They're not unconnected. When you tell a corny joke and the other person laughs, it makes you feel satisfied. But Abby's good at keeping a straight face, which makes Alan more desperate and say increasingly-ridiculous things... which causes him to break. He would never get to that point against Andrew or Matt because they would probably laugh at the first joke.

I was not 100% certain Alan was totally clean going into this. Even if he was he obviously changed his approach to the whole show. "Do you think I give a f*** about winning or losing here?"
