This subclass was nerfed so hard. It needs more uses of arcane shots between rests to be fun to play and viable. Something like the base amount plus your Intelligence modifier would be good.

Yeah, Celestial Warlock is the new incarnation of the Undying Light Warlock, because the name tread on the SCAGs Undying Patron and the fluff was uninspired so they changed it to Celestial Patron. And Mearos had tweeted in the past that they might change the name of the Favoured Soul to the Divine Soul as Favoured Soul had too many expectations that didn't work from its passed, so this video just confirmed that they went with that idea.

I like the idea of a gish who knows how to put temporary enchantments on the equipment they use, as distinct from one who juggles between spellcasting and martial stuff. But that should cover all armors and weapons, not just ammunition. Especially when spellcasting is mostly a ranged business already. My fear is that the arcane archer, the forge cleric and the artificer will all come close but no cigar. Another hope would be a half-psionicist.

it's pretty weird that they are doing this marketing thingy a whole month before lauching. but then again, there's gonna be a shitton of subclasses (25, right?) in the book, so I guess they're gonna get done with them just in time for launch. they might even have the time to talk about other stuff that's in the book.

I have a few complaints about the Arcane Archer mechanically, but my biggest complaint is that you can’t use crossbows with it. Second complaint is only having two shots, because it just sucks. And before someone mentions homeruling or homebrew, I play AL. There’s no skimping on the rules.

Oh I get that, I did call him adorable. I just feel bad for Laura trying to include him in situations where he is clearly no match (*cough* Vecna). I blame WotC for the lackluster subclass.

bakapolice thought about another way, Trinket is useful as a damage sponge. He can't stand up to a meteor but if used after Vecna had run out of meteors he could have soaked up hits from the skeletons. Just a strategical thing. Also, the true polymorph option would have been a good way to beef him up. It would have ruined Vecna's action economy to spend a turn dispelling Trinket's new form. Also, depending upon luck, it could have wiped off a 9th level spell from Vecna too. ^_^

From a design perspective I hope they changed the number of uses from unearthed arcana. Felt very limited in it's arcane arrow uses and the fact that it never increased is kind of lopsided when compared against spell casting.

It would make more sense to make them casters like Eldritch knights and have the magical arrows powered by spell slots, like smites, also having things like cantrips that can be delivered by arrows as a bonus action.

How about the magic arrows have to be Concentrated on? You can only have two arrows powered up at a time, say, Evocation and Necromancy, fire the Evocation, now you can concentrate on a Divination arrow. Take away the long/short rest for the Use of an arrow, and make it for the Creation of the arrow. So now, each morning, you Create an arrow for each school of magic, and you can concentrate on two of them. If you want to power up a different school, take a full round action to change your concentration from one to another, then fire that arrow. You can't create that arrow again until you complete a short or long rest, but at least you will have a quiver with other magic arrows available. That's 16 per day.

too bad this subclass missed the mark (pun intended). You are basically just a regular joe schmoe archer that can use a cool shot twice per rest. You don't get more uses ever, the special shots dont scale up until lvl 18, and you only get to chose a total of 6 types of shots at level 18 (which most people dont ever get to so you will likely have less options)

Matt DeKok Ask your DM. I'd let my player use another object to cast their arcana arrows as long as it was consistent and fit the campaign's tone. It's like letting your sewer living ratfolk use his favorite lead pipe as a proficient club.

Ask your dm. Its not really gamebreaking to allow it with other types of ranged weapons. Hell i let a player use it with fire arms for a oneshot and it was fine. The way i see it you are making the projectile magical not the thing used to launch it.

I'm pretty sure that's balanced. They have higher damage, but the arrows do the same arcane effects, and they have the Loading property to balance them out.

since its elvish in nature they traditionally don't use crossbows. Possibly a newer master of the art has been able to learn and teach how to do it with a crossbow.

Remember it is being attached to the fighter core, so there are lots of feats wound in there. The various arrows also give a lot of versatility. I am currently playing a revised ranger deepstalker, arcane archer, rogue mix. It is a heck of a lot of fun and has all sorts of things it can do outside of being a damage dumper. (that said it was able to kill an adult blue dragon at level 7 before getting rogue with minimal help from the party, bless, haste and luring the dragon out. Still, three rounds and it was down.)

Like Champion? or Frenzy Barb? tbh, this one out of all of the fighter subclasses (Besides maybe the eldritch knight with some utility spells) is the most interesting, since it gives versatility in combat, sorta like the battlemaster but not really, and in the UA it gave a skill, either nature or arcana iirc.

Why cap it at 2 special shots per short rest? Why not more as you level? Why not equal to INT mod? And I agree with people on Arcane Archer being better as a Ranger archetype. The core Fighter class adds nothing to improve the feel of the archetype... Extra Attacks are just that, and they don't really change much with you still only able to use one special shot in a turn.

Hey all can you help me? I'm playing an arcane archer level 6 now and it really sucks. I can't even use the class ability yet because I don't have a magic bow or arrows, this is because of the adventure so far, we've been sailing a lot (it's really fun). However even when I do find one you can only use a arcane shot TWICE between rests. I feel you should get shots equal to your intelligence modifier or something between rests. Should I propose this to the DM? It's not like I can even use them because it's really rare for us to find magic bows or arrows. I've only found 3 magic fire arrows so far...

1. you dont need a magic bow or arrow o use the class ability 2. you should absolutely propose that to your DM because twice per rest is trash. 3. if he/she doesnt approve, get your character killed and reroll a ranger because this subclass is absolute garbage otherwise

Why is this not for my ranger!? the fighter should be getting a new subclass to even be a good archer something like a war archer where they get a massive 6 foot long bow and are firing off siege breaking arrows and such. The Ranger deserves the arcane archer subclass.

While I think this *generally* fits fighter better than ranger, one of the major failings of 5e was not designing subclasses in a more modular way like how prestige classes were done in 3rd, so you could have subclasses that can be accessed by multiple classes as well as "multiclassing" subclasses within a class. I hope that if/when we get a 5.5 or 6th edition they keep the same concept of subclasses but refine it in this way.

+Smirk75 Agreed, and rangers traditionally have elements of a survivalist or outdoorsman that are central to their theme. For an arcane archer, none of that really applies. They are very much a martial ranged specialist.

Yeah. Of all the things I hope got changed on revision, that's the #1 thing. They were very limited in UA compared to other fighter subclasses. I suppose if they wanted to keep the arcane shots limited, they could give better damage scaling though. +2d6 damage to two shots per rest is not exactly what I'd think of as being a 'sniper.' :)

I think 2 uses per short/long rest is fine at lower levels (and not expecting an additional use at every level), but not getting ANY additional uses in the next 17 levels is a disappointment. I rarely get short rests in the campaign I'm playing in.

There should have been SOME kind of scaling per level. Getting more arrow types doesn't mean much if you're limited to 2 special shots per every 2 or 3 encounters (on average). If shots are that few, they should be devastating. If they're not, the number of uses should scale up...perhaps following Proficiency bonus scaling or something. I could see a system that borrows some mechanics from the Battle Master fighter, maybe...where you have a pool of 'points' to spend on special shots, or some such. I don't know, there's a lot of things that they could have done, but didn't. The only real disappointment in the book as far as I'm concerned.

An awesome idea in concept, that falls flat on its face in implementation. I would honestly say that the only worse fighter archetype than this would be the cavalier, and tie it with the champion. (Ideas for a fix below.) Only two uses of create magic arrow per short or long rest is the crippling blow to this archetype. And it doesn't get better until level 15 when you are almost guaranteed at least one per encounter. (Small chance that you could have two encounters within a minute of each other, depending on circumstances.) To top it off, most of the arcane shot options are garbage anyway, which really makes it worse that you learn six of the eight instead of getting more uses. However, fixing this archetype is pretty simple, and I recommend that anyone who wants to play it, tries to convince their DM to allow the following changes: 1) Move the two per short/long rest from the create magic arrow feature to the arcane shot feature. (Basically, make create magic arrow a cantrip.) 2) Move the extra 2d6 from the create magic arrow feature to the arcane shot feature. The 18th level ability will also change to reflect this. 3) Add your intelligence (or wisdom, if that's what you want) modifier to the damage of magic arrows from the create magic arrow feature. 4) Start with three arcane shot options. That's all you'll ever get but you can switch them out at any fighter level. (The options aren't great anyway, so I doubt anyone will really miss them.) 5) Change the additional arcane shot options at 7th, 10th, 15th, and 18th level to additional arcane shot uses.

I hope the arcane archer got some serious buffs, it's arrows are cool but the fact that you can only use you classes defining ability twice per short or long rest all the way to level 15 is absolute garbage. the next to closest things to this are the battle master which gets more superiority dice as it levels allowing you more options and opportunities to use those options, and the ranger which again gets more options via spells and more opportunities to use those options. Your gameplay for this class does not change in any interesting ways until you hit 15, to be blunt this class is VERY boring, I played one up to level 10 before i couldn't stand it anymore and rerolled.

I want to bring something up for everyone talking about AA being weak for only having two magic arrows. What restricts me to having 4d6 per long rest? Presumably, people think that each arrow only deals the 2d6 once, which isn’t the case for at least three of these arrows: Bursting, Piercing, and Grasping. Bursting arrow deals that 2d6 in an area, so presumably you are using it on at least 2 or 3 creatures, which amounts to 4-6d6 force damage with no save to avoid its area of effect. Piercing arrow deals damage in a line with a dex save to half the damage, but it also lets you add the arrow’s damage to the roll. Meaning that if you hit 2 creatures and they both succeed you still get a minimum of one half of 1d8+2d6+dex mod per creature. And grasping arrow, while it deals easily resisted poison damage on impact, slows the target and deals slashing damage whenever they first move on *every turn* including your friends turns. So if anyone grapples the guy you hit, hits them with a lightning lure or similar spell effect or shoves them, they take an immediate 2d6 slashing. And this happens with *no save* until they use an action to make a skill check. I don’t know, maybe I have no idea what I’m talking about. But it seems rather silly to compare this subclass to the Battlemaster. Seems to me that you just need to play your cards a little smarter to get value out of it.

They said at least two new archetypes for each class besides Wizard. Some class are getting three new archetypes. Not counted in that number are some classes from the SCAG that are being reprinted, meaning the Wizard is likely to a have both a new subclass and the Bladesinger in XGtE.

It's so overpowered, like making A force damage fireball that require an Intelligence save. I like to imagine a floating math test where unless you solve it in a certain amount of time, it explodes.
