Listen up. I’m from the BX but we moved to PR in the 80s. We were there and we were rockin to the Fat Boys, Fresh Prince etc. Hip Hop was getting comedic, light hearted. Then my boy Carlos came by with this tape in his car. He took out his moms living room speaker and he had it wired in his back seat of the car. He just said to us, “you have to hear this”. We heard that entire tape. We didn’t bob our head, we didn’t speak. We were speechless, frozen, no words. It changed us. It was like an instant rite of passage. We knew Hip Hop, or we, would never be the same.

when i was in college playing football they would hook us up with jobs for the summer and i would do concert security and was doing this rap festival ,and i did backstage security.so these rappers were on ,(the 2 live crew)and some guy sticks his head out the stage door, and it was Eric B. and he asked me what i thought.and i was a long haired buff white dude ,into heavy metal mind you.and this guy ,with this fat gold rope around his neck ,is asking me what i thought..i was like this is horrible, and he said "don't judge hip hop by what you see here.then he introduces me to Rakim, and i walk them down to the stage .and it was over , the way this guy could put words together and tell a story like he did"' BLEW ME AWAY''... this guy(Rakim) is so smart and intelligent it was amazing .i ended up talking to them back stage ,got their stage passes signed and everything ,and still remember them tell this day .and i was 19 yrs.old and im 51 now.and that's how i got introduced to the ghetto...much respect...

im 19 , my dad was one of the best reggae artists of his city Meknes back in the 80's before he joined the millitary and slowed down , i grew up only on old school music , blues - jazz - golden hiphop - reggae - rock , and everytime i try to listen to this new school stuff , i feel like they got records contracts so easy anyone can rap nowadays and get easy bread , but i read books about hiphop and music in general . And every genre u love , they will always take notes from the past . Why i dont love new shool rap ? Because from rapping and reaching out to people about Government Corruption - Poverty - Drug Abuse - Police Brutality , stuff that we actually suffer from , to rapping about Women - Money - Gangster wanna be , stuff that we dont need to hear about .

Rakeem was a game changer, Rappers pretty much rapped the same until Rakeem came with something different. For example Rakim was the first to rap across verses. I remember my first time hearing "Eric B is President" and thinking.. "what an extraordinary rap style" and everyone said the same. At the time it was customary for rappers to rhyme the first word of a verse with the last word of the same verse (like a traditional nursery rhyme) but what Rakhim did was rhyme the last word of the verse with the last word of the following verse, immediately effecting the way the record sounded. For example in their follow up hit the classic "I know You Got Soul," there's a line where Rakim says.. "So as you sit by the Radio hands on the dial SOON .. As you hear it pump up the VOLUME"). It might not seem like a big thing today, what with there being a million different styles of rap, but back in 1985-86 there was only one style, so it was a quite a radical thing to do. It was like breaking the rules. But once the record blow up, it was as if it gave some long awaited permission for every budding rapper to change up their flow. It was the first time rappers realised that by changing the flow they could effect the sound and flavour of a record in even more interesting ways. Rakim basically gave birth to the modern MC and is one of the main reason why so many still consider him the GOAT.. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bZ2grbub1NTem5s.html
