How to Grow Harvest and Condition Daffodils
Daffodils bulbs are planted in the fall for an early spring show and harvest. The bulbs should be planted pointy side up, in well draining soil, and planted in full sun or partial shade.
The entire daffodil is toxic. Exercise caution, and wear gloves when harvesting. Pull daffodils rather than cutting them. Cutting them will encourage the toxic sap to flow freely, but pulling helps to curb sap production.
Harvest singles as the gooseneck stage and doubles half open for the longest vase life. Daffodils still in the pencil stage will not open in the vase. Avoid harvested any daffodils that have reflexed or tissue paper like petals. These blooms are far past their prime. Let the foliage die back naturally to replenish the bulb for next season.
Condition daffodils by placing them in cool water for 6 hours. Let the toxic sap seep out from the stem. After 6 hours have passed, dump the water, clean the vessel, and refresh with clean water. At this time, daffodils are properly conditioned and are ready to be paired with other flowers.

After harvesting Daffs in my garden for over 30 years now there is a young lady to explain to me that I´ve done it wrong all the time! THANK YOU! Pulling it is. I´m always impressed by your knowledge, Danielle. Great informations as always. The only downside of these plants is that some varieties smell very bad. Not the ones in the backyard, oh no, the ones beneath my patio area. But I love them and don´t have the heart to ged rid of them. Take care, happy gardening, Hanni.

I had to learn to battle squirrels last fall & my duck since December. Ducks attack ranunculus! Just FYI. Now - My daffodils started blooming yesterday & I had to look up on YT to see if you had a harvest video. Now my issue is the 2022-2023 bulbs that didn't come up - I ordered a mixed bulk box of various types, mixed them all up. 2024 they are coming up & I can't tell if they are doubles 🤦🏼‍♀️. I was going to go cut all the goosenecks (superstitious) but will have to wait on all blooms landscape wide to see what we have. I am super grateful for all your videos!!! Our climates are so similar & you always have great info!!!

I never knew daffodils are toxic! No wonder the flowers last so long. In my areas tulips don’t last more than a day or two because of the wildlife so I switched over to all daffodils. I never cut them either because I didn’t think they would last in a vase. I have learned so much from you. Thank you. You’re a great educator.

I have been gardening most of my adult life and I admit I learn something new from every video you post. Always great content and information. Today I learned how to harvest my daffodils and realized have been doing it wrong all these years! Off the topic of daffodils, I planted my foxglove, sweet peas, snapdragons and delphinium over the last several days (after hardening off); I would have never dared to attempt this (in my zone 6b) until I started following your channel (and reading Cool Flowers). This was fantastic! I am always torn between leaving them in the garden - because there are never enough- and picking them for the house. The obvious answer is to plant more!! And I have never put them in a vase with anything else because I didn’t know about conditioning them. So good to know. The only pest I have here is squirrels. While they don’t touch the daffs as you said, tulips and crocuses are their Easter candy. I have great results sprinkling a little blood meal on the soil after the bulbs are planted. Squirrels just seem to go for the bulbs, so maybe not effective for rabbits and deer.
@gardengatesopen
@gardengatesopen 3 жыл бұрын
I have lots of squirrels too. They used to dig up every Daff I planted, take one bite, and toss it to the side! Then I stopped using Bone Meal, and Blood Meal to see if that changed anything. And VOILÀ!!! No more squirrel interest in my Daffodil bulbs!! The squirrels probably aren't attracted to the blood meal since they are vegetarians, but I do have other nighttime creatures who pass thru my yard, and I just decided to not tempt them with anymore Blood Meal too, just in case! It's a bummer to not be using the Bone Meal anymore though... It did produce such good results. Now I add Rock Phosphate for calcium, and this seems to be working pretty well. I think the Rock Phosphate takes a while to be absorbed by the plant roots, so the results aren't so obvious. But it's better than nothing!

How many stems do you typically harvest from one bulb? Do you recut the stem when arranging, or would that release more sap?
@NorthlawnFlowerFarm
@NorthlawnFlowerFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Emerson! It depends on the variety, age, and size of the bulb. It does release a bit more sap when you recut them, but I have found this inconsequential. It seems to be only trace amounts and not enough to cause death to other flowers. Tulips seem to be the most sensitive. I'm doing some more trialing so hopefully I can give an update soon.

This is a question way off topic but it came to mind while watching.... if I plant snaps without pinching (after hardened off), the first cut I make on it will be its pinch per say and it will begin branching at that moment, right? I want to plant my snaps now but if I pinch they will just be too short for me to feel comfortable planting but I need to get them in the ground!
@NorthlawnFlowerFarm
@NorthlawnFlowerFarm 3 жыл бұрын
That's exactly right! The first cut would be like a pinch and will be branch from that cut. I believe I showed that in a video I did last year on snapdragons. If you fast forward to the end of the video you can see how I cut very deep.

Hi there! I usually try to do a mix of gooseneck singles, and half open doubles with some foliage and filler. Often after the six hours of conditioning (or sometimes it will be overnight that I condition) the singles have opened up to halfway. I tried to sell just gooseneck stage alone - but I think it's hard to draw people in with that as they are quickly driving by.

Or is it safe to use them straight away in floral arrangements? I've wanted to use Daffodils in arrangements this entire season and haven't been sure! Have a great day!
