i wanted to get some wisdom on open D tuning and I got it, but with extra stuff!

Damn, I've never seen anyone retune a guitar like that before.

after playing around with alternate tunings for years,( and somewhat struggling at it) you managed to put everything in perspective in one video.You are an excellent teacher, and funny as hell I might add, which kept my head in there. Thanx so much, and I'm heading to your website.

Great stuff Matt. I went from a neo-classcial metal guitarist in my younger days to a acoustic folky player now almost 50. Learned a bunch of Michael Hedges and similar stuff and had a good bit of gigging success. Now I only perform for my dogs on the front porch,lol. Thanks for some refreshing tunings to play with .

Great stuff Matt! I love the statement about the flap of skin disappearing. Great explanation about open tuning. Problem is, now everyone knows!

Dan Leary asked Matt, "How do you tune so fast?" Ear training helps. Know your tunings and what they sound like, and eventually you'll cop that Matt Smith-approved ninja skill of tuning on the fly! Ear training, you can do with your favorite songs. Figure out the key of the song, and listen to other songs in the same key (E, A, and D are popular in guitar-based music). It's a "relate-theory-to-what-you-already-know" method, but it's how most "Ah hah!" moments come about. I speak from experience.

I took Matt's "Chop Shop" at the (now defunct) National Guitar Workshop (with my grandson!) some years back and it was the best week I ever had in guitar instruction. I still have his book (mentioned in the video) of the same name and it is chock full of great ideas, advice and playing tips. I owe my love of alternate and open tunings really to Matt's tutelage.

Matt wanted to send you props , ive been sliddin , and slippin for almost 40+ years myself and just gave a lesson to a friend but wish i had the words to explain what my fingers are saying ,your a funny guy and know how to teach and keepit fun , I dont like practicing ,i love the results but you you could have made a world of difference in me 40 years ago.. Down home we call it sloodin ,( ex. "yes sir he slood that thang plum off the neck ". After many years in road bands now settled and retired in Las Vagrants I like to try and nail a person down with their sense of humor and mannerisms , I hope you dont mind my little game but would happen to be from Wisconsin?
