How many times have you heard people discussing the ‘D to D’ ring measurements when it comes to saddles? Did you know it means nothing? Nothing. Zilch. Niente. Nowt.
In this video, Poppy Webber BSc, MA, SMS QSF, smashes that myth and explains why it’s so inaccurate.

I really loved your cob saddle fitting video . It really helped me and made me feel better about my ponies flat back . I have a wonderful saddle fitter , she is kind and understanding and very highly qualified but I would love you to fit my saddle xxxxxxxxxxxx

Is there a way for saddle owners to check the angle of the tree without going to a saddle fitter? There is NONE within a 6-hour drive of me and I'd just like to figure if the saddle I want is medium or narrow. Thanks.

it really is a visual thing. eg the front of the tree needs to match the template taken from the 8th thoracic vertabrae area... and to do that you need to take an accurate template (use a flexicurve) and know how to see the angle of the tree - some are easier to see than others. If you want to know what width your horse is, you could get a template and then try matching it to the gullet bars that you get in, for example, the thorowgood or wintec saddles.

@@ADayInTheLifeOfASaddleFitter Thanks. I have both an older Stubben dressage and a Schleese dressage and while they both kinda fit when I am not mounted I am not sure of the fit while I AM mounted.

What place can you measure the width then if you can’t get a saddle fitter and it doesn’t say on the saddle?

Most saddles will say it on them somewhere. You could try and see if you can see the angle of the tree. And compare it to a gullet bar from an adjustable saddle for a rough estimate. Or get a clear photo from the front and ask your saddler.
