Hello and welcome to
DIY & Garden
Today I’m going to show you How to build an inexpensive, space-saving Hydroponic system
In this video you will learn How to start a Hydroponic garden
From building the system to prepare the nutrient solutions, and How to choose the right water pump
Let’s get started
Note: for this system, I am using UPVC (Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride).
Start with connecting the sockets to the pipes
You don’t have to use glue, instead insert the sockets fully inside
Use a hammer to get push them fully inside/ A few knocks with a hammer will do the job.
Using the drill, male holes on top of the pipe
The distance between one hole and another is 20 cm
And 10 cm from the end of the pipe to the first 2 holes
drill all the pipe,
the size of the holes is 55 mm
next connect the reducers to the pipes, except one side of any tube
Insert it well to avoid leakage
Now connect to the End cap to the socket (the one we left it) , you need 10 cm of 4” PVC pipe to join them
that will be the first pipe to receive water from the reservoir (the inlet)
you need (l0 cm of 4” PVC pipe)
to join the End Cap with the socket
Now make a small hole on the top (the inlet)
Now we finish the grow pipes/ well ! we’re done with the grow tubes
You need:
8 Pcs 4” S/steel U pipe clip
16 pcs 6 mm PVC WALL-PLUG
16 PCS TAPPING SCREW
8 PCS 4’’ S/STEEL U PIPE CLIP
I highly recommend to use the S/steel clip, don’t use the PVC U clip, easy to tear and break
8 mm drill bit Safety Equipment Work Gloves Eye protection
I will fix this system on the wall in my backyard
You choose the place that suits you, balcony, porch, sidewall depends on your space Measure 4.5 feet from the ground and put a mark
Screw one side of the U clip
Now place the first grow pipe (with the inlet)
Using the level ruler make little slope
Repeat the same process, fix the other side of the tube
Measure and cut 3 pieces of 55 mm PVC pipe each 1 ft.
And cut another 7 pieces each 10 cm
After that connect the 55 mm ELBOW, then followed by the 1 ft. long pipe
In the Same way complete the installation of the other tubes
If you have someone to help you, will be better
If you are doing the work alone, try to find something to support the pipes
Now the system is ready to use.
Use tap water to test the system and wash it off
Make sure that the water is flowing well into the pipes and there are no leaks Et Voila our system is done and ready to use
How to prepare hydroponic solutions
Fill your reservoir with tap water
Add the plants nutrition Add a few drops of pH down
most hydroponic gardeners use liquid or dry fertilizers
Liquid fertilizers are often easier to use because they are easy to measure and don't require much mixing
Slowly adjust the pH until the meter readings are within the target range
Any pH up and pH down products should always be handled with caution (Avoid skin contact)
Stir the reservoir by hand or use a pump to circulate the nutrient solution to disperse the concentrated fertilizer after each addition
Measure the pH after reaching the target EC.
Add fertilizer in small increments to avoid over fertilizing.
Check the EC after adding fertilizer and continue adding small amounts of fertilizer until the target EC is reached
My target is between 1.5-2.0
Water pump
Water pump specification:
Voltage: 220-240V
Power: 45W
Max flow Rate: 2500 L/H
Max lift Height: 2.5 M
Outlet: 16mm / 19mm
Size in mm (L*W*H) (110*75*120)
Place the suction cups help keep it in place, so you can stick on
This pump coming with 2 outlet 16mm/19mm
I’m not going to use them
I’m going to replace it with 20 mm PVC Connector
I recommend a pump with the outlet on top, easy for you to connect it to the pipes
It needs some adjustment
An Adjustable knob to control the water flow rate, so you can get just the amount of water pressure you want. Place Place the pump and Stick the suction cups With 20 mm PVC pipe connect the pump to the tubes.
thanks for watching

Nice idea and thanks for the detail on the solutions used. A few points. You headline this as cheap but then used far more fittings than required. Also, with a 3/4" feed from the pump not even running at capacity, you don't need 11/2" connections between the grow tubes. If you stand the assembly off the wall on 2" wooden blocks you will avoid the condensation around the grow tubes damaging the wall. Also gives a little more room for the plant to grow. If you stood it off the wall by even more, you cut down possible routes to the leaves by pests like slugs etc. 👍

I've had success with indoor salad greens growing already, so now I hope to expand to some different options with doing a vertical wall set up. Thanks for the detailed build 👍. Early in the video it looks like there are 5 grow tubes. In the final, there are only 4. The yield looks like 20 grow spots. I would actually like the additional 5 grow spots with 1 more tube. 3 types of lettuce + basil + cilantro. Do you think that would work? How did you calculate the amount of nutrients? Is it so much per plant or so much per volume of water? Thanks.
@DIYGARDENWITHBB

Hi Michael It looks 5 because I used short clip from my previous video , its all depends on your space , try to make it even numbers so your inlet and the last tube will be at same side. The ratio of the nutritional solution varies from one plant to another . Start with leafy vegetables ..

First off Thank you so much for taking the time and money to share a detailed instruction video for free to all who want to learn and give it a go !! One thing I've noticed about all these hydroponic setups both indoor home and larger scale production labs is you seem to be fairly limited to what you can grow such a micro greens...small herbs and small amounts of salad leaves although I could be ignorant to its full scope of use it's just all I ever see grown is small salad leaves. In fact this outdoor set-up seems to have way more viable options than the usual modern electric setups. It just hurts me as a home grower to see people paying $20+ for 8 tiny docs of peat with a single seed in each. Especially the real fancy counter space setups most take months to grown enough leaves for a hobbit sized salad 🙄

Love the video. Thank you for sharing. Hydroponics is such a great way to grow. If I could add my two cents, and you probably already know this, but you'll have to paint the tubes a dark color to prevent algae from taking over. It'll rob the water of oxygen if you let it. If you already have algae, don't bother breaking the entire system down to clean it. Just paint the tubes a dark color and make sure you don't have any algae in the reservoir. The algae will die without light and then get circulated and reabsorbed by the plants.

Using Tapcons for the wall would be a more secure than plastic drywall plugs, as those usually break under any sort of strain. They also don't bite into concrete very well. Tapcons literally tap the concrete like tap and die tools, and will hold a great deal of weight. Also, drain plugs with screw caps in the bottom of each of those would allow for drainage and cleaning so they can be used for longer periods. Water, no matter how clean, gets slimy. If you start getting root rot (and even if you don't), it's a good idea to have 35% strength food grade hydrogen peroxide on hand to add to the water (make sure to mix very well in your water solution, and only use the recommended amount). It's used to clean veggie bins at supermarkets and such. However, be very, very careful with it. It will give you white spots on your skin because it's caustic/corrosive at that strength. Even the first aid stuff isn't something to use a lot, because it eats scar tissue.

@@kemolollen5714 I live in Germany at the moment but you could get most of what you need at Home Depot for pretty cheap. I watched some videos, got inspired and the system I built is using elements of all of them. I have a small balcony so I had to build something for that space. As long as you follow the basic principles you can build a system in any shape. For me the most expensive part was the hole saw attachments and the hydroponic nutrients. Also nobody mentions this but your water pump needs to be strong enough to pump water to the top of your system. Mine barely makes it at 2 meters high but I had to return 2 pumps before I found one strong enough. The "ready made" kits are really overpriced for what you get

yes you most likely will get algae very easy build up in tha system. it can however be prevented very easy. instead of the green box at the ground use a black one with a black lid on. make sure that absolutely no sun light gets in the box with the water and then you should be good to go with that system. i might actually build about 20 of those shown in the video. another thing to note is that sun light can come in through the plant holes. that can be prevented with a sponge or proper amount dirt/nuts ;)

It looks very professional, but the PVC piping made it prohibitively expensive for me. 4" fittings are really expensive since they're rated for pressure while this is a non-pressure holding environment. Projected cost for doing this was $40 in the pipe alone, not to mention the brackets. Making it out of rain gutter (I'd probably use vinyl downspout so it's still got the benefit of sealing off light from algae) is probably WAY cheaper and requires even less fitting. I will say this looks MUCH more professional tho

There seems to be very little flow rate. When you show the plant roots, they seem to be sitting in quite deep water. Isn't it better to have them sat in very little water, and to have it flowing over the roots to give an even distribution of nutrients, and maybe to tilt the pvc rows so the water is running downhill at a quicker rate?

Hi there! You don't have to worry as long as there is dissolved oxygen in the water.

Hope this is a Sensible Question. I have noticed a few comments regarding Oxygen Content in the Water. Would a “Bubbler Stone”, the same as those used in Fresh Water Fish Tanks, be of any benefit??

When tamping the couplers and parts together, use a piece of 2"x6" board. It will enable you to apply relatively even force to the entire circumference with each tamp.

One major flaw in your system, the outlet at each section of the planter pipe is not located at the base of the planter, it’s a bit raised which will result in pooling of water in the system at all times. Roots of plants in the lower sections of the planter will end up rotting, you should have placed the outlet at the bottom point of each exit
@DIYGARDENWITHBB

since the water is always running the oxygen is always there so you don't have to worry about root rot

@@waltermclean6212 Nah, it should be okay as long as you don't cut all of it. It should continue to grow roots, just like pruning, but on the roots. Just don't go nuts and shave the entire root system.

Since your inlet and discharge tubes are above a water line you might have considered individual drain taps so you can do a complete evac for a nutrient change. Otherwise yoo always have nutrient in the pipes no matter what. Nice setup though.

Great job looks good How often do you run the pump? I have a similar setup and I only run my pump for 15 min every 8 hrs to top off the tubes. Kind of using mine like a Kratky system. And my tube are level so I always have just over an 1" of nutrient in it.
