedding away and don't leave him in the house alone. Our wolfdog is also really, really, really excited when we meet anyone on walks, or even in the house. Whereas most wolfdogs are a little timid...He's extremely socially smart however and adjusts his excitement based on the person or animal and never plays rough with kids or puppies or older people. I compare having a wolfdog to having a very large, smart cat, he can only be asked nicely to do things- not told...AND he can't be tricked- unless you tell him two choices- a good option and a less good option and then let him decide. EVERYTHING with a wolfdog is about love and respect... and for anyone considering getting one- I say---make sure you never leave them alone for more than a couple of hours and you're ready to spend 2-4 hours a day doing games, training and walking.

I love how you think ahead to protect your " loved ones " from possible situations where the ignorance of Man is a HUGE problem!!!! Knowing the behavior of Hybrids or just Dogs on general.... They do what dogs do..... They can bite out of fear; not necessarily out of agreession... Unfortunately Man as a rule doesnt care why, only that someone is bitten.... So saving their lives by being ULTRA cautious with redundancies is SUPER WISE!!! It means that you love them very much!!! Thank you for sharing..... Enjoy your day....

From all the videos and research that I have done so far on this breed of wolfdog they seem comparable to a heeler in smarts and the fact that they get bored easily and need the super amount of exercise. I love the breed and can't wait until I can actually get one!!

I'm thinking of adopting a 5 month old Czechoslavakian wolfdog cross huskita someone can't look after. People get them because they look cool then realise what's involved too late and abandon them. I already have Husky x GSD and a Husky x Malamute. This video has been very informative, thanks ! 👍 ❤........... It's tragic how many of these wonderful, loyal and very loving type dogs end up in rescue centres or being euthanized. All my dog are rescue cases and it's been extremely rewarding for me and the dogs 🐺.

Awwww...that's my favourite dog. I live in the Middle East where it's not easy to find such breeds. I was lucky to have seen one in real life during my visit to Prague. I adopted one of these amazing dogs from my friend who couldn't care for him and you wouldn't believe how loving and loyal they are. They're very athletic though and they need a lot of walks. Also yes, their intelligence is nothing short of incredible. If you do not have time to dedicate to them, then please look somewhere else. DO NOT get any animal if you are not ready to commit to them for life.

Hello! Regarding the life with cats and czechoslovakian wolfdog - it is possible. I have two cats 5 respectively 4 years old and two czechoslovakian wolfdogs - one 2 years old (the female) and the other one is 10 months old (the male). They get along pretty well - the cats are the masters in the house, we thought the dogs that the cats are first when it comes to food and water, the cats can do whatever they want and they don't have a word to say. Sometimes the dogs feel the need to chase the cats, but we stop them immediately - they know this is not allowed. We also lived for a few moths in a house with small dogs (there were 3 of them) and with another 2 cats (beside ours) - there were no problems with either of them. If the dogs reach the cat they tend to lick her, not to bite or hunt.

Have been thinking to get me a wolfdog for years (esp. the Saarloos for I'm Dutch), such incredible beautiful dogs but it's a handfull and perhaps (sadly) not for me. Working from home (ideal) don't mind an independent streak (actually I love it) (again ideal) but lots of visitors, including children (not so ideal). In terms of the statements, depending on the wolfdog it can work if you work close to home and like me have two two hour shifts with a two hour break in between.

I offered two of these wonderful creatures to my parents. Both had been abandoned on the side of the road together and i got them both from the shelter where nobody wanted to adopt them because of their size and because as you pointed it so accurately they had become a little aggressive from the trauma of abandonment and probably the mistreatment they suffered from prior to that . I am a vet and ethologist so i kept them in a private part of the garden where they had enough space to run free and gave them enough time to realize that the worst was behind them , and that they would get treated properly from now on, that they would never lack food and attention and since my parents were staying with me at that time in Switzerland for 6 months while their house was being worked on. I made them feed and take care of these two beauties the whole time . After only a month and half the dogs had adopted my mother and they adopted my father soon after as family and vice versa . It took a few weeks to make the paperwork to make sure they could easily and quickly travel with them back home and then my parents changed their plane ticket to ship tickets and i drove them all to northern Ireland through the channel and ferry and then they took then we all took a nice cruise from Ireland to Iceland where they new home was waiting . (it was before Brexit, things were a lot easier to carry animals across boarders ., especially in the UK , but I also work for the WAP based in London so this helped a lot. They are now happily living in Iceland , they love the weather (Iceland is not as cold as people think) they have never shown any aggressivity and are the best companions to my parents . As a vet and ethologist and also animal rights activist and shelter owner i have to agree with everything said in this video . I also want to ask people to please PLEASE get animals from a shelter not from a shop , not even from breeders as many are extremely bad (i am talking about the breeders , all pet shops are bad) . Shelters should ALWAYS be your first choice when it comes to adopting an animal . And when you adopt an animal it is like giving birth to your kid, this is for life , you must NEVER consider abandoning them as an option. Think thoroughly before you adopt an animal and if you are not ready to commit entirely to them for the next decade or more (depending on their lifespan) don't get one . Adopting an animal is a privilege and a responsibility , if you can't accept the full responsibility of it, then you are undeserving of the privilege . This is as simple as that . And also if you can drop the meat from your diet, it will only make your life and life in this planet a lot better . Plus you'll save he economy . But that's another topic .
