Charlie Berens takes the job of packing the truck for the family vacation up north very seriously. Like a game of Tetris, Charlie packs the truck bed of his Chevy Silverado to the brim, since using a trailer would make him look weak.

My dad is even more intense. Preparation starts a week before we leave, where dad finds out what we absolutely have to pack and what we're packing it in and if you think your bringing extra, well you better find room for it in the area around your seat because it is not going in the back of the van. Everyone has to be packed by the night before and you must leave your suitcases by the door so Dad can start his Tetris an hour before we're supposed to leave.

The part that truly speaks to me is when the packing is 100% complete, and it is truly art. You step back to admire it...and you trip over 2 bins, 3 plastic bags, 4 toys and a suitcase and you ask, "Where did they come from? I didn't factor those in..." And your family just looks at you like they have not committed a cardinal packing sin.

As a guy who constantly fights with those who bring too much, I can appreciate this. It took a lot of convincing others to leave things home. We went from from enough stuff to fill the bed of a full size pickup with a topper (and not being able to see out the back window) to camping in a Prius. Yes, a Prius. My dad actually did the tent thing one year. He also forgot the cooking equipment. Shortest trip ever.

This was too real. Especially the part about the family waiting until the last second to bring down their suitcases. I swear my wife waits until an hour past the stated time for departure to start packing and getting ready. I wish I could simply sleep on demand so I could just take a nap until she's done so I could be asleep rather than frustrated.

Ahem. As a wife, I will say that since we do EVERYTHING else for EVERYONE ELSE, we can start packing at the departure time. Why? Because we laid in bed the night before me tally packing for the whole family, the dog, and then we gave up sleeping and cleaned the bathroom. Also put the mail, paper, and Amazon deliveries on hold. Also had to check on the parents. Also had to do our paying jobs. Also needed a pedicure, with or without polish, because we're ladies after all. And every Tums, Tylenol, and Tinactin for the foot itch that will come from all y'all wearing barefeet and flip flops. Oh and we have to BUY said flip flops for everyone. And new bathing suits and trunks for, u guessed it, everyone. Ive seen superheros do this feat pregnant. So ya, how about fudge the departure time and pull ur weight, and all the kids? I'm not hateful, just never going camping with my family again. 😀

@@pthaloblue100 mine won't lie, so I had to convince him to just start two hours earlier and not give me a time out the door. If he doesn't help change the laundry, at least rinse the dishes, and get everything we need out to the vehicle. I'm not going to be ready.

@@JNMKlover that is certainly not universal. I have generally been the one who has packed everything shared, as well as for myself and our son. While continuing to work for my paid job as well. I remember telling him hey Pop are the blankets on the workbench the ones were supposed to put in the truck for camping he said no. Now we got up into the mountains out of nowhere a freak storm comes in and it ends up being 30° with winds making it feel like 10 degrees during the day around a campfire to negative 20 degrees at night and all we had was the clothes on our backs whatever extra clothing we might have packed. With no floor blanket, no cover blankets, and just our sleeping bags in our tent, we did not get very much sleep for 2 nights.

0:20 Yup that's pretty much my life each weekend we go camping... Every piece of gear has its place in the back of the jeep and when one of them isn't ready, the whole task comes to a grinding halt. Cell phone bit reminds me of when the wife asks me to add one last thing to the cooler(which has already been topped off with ice) that's buried all the way at the bottom of the pile.

Don’t forget the flipping on of the hall light when they open your door. Your eyes are peeled open by the intrusive light & you’re blinded. Thanks dad.

My late husband Jeff was a packing pro and was sorely tested when we road tripped from St. Paul, MN to Colorado with 3 adults and 3 kids, one in a car seat and picked one more kid on the way back. All were females except for said husband. Our chariot of choice was a 95 Chevy Suburban. Fond memories.
