To keep from bending the thumb Cylinder, use the Thumb to complete the Clamping force to pick up an Item. Leave the bucket set. the Thumb Cylinder will not over Power the Curl Cylinder. Mike M.

Look over the rod of that Princesses auto cylinder. I had one about that size. Cut the ends off and welded ball links on to make a hydraulic top link. Once done I extended it out and noticed a ding in the chrome. Took it back. They took it but lost my time and ball links I welded on. Got more ball links and before I did anything I pulled the cylinder out on the replaced one and sure enough the next one had chrome damage too.

Great advice and thank you for watching. I checked mine over and it seems to be OK. I think the quality control is lacking from certain manufacturers these days.

As a welder all my life I buy hundred of them in many sizes from Princes auto for things I build for people an my self. Never have had any problems with any of them. . In tim case the 1.5" one he used is not going to hold up at all. The ones I have put on other peoples I use the same 2.5' OD same as this tractor mfg supplies when factory ordered. That rod on his 1.5 od is only 3/4" or the 1' gripping any big rock takes a good hard clamp an that rod will bend even at a 6" stock and will not have the power to hold

Thanks for the enlightening video. I appreciate your level of confidence to get the job done with the tools you have. They say perfection is the enemy of good, and I often suffer from this. Watching you work through it, along with your explanation, offers me hope that I will achieve more with less.

I'm glad that you enjoyed it. Working in remote locations with sometime very little tools over the years has groomed me to do more with less. I really appreciate the compliment !!👍 good luck with your future endeavors, I'm sure you will do great.

Nice job, I'm in the middle of this same process for my BX. I have a summit rear remote kit and it's hosed up, but I need to finish the electrical and then work on the thumb. But there are plenty of jobs before that can get done. Anyway, you made it look easy. :)

@michaelmactavish4445 , I find all prices on parts are skyrocketing and other certain manufacturers I'm sure are gouging. I guarantee JD does not make their own hose but sure can charge like they do.

Great video. Nice install. I’ve used a couple of princess auto hydraulic cylinders in the past for little projects. I’m hoping to make a hydraulic dump trailer to hook to my 1975 Case 224 garden tractor. Just a little 10 cuft agri fab trailer. Doing it just for fun. I really can’t figure out how you would use a mechanical thumb ? Have a great weekend Tim. That’s my sons name. Been wet and cold here this past week. Did a little work on my pile of hurricane Fiona wood yesterday. Sunny, but cold yesterday. No mosquitoes thou, hehe.

Thanks Mister, your son has a great name. The hydraulic thumb came in really handy this weekend for me. I was talking just a bit if topsoil of around my carport and hit a stone. I was able to get the teeth of the bucket underneath it and closed the thumb on it without leaving the seat. I was happy to have it 😊. We finally started getting some very nice weather here.

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I have the same BH70 and a B2601. I am wondering exactly where you got the hydraulics connected to on the back of the tractor and what is the control you are using to move the thumb. It was hard to see in the video. It would be nice to have something like the control for the 3rd function on the loader. As for 7018 rod, I find it sticks a lot. I use Artec 222, same strength and goes on like butter, little sticking. What a great project, again, thanks for this.

Thank you very much, I have the thumb hooked up to one of the two rear remotes that I ordered with the tractor at the time of purchase. They are a factory option installed by the dealer. They have come in handy. Thanks as well for the welding rod tip, I'll be looking for the 222 from my local distributor and will definitely give them a try.

The article 222 is a sheet metal rod. Low Penetration sure it has the same 70,000 Tensile strength on sheet metal but it's mainly used reviews dickle body repairs there's exhaust systems white gauge metal rod iron railings. If your having sticking problems an spater problems you ether have your machine set up wrong. Or a cheap welder. Unless you have only a strait AC MACHINE you have to ask for the Ac 7018 witch is uncommon as the standered 7018 is a DC REVERCE HOOK UP. and is ment for heavy steel not sheet metal. Like the 222 is made for

Would absolutely love to see someone that integrated the controls for the cylinder to the BH itself, rather than rear remotes, along with controls on the BH controls so that you can use the thumb while using the backhoe without reaching for the rear remotes. I've also heard that there should be a relief on the thumb circuit so that you can't damage the thumb cylinder with the bucket. Any thoughts?
@timschison52
@timschison52 Жыл бұрын
I could have integrated it with the third function and just added a two way normally open switch and mounted it to either control for the backhoe. But I chose to go with the easy route because the only time I use the thumb is if I get a big stone when I am digging and the newly added cylinder saves me from getting off the seat. I don't use it as a grapple very often. Thank you for watching the video. 👍👍

Could you have put a sleeve in the holes instead of cutting the ends off?
@timschison52

I could have if the ports would have been in the right location but unfortunately I had to rotate the cross tube on the cylinder end 90 degrees. Thanks for watching and I hope that clears it up. 👍👍
@johnbutchc.jenkinsii8910
@johnbutchc.jenkinsii8910 Жыл бұрын
you know, you could have used 1" OD x 3/4" ID bushings in the backhoe mounting ears and stepped down to 3/4" pins and not have to risk welding on your cylinder. as long as you're only using the thumb to clamp, the 3/4" pins will hold any force the cylinder can generate.
@timschison52
@timschison52 Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for watching!! I agree with you about the bushing, unfortunately with the cylinder that I purchased the ports were 90 degrees off of where they had to be so the cross tube on the cylinder end had to be removed regardless. The cross tubes were only 10 bucks, so I figured it was the most economical solution.
