Performers in colorful costumes march through the city center while playing music. After the parade, an after-concert is held at Heiwadori Shopping Park. As the old name suggests, before the war it had a strong connotation of memorializing the dead, but now it is loved as a festival in which the local community can participate.
The number of participants has been increasing every year, and in 2013, the 81st event (held on June 8th), 106 groups (83 teams) took part. There are many participants not only from Asahikawa City, but also from schools in cities and towns in Hokkaido, such as Sapporo, Iwamizawa, Furano, Kitami, and Abashiri.
It is a seasonal early summer event in Asahikawa, with over 160,000 spectators lining the streets.
