That line changed how I perceive life. Im very competitive in all parts of life and used to always worry when I was younger I’d never have the best life, then hearing that made me realise that I can be happy as possible now as long as I’m grateful, and even in my future success I will make sure to be grateful for every thing I have in life down to the most fundamental levels.

Just to clarify on this discussion you two are having, Hip Hop has always had conscience rappers. Early 80's hip hop talked about social issues, in the 90's there were still afro centric songs and political commentary in rap. J Cole and Kendrick Lamar are a part of a long legacy. While rappers have always bragged and showed off they have equally been advocates for their communities. We used to call rappers street reporters. The talk of gangs, drugs, parties, and drama were all like headlines from the hood.

"Love Yourz" Love yours Love yours No such thing No such thing as a life that's better than yours No such thing as a life that's better than yours No such thing as a life that's better than yours No such thing, no such thing Heart beatin' fast, let a nigga know that he alive Fake niggas, mad snakes Snakes in the grass let a nigga know that he arrived Don't be sleepin' on your level cause it's beauty in the struggle nigga Goes for all y'all It's beauty in the struggle nigga (Let me explain) It's beauty in the struggle, ugliness in the success Hear my words or listen to my signal of distress I grew up in the city and though some times we had less Compared to some of my niggas down the block Man, we were blessed And life can't be no fairytale, no once upon a time But I be God damned if a nigga don't be tryin' So tell me mama please why you be drinking all the time? Does all the pain he brought you still linger in your mind? Cause pain still lingers on mine On the road to riches listen this is what you'll find The good news is nigga you came a long way The bad news is nigga you went the wrong way Think being broke was better No such thing as a life that's better than yours No such thing as a life that's better than yours No such thing as a life that's better than yours No such thing, no such thing For what's money without happiness? Or hard times without the people you love Though I'm not sure what's 'bout to happen next I asked for strength from the Lord up above Cause I've been strong so far But I can feel my grip loosening Quick, do something before you lose it for good Get it back and use it for good And touch the people how you did like before I'm tired of living with demons Cause they always inviting more Think being broke was better Now I don't mean that phrase with no disrespect To all my niggas out there living in debt Cashing minimal checks Turn on the TV see a nigga Rolex And fantasize about a life with no stress I mean this shit sincerely And that's a nigga who was once in your shoes Living with nothin' to lose I hope one day you hear me Always gon' be a bigger house somewhere, but nigga feel me Long as the people in that motherfucker love you dearly Always gon' be a whip that's better than the one you got Always gon' be some clothes That's fresher than the ones you rock Always gon' be a bitch that's badder out there on the tours But you ain't never gon' be happy till you love yours No such thing as a life that's better than yours No such thing as a life that's better than yours No such thing as a life that's better than yours No such thing, no such thing Heart beatin' fast, let a nigga know that he alive Fake niggas, mad snakes Snakes in the grass let a nigga know that he arrive

Worth mentioning that he actually made a splash on the mixtape scene in the late 2000's with a heavy skew towards socially conscious hip hop. On his first album, however, he felt the pressure to release braggadocio songs in order to chase commercial success. This album was a return to his roots, as symbolized by him naming it after his childhood home address and buying the same house from that time.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, but chasing those materialistic pleasures won’t ever fulfill you. You always be chasing the next thing, car, house, job, woman etc etc You have to appreciate the things that you have, the real things, then you will finally learn to love yourself and in turn those around you (who actually love you for you). I think that’s what Cole was trying to express or at lest what I get from it. Great song choice btw and God Bless ☦️

Conscious rap has always been around. Most Def(one of my favs), Talib Kweli, KRS One, Dead Prez, Queen Latifah Most rappers are some blend of conscious themes and flexing.

One of my favorite songs ever. Always makes me tear up and I listen to daily for personal reasons but this song came out after me and an ex-gf broke up. And so it makes me tear up in a happy way. It is just beautiful.
