You Can't Eat The Grass

Күн бұрын

Ian's personal goal is to be able to do all the tasks on the flower farm by year 5, so this week - we are sending him to farm school! The farm is behind schedule and the countdown to the farmers market is only 1 day away. So Ian steps up to help harvest the cut flowers and arrange the bouquets. The only problem is that first he needs to learn how!
__________
Ian and Serina of YOU CANT EAT THE GRASS feel that every small change can make a big difference to the world we live in. Every garden planted leads to a better future. We hope to inspire and motivate others to make positive changes in their lives by sharing our journey towards greater sustainability as we build our family farm. It's hard work to build a life worth living, and completely worth it!

I too need repetition when learning something new as well as not only verbal instruction but hands on experience to solidify the new content I recently learned. I would be intimidated as I don’t like wasting time or resources. You have shown you have determination and you’re goal driven. Good job!!

My favorite video thus far! Ian remember your efficiency will grow and knowledge will too. Be kind to yourself and remember that Serena’s guidance may feel overwhelming or critical at times but it comes from a place of been there done that. You’ll still have to go through the same struggles she overcame to get good at it. I grew my first bouquet flowers this year thinking how easy it would be to put one together and boy was I wrong. It’s such a learning curve. The cool thing is you have an abundance of flowers to experiment with.

Glad the roadside stand is doing so well, Serina. It’s just amazing that you can do as much in a weekend as the market especially after school has started and money is tighter. Ian did well with his first bouquet. He’ll be a huge help in the future. 😊💖🦋🕊

Oh those zinnias....and that red amaranth. The cosmos are so cute; the rudbeckia are beautiful. Oh who am I kidding. I love them all! This video really did a lot to show how difficult it is to make a great bouquet. Bravo, Ian, for trying so hard and committing to the cross training and support, in addition to everything else you do! You two have a beautiful partnership, and that isn't easy. The bouquets were beyond gorgeous, and so the market was too! No surprise there! I love your positive attitudes. The information gathering you do from year to year to use for future planning is just phenomenal. Super fantastic video!!!

It is good to point out the lack of speed during the learning curve. I was once installing tanks at an edible oils facility. It took 3 hours for the first one. One hour for the second one. One half hour each for the third and fourth! I had a job at an injection molding plant. There was a process where no one could keep up when they were new at it. But once learned, the same process seemed slow and boring! When farming/gardening we need to remember that we are slow in the learning curve. Speed will come automatically, we don't have to force it!

You both work super hard and i would guess that if you were paid an flat hourly rate for all the work you did you would be millionaires! There's a lot of headwinds coming down the road for 2023 so i guess cutting down on your overheads will be a ongoing priority for you both....purchasing bouquets of flowers are a luxury item for more and more people I would guess. No worries Ian you'll do great, pretty sure you'll even be able to cut zinnias. As for time, you're never going to gain time when first training, it always actually takes MORE time in the beginning because your stopping to explain and show them how to do it. Don't over complicate things, price list is essential for any business. Important for each of you to be able to do the other ones jobs, NO ONE should be irreplaceable. You've got this Ian!👍

Even if Ian does slightly more than half the cutting, you two will be further ahead. Might I suggest a chart for the cutting, knowing how the flowers grow during the season should help you both understand why certain flowers take longer to either cut or process. Right now, personally, I would be buying the "cut then dry" bouquets. Winter is drab, flowers that were once alive, but still beautiful dried will bring back memories. That could be a theme, if you want.

You did a great harvesting job, Ian. You would be surprised or shocked to know how many of your viewers are learning right along with you. I thought it was wise, what you said about wanting to be able to handle "all facets of the flower business" by year five. With you and Serena being only owners/employees, it's really important that both of you be able to handle "all facets of the flower business". Life happens and with it being your livelihood; again, wise goal and will pay off. I practice Serena's criss-cross flower stem arranging.....and it is not easy. Practice makes perfect!
