D.I.Y Trucker APU (Auxiliary Power Unit)| GHETTO APU!!

Well guys this is it the biases of my D.I.Y Apu. I ended up buying this firman 2000 watt inverter generator as my main power unit ant this portable A/C unit. The Firman is a costco unit with 2000 watt running and 1600 watt continues inverter generator. the model number is W01682 and is on sale for $350.00 dollars at costco until April 4th and after that it is $450.00.
The portable A/C is a GE Model #APFD05JASWG1 that I got at lowe's for $300.00 dollars and it's a 5100 BTU unit. I'm hoping that this will be enough to keep my truck cool. I wouldn't go out and buy one yet until I can run my setup and let you guys know if it's a go or no-go. Thank you guys as always and stay safe..

Hey, good job. I run with this set up. I ran with a piece of tarp and a barbecue grill cover strapped to my catwalk when it was outside and I was running. Stayed with that for two years without any problems till I upgraded to a box outside. 4 years in and going strong. Take care to maintenance at the correct intervals. I run the Predator 2000. If anything had happened to it during the warranty period I would be able to exchange at any Harbor Freight. Good luck to you, stay cool

Be careful with the exhaust fumes Carbon monoxide detector in the cab might be a good idea

for sure but most of them got CO sensors ifsome problem happens and alot of CO goes through exhaust, it shuts off

Im buying my first truck and am considering doing the same thing along with an idle smart unit. APUs in my experience are always breaking and I am not losing mu truck for apu repairs

Never had much luck with single hose ac. Found dual hose works better. Guessing for a truck it will be ok. Fun video

Not sure if you have seen my video about this but it might help with some ways to setup the ac. I HIGHLY recommend making an ambient intake for the ac system to cool itself instead of sucking your cold air from the cab to cool they system and dumping it outside. The only difference between that gen, the Champion generator and other similar units is the fuel pump. None of them are designed to do what we do with them they just luckily work well for what we need. Sorry about the long comment. Good video sir.

i have same A/C but with harbor freight gen 2570 works great only down side is gas tank too small but this week ill install a five gallon tank.

Cut a Peace of plastic glass to fit the window and roll the window up to hold it it make it a little bigger than the plastic peace go to nomad trucker and watch how he did his buddy

Great video Jorge. I love the ghetto APU. You probably be able to get a fitter cover made at a upholstery shop out of canvas or something for the generator if decide to mount it on the catwalk. Just an idea.

Nice but may I suggest something??? Instead of using the generator and the hassle of buying gas all the time buy some lithium batteries and charge them directly from your truck thru a Dc to Dc charger ….. much easier and efficient, my Ac unit runs off of them 12-14 hours no problem, and they charge back while I am driving in about 8-10 hours

My only concern is the vapors from the gasoline filling your cab plus it will need to cool off prior to storing and make sure it can't tip over and spill gas out of the vent cap.

New here but not new to transportation business✌️🤙 LUCKILY Prices on generators are dropping due to solar power stations like blue-etti’s so just stick w these small generators I say... Plus those solar deals only have so many charges b4 all u got is an expensive paperweight. 🦋Like that you’re reaching out to those having ideation thoughts, I think it happens to almost everyone at one time or another and just to have a mention from one acknowledging will change ones thought patterns and they’ll know someone gets it and understands. And that means also we’re not alone in it and have a ear when we may need to talk about it💛💟💛

it drove me crazy cuz had to fill up midnight and take in and out everyday i built a box with exhUst to side, 7” fan and 6 gal extension tank on top of box only negative thing is u change oil frequently more than APU waterproof and u cNt hear anything

I did the same, I bought a 12000btu air conditioner at Costco, the problem now is that it is not cool to use in the hot noon, the effect is not good, only when I use it at night, can I feel cool, maybe my air conditioner is not good , I ask your 5100btu air conditioner, is it cool when it is used at noon?

Have you had any issues with company you work for about the generator on you truck and you pulling hazmat tanker/iso? I also pull hazmat tanker want to do the same to save money 💰

Have a metal box built the size of your generator on your catwalk with a lid to open and close and put the generator in it and lock it up💯💯💯👍‼️‼️‼️

I usually run a mini fridge I keep a microwave in my truck I also keep a TV and a PS4 in my truck. Do you foresee any issues with this? I do not run all of them at once of course

It's an Inverter Generator...not an inverter. The "Inverter" is an adjective. When you use "Inverter" as a noun...it's a specific device that inverts DC to AC power.

No as long as you put the generator behind your drive tires facing away from the cap. I bought a carbon monoxide detector as well

@@ATruckersLife I had a carrier every time I turned around it cost me. Water pumps dang I think I put 10 of them on it. Also it had a hose that had a 90 in it. Very thin hose. They always broke. I was climbing a mountain pass my coolant light came on. That hose broke and drained all of my coolant out. That cost me big money. But you may be on to something with this system. I am watching to see if it keeps your truck cool in the hot Texas summer.

Ever thought of staying at cheap hotels. Apply for CLC card Write off hotel expenses. I once work for a company that did that. Never wanted us to sleep in the rigs, especially idling. I guess that only helps us if we on a 34hr reset I look forward to your plans on the AC

Hi I have used these small generators for years. The cheaper ones have problems. Like a cheap pull cord, they don't well in the heat. I make a tent to keep the sun off my Honda. Before you invest , consider, do you want support for your engine start in cold weather? A Espar hydronic might be ok for your engine, but the Espar can heaters are difficult to keep working. In the summer, for me, I drive during the day and use the truck a/c. Then at night I plug a small fan into my Honda 2000i . It Ok but not great. Tom

I have a question. At Heniff, are you required to have a pump, compressor, and heat in transit to lease your tractor with them? If you have to have a pump, does it have to be hydraulic or can it be shaft driven? Thanks for your answer.

I know some trucks don't have anything but it limits you to loads and I've seen some that have shaft driven pumps so I really don't think it matters. They pay better if you have everything or at least a pump..
