Back around 1990, I worked for a training FBO established by a retired Blackhawk pilot. He wanted to train students to fly helicopters, and instead of Robinsons so many people told him were the best for training, he decided to train students on a Hiller 12C. He even hovered it off the trailer after he brought it to the hangar from the auction. The next flight was 6 months later when we finally worked the squawks out, and he was able to teach. I learned real fast the nickname of the Franklin being the Franklinstein, due to the fact that it was something of a monster to work on, lots of work, especially the starter/generator, which is mounted on the bottom of the engine, there being an oil seal, felt, which, unlike modern seals, won't really prevent oil from seeping down into the starter/generator, which seems to be allergic to oil contamination, necessitating the removal of the entire rotor/engine so the starter can be yanked out and overhauled or replaced. Right after the FAA inspector passed his blessings on the beastie, the boss wanted to go for a hop, and had his son with him, As the Hiller seats three, he asked me if I'd like to go, which got me out of the hangar for a while. We got up to 2500 ft, and the engine burped, our freshly overhauled Franklinstein, and we looked at each other, and he declared an emergency, and began his descent. The engine burped again, but we were on the ground shortly after, and after shut down, the boss and son went in, and I put the wheels on and rolled her into the hangar. Shorter story, as soon as I started getting the plugs out, I started fining tiny spheres, which were magnetic. All the spark plug electrodes had the same contamination. Shit. Turned out that one of the gears in the transmission decided to digest itself. And the transmission fluid being engine oil that circulates back into the engine, so a nifty open path for contaminated oil and a potentially fatal crash, as during this, I also learned the nickname Hiller Killer, and just how survivable autorotation is from 2500 feet, which is not really at all. Ah well, you live and you learn, what don't kill me makes me stronger, c'est la vie.

Do you offer helitours? I did that once but I was sat at the back between two other people, this one with its panoramic view cabin and the chopper being smaller looks more exciting :)

Hi there , the company FLYCOOP has put this Hiller for sale. But don't seem to respond on their e-mail. How can I find out a little more about this heli ?

🤔Does she have a clutch? The rotor starts spinning since motor does.
@PeterCzegeny3 жыл бұрын
Yes, she has. It has an automatic centrifugal mercury clutch.

@@PeterCzegeny thank you for your answer. Could you give me more information of MERCURY centrifugal clutch?
@PeterCzegeny3 жыл бұрын
@@SVAyouTube There is a bag full of mercury made of rubber, attached to the shaft. The faster the shaft rotates, the bigger centrifugalforce is awakened on the surface of bag. So the other shaft will also be driven.
