open.spotify.com/album/7dK54i...
Lemonade is the sixth studio album by American singer Beyoncé. It was released on April 23, 2016, by Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records, accompanied by a 65-minute film of the same title. It follows her self-titled fifth studio album (2013), and is a concept album with a song cycle that relates Beyoncé's emotional journey after her husband's infidelity in a generational and racial context. Primarily an R&B and art pop album, Lemonade encompasses a variety of genres, including reggae, blues, rock, hip hop, soul, funk, Americana, country, gospel, electronic, and trap. It features guest vocals from James Blake, Kendrick Lamar, the Weeknd, and Jack White, and contains samples and interpolations of a number of hip hop and rock songs.
Lemonade was released to widespread critical acclaim and is considered to be one of the greatest albums of all time. The album was music critics' top album of 2016, and was named the greatest album of the 2010s by publications such as the Associated Press. In 2020, the album was placed at number 32 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. The album was nominated for nine Grammy Awards at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards (2017), including Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. It won Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best Music Video. The album's visuals received 11 nominations at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards, of which it won eight including Breakthrough Long Form Video and Video of the Year. The film also received four nominations at the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards. The album won a Peabody Award in Entertainment.
Lemonade topped the charts in various countries worldwide, including the US Billboard 200, where it earned 653,000 with additional album-equivalent units, including 485,000 copies in its first week of sales. It has since been certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). By the end of 2016, Lemonade had sold over 1.5 million copies in the United States, making it the third-best-selling album of the year in the US, and it was the best-selling album of 2016, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), with 2.5 million copies sold worldwide. The album was supported by five singles: "Formation", which was a top-ten hit on the US Billboard Hot 100, "Sorry", "Hold Up", "Freedom", and "All Night". In April 2016, Beyoncé embarked on The Formation World Tour to promote the album, an all-stadium tour visiting North America and Europe.

Some of my favorite iconic moments of the Lemonade Era: 1. The film.. I mean cmon. 2. Adele insisting Beyonce should’ve won AOTY at the Grammys instead of her (and literally breaking her award in half to give to her!!) 🥺 3. The Becky with the good hair controversy 👱‍♀️ 4. Her slaying Daddy Lessons at the CMA awards despite racist backlash 🤠 5. The absolute meltdown conservatives were having over her performance of Formation at the Super Bowl 🤡 6. Her Grammys medley where she was pregnant with the floating chair 😥😱 7. Her BET awards performance of Freedom with THEE Kendrick Lamar (the dancing in the water?!?) 💦 8. The 6 Inch performance for TIDAL

The comment about the distortion in her voice on Don't Hurt Yourself is absolutely spot on. In the music video, she's in a car garage as if she's found his car parked somewhere it's not suppose to be or she found him inside the car. I interpret it as she's screaming at him through the glass, making what he hear slightly muffled and echoey but still bold loud and angry while seeking shelter inside the safety of the vehicle from her rage.

That would be me a few months ago. I don’t know how I slept on this album, and her, for so long. She really is underrated, despite the fame. Most people just know the radio hits…and those are good, but they barely touch the surface of what she puts out on her albums. I particularly love this record because I’ve been there, and I can relate to all the emotions so much. The hurt, the anger, the determination, and, most importantly, the love that runs through. Just soooo good.

She said it best she wants her body of work to last, tell a story, have meaning, etc. That’s why she stays in these eras for so long and during that time she truly went through every stage of grief and somehow managed to tell her entire story. It’s timeless.

It always been so crazy to me that so many people don’t even try to look into Beyoncé’s work. She actually talked about it in Renaissance and her movie but as a black woman the different treatment she receives from the general public is so obvious. I remember when Lemonade came out I was discussing music with one of my teachers and was saying how amazing the album was and she rolled her eyes and went like « yeah everbody loves her i don’t understand » girl you didn’t even tried ?????? People automatically classify her as a typical pop artist and resum her catalog to songs such as Single Ladies and Crazy in Love without even trying to listen to her albums. You can’t say Beyonce is propably the best female artist of our time who does it all without people trying to downgrade her and immediatly say she’s just overrated. Despite providing high-quality work for years, she still doesn't receive the respect she deserves. She is being compared to individuals who do not provide as much quality and versatility as she does. Artists like Taylor or Madonna do not have that problem…

Daddy Lessons is just a perfect track, it fits so well in the album storytelling because it unveils yet another side of Beyoncé. It shows us that she was is some kind of way prepared to what could’ve happened to her because in her childhood she saw other women in her life experiencing the same things. And the track is musically incredible: just as we are going back on B’s life, we’re also getting to the roots of black culture/folk music. Amazing.

Even before Beyoncé went solo, most of us (including myself) had a presumption of who Beyoncé was based off of the media. The media has tried to downplay her TALENT and influence in mainstream media for nearly a decade now. She IS the reason all new music is released on Fridays, she IS the reason surprise releases became popular in the 2010’s, she IS the reason visual albums became more popular within the last decade. Sure, it’s 2023 and in terms of popularity, we have the likes of Taylor Swift, but, we still have a living legend outperforming, out-singing, still peaking creatively, and we need to be more aware and receptive of her work past the “image” that the media has placed on Beyoncé.

Lemonade is my favorite album of all time. It is spectacular. She joined intimate themes and mixed them with social and political elements. That’s PURE art. Even the variety of genres. It is not only to showcase Bey’s deep emotions through her healing process, but also a rescue to her black roots. Rock and country are built in black culture and she wanted to take that back. The whole album is empowering, significant and emotional. No wonder it was considered one of the best albums of the decade. Rolling Stone even considers it as the best female album of the 21st century. That’s amazing. Cool fact: Lemonade was also the best selling album of 2016 worldwide.

Much like dad, I sorta ignored her due to fame/the big singles that got overplayed, etc. until Lemonade, was completely blown away. This album was for Beyoncé not only to bare her soul to the world regarding the infidelity during her marriage but also to show that she can do everything musically. She gave Rock, Country, Reggae, R&B, and many more genres while at the same time giving a cohesive album! People don’t understand how hard that is!

This album is a masterpiece and so overlooked sometimes. Pray You Catch Me is a never skip for me. The opening is like an audio stim, it’s so rich. Highly recommend the full film. Her poetry between the tracks, the visuals throughout, the weight of her words - it still gives me chills.

I don’t think people understands how hard she works. I hate using overrated to describe any artist. But I cannot stand when it’s used for Beyoncé. Popular things and people are over hated, but Beyoncé should not be. She genuinely worked from the age of like 7 up all the way up to now. She’s a classically trained vocalist, a dancer, a composer, director and more. The hype she has is more than deserved, and many people don’t know these things. (editing this now made me realize I probably should’ve said I was talking about people in general. I loved this reaction btw and I love the dynamic of this channel❤️❤️!!!)

I strongly recommend you to watch the Lemonade Film, it ties the songs even better in a story of grief and reconciliation And on the topic of cohesion it showcases the reasoning of songs like daddy lessons in the album. Lemonade is a really personal project, but it also states that beyoncé's story is not exceptionally hers, it is a commentary on how trauma and distrust is built and passed on many black relationships, and how hard it is to break a cicle of lovelessness. This vision is expanded on the visual part of the album (which I may or may not have the link, in case you are interested in watching :) )

You’d have to be Beyoncé to 1) afford to use Zeppelin while still paying royalties out the ass and make money on it and 2) to be so worthy of it. I have a love affair with everything on Lemonade but Don’t Hurt Yourself takes the cake as far as sound. Freedom is a close second if not tied.

I feel like people hear the most popular, made-for-radio songs from her past discography, but the new albums, where she has more artistic control, really highlight her artistry and the things that make her tick. Truly so talented. I also love that Don’t Hurt Yourself draws directly from When The Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin, which is an homage of her love for classic rock and a nod NOLA, which was a huge influence on this album’s visual art.

I'm glad that you mentioned this somewhere in the video because this was also the album that really put her music on my radar. I remember hearing songs like Don't Hurt Yourself, Daddy Lessons and Freedom for the first time and being mind blown mainly because I expected her work to be only in that R&B/pop field but hearing elements of rock, country and reggae in these songs and other songs on the album really made this a special listen for me. And of course she did it again later with Renaissance and dance/electronic music. She's really one of a kind!

I think the different genres in the songs highlight the stark differences between the different stages of grief that her (and every person) experience when there is a break of serious trust. If you notice, at the end of 6 inch she whispers “come back.” It’s such an empowering, boss song that talks about how she is respected outside of the home, but has to plead for her partner, quietly, to “come back.” Just an amazing album. Glad you guys reviewed it!

The thing I love most about Beyonce is that she is very private and she only lets her craft speak for herself. Lemonade is basically her response to all the rumours in the press that Jay Z was cheating on her. It is quite sad that, as your father mentioned, she is spoken about all over the place, not for her music, but rather for her personal life.

It's so fun to see your dad discover this music. This is easily one of the top 5 albums of the 2010's, and most of it is extremely derived from Beyoncé's experience with Jay-Z cheating on her. First of all, who the fuck cheats on Beyoncé? Second of all, the concept of this album was absolutely birthed from that elevator where Solange was beating him up 🤣 As a gay man, I feel like I have a special connection to Beyoncé, and my entire life is based around her musical eras. We laugh together, we cry together, we dance together. She is truly the artist of our generation (sorry Swifties, your fav could never). ALL HAIL QUEEN BEY
