Welcome to the first in our Celtic, low-key masterclass! We're going through an introduction to the popular guitar alternate tuning, D A D G A D. Just learning a few basic chord shapes and giving some ideas on how to incorporate existing fretboard knowledge.
Check out this video on relative minor if you haven't seen it:

A little about me:
Sean Daniel is a man. A man of simple needs and desires. And the one desire, no, the one NEED, that stands above all is to spread the challenges, joy and intellectual stimulus of music to people of Earth and beyond.
Born on the mean streets of upper middle class suburban Chicago, Sean learned the ways of the world through the dizzying heights of success to the lonesome depths of failure and emerged with the promise of a better tomorrow reflecting in his eyes and fiery passion in his belly.
He plays and teaches guitar on his KZfaq channel where he regularly releases original music and projects to the adulation of legions of fans, who often compare him to Chris Pratt and one time Ryan Reynolds. He’s currently in the market for a nice leather jacket.

DADGAD Tuning - fingering for 24 chords of the Circle of Fifths To get started, most of the chords can be made with two simple finger positions, with small variations for using minor chords. Example: A - xx2242 and Am xx2232 or A - xx7677 and Am xx7577 You might see performers using this tuning and applying the middle finger to the top bass strings on some chords where I have it as xx (looks like they're giving the bird) There are other ways to make these chords, but these are the simplest. After learning these you will be able to play Pachelbel's Canon, or Hotel California with ease. Fingerstyle picking is fun too! D - xx0200 or xx7797 G - 55oo2o (big stretch needed) or xx5455 C - x32032 or xx5575 F - xx3233 or xx10101210 Bb - xx3353 or xx8788 Eb - xx1011 or xx99119 Ab - xx1131 or xx6566 Fm - xx3133 or xx10101110 Cm - x32o31 or xx5565 Gm - xx5535 or xx12121112 Dm - ooo201 or oo7787 Am - xx2232 or xx7757 Em - xx2022 or xx99109 Bm - xx4454 or xx9799 F#m - xx4244 or xx11111211 C#m - xx6676 or xx1191111 G#m - xx6466 or xx13131413 Ebm - xx8898 Bbm - xx3343 or xx8688 Db or C# - xx6686 Gb or F# - xx4344 or xx11111311 Cb or B - xx4464 or xx9899 E - xx2122 or xx99119 A - xx2242 or xx7677 Scales are a bit different in DADGAD, but that is for another lesson. Cheers! and Your Welcome!

Nice video. I tuned my Gretsch resonator to DADGAD, earlier today, and was poking around youtube looking at DADGAD videos when I ran across yours. Applying the chord scale concept on strings 5-4-3 is obvious, now, but I didn't think of it until you pointed it out. I also liked the "build a chord using notes from the first octave of the root-on-5th scale shape" idea. Cool stuff. Thanks!

Growing up as a shred-head, looking up to older cats for advice n stuff, I got alot of that "no, actually it's.." and "what are you fucking stupid?" type of instruction. Really helped me not pursue music the way I intended to. Now I see guys like you and Tyler from Music is Win doing your damn thing and it makes me happy to see that change in climate. Dadgad is just a 4th and 5th of D. Alternating these over octaves is pleasant and works both ways going up or down, so D up to A is a 5th but going down is a 4th. This is used in classical Indian music and is the common sitar tuning, has been used for hundreds of years. It is the simplest and most pleasent ratio to our ears. Also the 5th is close to the golden ratio

You probably have a bad nut and it's rough and grabby. You need to clean your nut slot. Get some really fine sand paper, 400 grit and 800 grit. Loosen up the strings and pull them out of the slots, get a small piece of sandpaper and fold in half and run it through the slots to get rid of the roughness and the gunk out of there. Then repeat with the 800 grit. Once this is done, put some graphite in the slots with a fine pencil. It's important to remember that you are not trying to make the slots deeper...just smoother so be gentle. If you make the slots too deep then you will get fret buzz. You just want smoother slots and your guitar should tune better, stay in tune longer and no string breaks either. Good luck.

A lot of my songs, I write in a tuning similar to this, but I've slightly altered it, for the reason which I'll explain. The tuning is (everything is 1/2 step down from this): C, G, D, G, A, D. The reason I detune the low E and A strings is because I like being able to barre power chords on, not only the low E, A and D strings, but also the A, D and G strings. It also allows me to make some funky chords. Another tuning I use in one song (Egyptian Boats on my channel), is (again, 1/2 step down): E, A, D, E, B, B. Very creepy chords in that song.
