I actually really like the removal of save or die. 4e was more of a mixed bag than people give it credit.
@Micras085 жыл бұрын
It really was. Honestly thinking back on what people liked from 3.5e I don't get the criticism of 4e being to mechanics heavy. I prefer 5e and pathfinder myself, but 4e was a decent iteration of the system and I still use a lot of the ideas from it today myself. Most recently in my SWN campaign where I used the sorcerer "thunder jump" ability as inspiration for a mech enemy :P

4th Edition's only real flaw was being called Dungeons and Dragons. It was technical, miniature strategy/battle game. It had an emphasis on spacing, thinking ahead and pure, mechanical balance. It was fun, but really felt more like a video game than DnD is supposed to. That's just not DnD. In DnD, success should come from creative solutions and daring acts of bravery. Not number crunching and managing cooldowns. If they had called 4th Edition DnD anything else, it probably wouldn't have the bad reputation it does now. Also, just a personal opinion, the art was bad. No, not from a technical level, it was all well drawn. But the design aesthetic was just really lame. It looked like WoW, and that's just not my jam.

@1finalfantasyplayer You should look into Pathfinder. All the guys that got their walking papers from Wizards when they started building 4E went to Paizo Games and kept 3.5 alive. They fixed a ton of things, gave the game a new universe, and changed the way that certain classes manifest their abilities.

I appreciate your using a polite tone. Thanks^^ Now, speaking about the game. What i'm saying is that while here in 4th i feel like everyone can do what i do - most powers, or feats, aside from utility powers, just give little numerical bonuses to next attacks - in 3th a warrior could reach Manyshot and hit multiple enemies at the same time, a mage had no chance apart from unbalanced builds. That feels really different from "you have bonus when you hit more enemies(controller)" or [continued]

I started to DM a 4e game with our group of 6 two weeks ago. I like it a lot, the games where we spent hours rule laywering are gone, now we play D&D, not Ace Attorney Rule Lawyer. When the game was done we all agreed we just had more fun. If your group is having a blast with 4e< then stick with it. If you aren't or haven't played D&D in a while, check it out. Flaming those who like 4e is quite possibly even more nerdy then playing D&D in the first place.

I'm not referring to being able to get really high diplomacy or bluff or whatever, although I did play an elf bard once who had a natural +15 to both of those skills by level 5. What I'm talking about is things like Glibness and Beguiling Influence allowing you to roll Yes on any kind of conversation check.

No need to reinvent the wheel, actually. You make quite a good point about the psionic powers, they are actually one of the classes which is different from all others. And that's exactly what we wanted... they should have thought about something like that for all classes. Something that makes them unique, the feeling that another class can't do that thing. As you can see, it's not like you reinvent the wheel every time you use a psionic power. The rule's written there, you use it!^^

Kinda what I thought as far as the balancing. And yeah action points do much the same thing in D20 Modern ( If youve ever looked at it) Though why your DM would give up stat loss and level drains baffles me. There has to be some "risk" or element of "danger" to the characters. Heck stat loss and level drains are sometimes the only way to keep fighters from disarming every trap with hitpoints. lol Thanks for the feedback :)

That means that while in the 3th edition the only ones who could petrify someone - as made sense - or teleport someone from a position to another - were the spellcasters. On the other hand, what made fighter classes unique were things like Spring Step, Cleave, Manyshot, etc... which made all fighter different from each other. Try building a warrior with rapid shot, focused weapon (bow), manyshot and those things or building it with Two handed weapon focus, Improved Critical and the such.
@w00716 жыл бұрын
Was mostly agreeing :3 I'm in agreement with everything you said except the save or dies, while it's not totally horrific as people like to describe it, a save or die that ends badly can be annoying for people that just have crappy roll luck.

4th edition is interesting in that it's far more tactically oriented. Not to mention, every class has a ton of special abilities, not having fighters just sit there and roll attack, then roll damage dice. For example, my Paladin has an ability called Staggering Smite that hits for 2x weapon damage + strength mod and knocks the opponent back a number of squares equal to my wisdom mod, which is 5 squares, or 25 feet. Thus is why it's far more tactical.

[2] "you have bonuses while making opportunity attacks and defending[defender]". The fact that he couldn't do what I did, told the classes apart. Made them feel absolutely different. Here in 4th, there *are* some feature like those, but are much less than in 3th and of lesser magnitude. They often result in numerical bonuses while doing something even another class can do. That's not a differentiation, that's specialization.
@TheMathKing16 жыл бұрын
it's because rpgs usually are in mideval based settings, and everything is ancient. Imperial fits perfectly.

@Delliserer11 жыл бұрын
[3] For the matter of identical powers, i actually said they are very similar. For instance, take a warrior at will power and a rogue at will power, Sure strike and Piercing strike respectively. They both do 1W times damage, the only difference being the first has a +2 at the attack roll. That didn't feel really different. As for class features, they actually should make characters feel different, yet they don't. [Continues]

I do agree. I also hated how games makers always tend to make classes like dagger rogue more powerful then a 2handed weapon class. Hello it a sword that 6 - 9 feet long. It will cut a rogue in half with a single swing before they can even get in to range to use their daggers. Also when has a dagger ever been kill a person in platemail. They had to wear chain leather and cloth type armors under plate. Chain was to protect the leather from from the plate. Cloth to stop the leather from chafing.

I was kinda glad when they decided to simplify 3rd edition rules. I thought it was over complicated and not user friendly. Even though they might have gone bit overboard with the whole 'balance' issues, it's user and DM friendly. Which is more than I can say about the 3rd ed.

I think it's mostly with how the wizard can do much, much better solo against a fighter than should be possible without actually working towards being a battlemage of sorts I think, can't remember cause it's been like more than 3 month's since I played any 4th ed. but time away from the edition was how the bad points my friend pointed came to light for me. Thank you for respecting it, I respect your opinion as well dude.
@Psyberdream14 жыл бұрын
Well I can only answer for myself. I was grumpy about thrd edition coming out simply for the reason of I had to buy more books. I like the D20 system, it's not perfect but it's something you can pick up and feel comfy with in a single evening. So it does it's job. But to call it D&D to me is like comparing Battletech to Mechwarrior Dark Age. hehe As far as the differences go.. wow. I don't think I could even come close in the 67 characters I have left. I'll continue
@Delliserer11 жыл бұрын
On the other hand the same things in D&D 4th, when you're lucky, give you a +2 to your next shot if you shoot while upside down holding a candle burning your nose. Wow. That's really exciting, compared to cleaving through my enemies when i kill them in one hit 'till there's no one left. My wizard in 4th edition cries out loud every time i see there's no real difference between SPELLS and powers of, say, a warrior.

Healing from a paladin you can use three times. Then welcome, pious warrior with no difference from a warrior. That's way different from having (like in 3rd) a complete set of clerical spells of your own. When i cast a spell in 3rd, i obtained unique effects, obtainable only that way. Now, when i cast a spell (which is a power...) i just use an "attack" that's very similar to the other people's. Not necessarily identical - just feels very similar.

Oh, entirely fair statement, I am being a picky bastard about it. As for things like the dire flail (and its even more ludicrous cousin, the gyrspike), to me they're saying that WotC isn't trying especially hard in being creative and figures the fanbase is willing to swallow anything they feed it. But you make a good point, and I'm now starting to wonder what 3rd Ed rules with 2nd Ed fluff would be like... definite possibilities...

4.0 is the ultimate in min-maxing. Action points pretty much gets anyone out of hot water and the only damage you take is hit points. No more level loss or stat loss makes it weak and simplified. The characters are pretty much one and the same due to all of the so-called balance. My rogue did equal damage to the barbarian in the group even when he did not have combat advantage. To make a long story short they did make it simple...I feel like it should be called Dungeons and Sesame street.

2E is the way to go for playing D&D, it´s challenging and you really learn to cherish magical items if you were lucky enough to get one. our cleric once got a Helm of brilliance, which in a later battle missed a saving throw against fire and got the whole party wiped out!!! WHere has that gone?? The chaos of being a Wild Mage is also gone!!! Being a mage in previous editions used to be a challenge, now everyone can use one. They claim it´s balanced, I call it dumbed down
