This time on MonarchsFactory I'm telling the story of Icarus (but really of Daedalus the inventor and his escape from King Minos because Icarus isn't in it very much.

Something about mythology is that they never pay attention to the small details--like when Odin just drinks a bunch of mead, turns into a bird, and flies away and regurgitates the mead and then they have mead? And not stomach acid and old food and also mead? And how did he *not* run out of string? And, ya know, the whole minotaur thing...and tying a string to an ant?! They're very vague on the logistics. On the other hand, most of the time I don't really want an explanation.

I think the idea with tying a string to an ant is to show off how dextrous daedalus is to be able to manage that. Uh as for how he could do it, I suppose you could make a snare and sort of push the ant into the mini snare and that way the string is now attached. I don't think it would be as easy to tie it by physically holding the ant.

I love how Talus/Calus's inventions are so practical, a potter's wheel, a saw. Meanwhile Dedalus is designing fake cows, impossible labyrinths, and functioning human wings thats are super unstable. Makes you wonder what sort of ridiculous, overengineered solution Dedalus had for cutting wood, maybe a pinwheel of axes operated by a hand crank.

Another great retelling of the Icarus/Daedalus myth is through two songs by the band Thrice. “The Melting Point of Wax” was written when the band was younger from the POV of Icarus, and captures the excitement of flying and boldness of testing his limits. Their later song “Daedalus” was written when the band members are older, some being fathers themselves now, and tells the story from Daedalus’s POV. It’s a lament about his son’s death, questioning why didn’t he listen to Daedalus’s advice. It’s really cool to see the story told by the same people twice, when they personally connecting with a different character for each version.

"Was but a wee bahby" . . . "Was" . . . Sure. Anyway, there was a series of gamebooks called the Cretan Chronicles where you are the half brother of Theseus, Altheos, trying to find out how your brother died in the Labyrinth. When you finally get to King Minos' court, you can have him tell you the story about the sea shell and the string (which he apparently survives in this version). He leaves out why he was chasing Daedalus or specifically what he did when he caught him, but at the end of his tale, he picks up the shell by the ends of the string and snaps it taut, shattering the shell in your face. The moral of the story, he informs you, is don't get too smart for your own good. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Greek law basically expects that if you are convicted you will self-exile rather than face the death penalty. They didn't really care if you died, they just didn't want you to hang around anymore. So there doesn't need to be a real "escape" all the Greeks would have just understood the exile as a version of his sentence. The practice was common around the Ancient Mediterranean-- Rome had specific agreements with other cities that they would let ppl go there for exile rather than face the death penalty if they chose to go before sentencing.
@Dmitriy1917
@Dmitriy1917 4 жыл бұрын
Exile meant dead anyway. It was very hard to survive outside of community (problems with food, shelter, wild animals, etc), and exiled person was not protected by law. Anyone could take one as a slave, or kill them without consequences.
@MonarchsFactory
@MonarchsFactory 4 жыл бұрын
Throughout Greek mythology, though, exile and execution are separate specific sentences. For example, Bellerophon's story begins with him being exiled for a murder. It would be very unusual for a story to mean exile but say death when the outcome for the narrative would be the same. Rather I think it was likely part of a pattern in the storytelling to show Daedalus as a character who was so crafty as to escape his "fate" multiple times.

The Icarus version of the pride myth fits into a pro-Christian culture. The other story of pride you mentioned legitimizes the greek gods as a status of power. While Icarus's story is about an unworthy person trying to come too close to the sun. Which is a much more biblical idea of heaven. So in a pro-Christian/anti-polytheists culture like colonial western Europe, which is the culture who fetishized and collected together greek myths. It'd make a lot more sense to use this story instead of one that talks about the greek gods as on par with 'God'.

Talos, Kalos or Perdex? I don't know about the first and last, but I think Kalos is the Greek word for "beautiful"? Which sounds more like an epithet than a name (but given that there are Anglo-Saxon fictional figures called things like Shield... maybe it is a name). Edit: Regarding the end of the story, I heard a version in which Daedalus became the tutor for Cocalus's daughters, and it was the daughters who claimed to have solved Minos' seashell threading (they asked Daedalus for help solving it); the three of them killed Minos to protect their tutor.

Historically, the idea of the Minotaur actually comes from the sport of Bull-Jumping-- athletes (the captive Athenians among them) would practice grabbing the horns of a charging bull and using them to vault themselves over the bull to safety. Naturally, if you weren't good at it, it would kill you. It was a form of entertainment.

Y'know, I only ever watch your D&D videos, but something made me watch this. Maybe it was the copious amounts of gin I've had, but entertaining nonetheless.

Am I the only one who thinks that Daedalus didn’t tell his son to fly too close to the sun? I’m thinking when Icarus fell to his death he just told everybody that he warned him not to do it.

As a father I assure you that Daedalus absolutely told Icarus not to fly too close to the sun but kids never effing listen. As a son I can sympathize with Icarus because how was he supposed to know this would be the one time his dad actually knew what he was talking about?
