Short Synopsis:
Inspired from a real life incident and based on he novel of same name by Suchitra Bhattacharya, Dahan looks closely into the life and attitude of the educated middle-class in Calcutta. Dahan tells the story of two women, Romita and Jhinuk whose lives are turned upside down by a traumatic incident. When a newly-wed couple Romita (Rituparna Sengupta) and Palash (Abhishek Chatterjee) were attacked on the open road, nobody came forward to help. When one lone schoolteacher, Jhinuk (Indrani Halder), rushed to the spot she was hailed a heroine by the press. But punishing the assailants turned out to be a frustrating experience for her when even the victims and their family decided to back out. Director and screenplay writer Rituparno Ghosh made a pointed statement about middleclass hypocrisy in Dahan. The performance of each protagonist makes the film worthy of the accolades received.

বাংলাদেশ থেকে বলছি।এমন সিনেমা দেখে ভেতরটা স্বাভাবিকভাবেই নাড়া দিল।গল্প,গল্পের বয়ান অপূর্ব। পরতে পরতে চমক ছিল।ঋতুপর্ণ ঘোষ বড় চমকটা দিয়েছে,সুচিত্রা মিত্রকে দিয়ে।এমন সহজ আর সাবলীল! আর একটা কথা বলতে হয়;আমরা দুটো শব্দ বলি:একটা বাহ্ আরেকটা আহ্।বাহ্ বলার সময় বুদ্ধি খাটাতে হয়।মানুষ আহ্ বলে মন থেকে,হৃদপিন্ডে কাঁপন লাগলে।দহন দেখে তেমনটাই মনে হলো।আজ ২০১৯,সুচিত্রা ভট্টাচার্য, সুচিত্রা মিত্র,ঋতুপর্ণ ঘোষ এঁদের কেউ নেই।আমরা যারা তাঁদের ভালোবেসে বড় হয়েছি বা হচ্ছি ঋণ অপরিশোধই রাখলাম।বড্ড বেশি ভালো অনুভূতি জেগানোর জন্য, নিজের সামনে বোধগুলোকে সমুচ্চারিত করার সুযোগ করে দিলো বলে,হৃদয় নিংড়ানো ভালোবাসা-ই।

প্রিয় লেখিকা সুচিত্রা ভট্টাচার্যের কালজয়ী উপন্যাস "দহন"। কত যে ভালোবাসা, শ্রদ্ধা মহাশয়ার প্রতি, মহাশয়ার লেখার প্রতি; ঋতুপর্ণ ঘোষকে অনেক ধন্যবাদ তা কয়েকগুণ বাড়িয়ে দেওয়ার জন্য।❤️❤️❤️

অসম্ভব সুন্দর এবং শিক্ষনিও একটি সিনেমা!! আমরা এই রকমের সিনেমা আরো চাই!! বর্তমান এর কিছু কিছু সিনেমা দেখে মনে হয় জীবনে আর সিনেমাই দেখব না!! কিন্তু এই ধরনের সিনেমা দেখলে মন ভরে যায়!! দহন ,সত্তই একটি দারুন সিনেমা♥️♥️

শ্রবণার ঠাকুমার চরিত্রটা সত্যিই অসাধারণ। সমাজের বেশিরভাগ মানুষই নিজেকে স্রোতের দিকে ভাসিয়ে দিতে জানে কিন্তু যারা স্রোতের বিপরীতে ভাসতে জানে ন্যায় সত্যের বিচার করতে জানে, তাদেরকে মানুষ সবসময় একটু অন্য চোখেই দেখে সাধারন ভাবে মেনে নিতে পারে না। স্রোতের বিপরীতের মানুষগুলোই সমাজে নতুন জোয়ার আনতে পারে।

Again I have enjoyed this masterpiece today. I have been never felt boring a lot when seen this movie again. One viewer has been tried to rectify my earlier comments on this movie probably by saying that I have mistakenly quote to actress of the movie as Suchitra Mitra acting of which actress touching my heart. Hence she has told that it is Suchitra Bhattacharya in lieu of Suchitra Mitra. I know very well that the story line of this movie has been adopted from the creation of Late Suchitra Bhattacharya. But in my earlier comments, I actually have been mentioned the acting of Suchitra Mitra, that lady who has been portrayed the character of "Thammi", the Grand Mother of "Jhinuk", I,e, of Indrani Halder. However thanks a lot for her concern for seeing my comment. 🙏

Cinema onek chhoto belaye parts e dekha, kichhu scenes mone pore. I remember ei novel ta, was there in our school library. Ekbaar issue korte cheichhilaam, librarian korte de ni😋 Ekhon aami 27, almost 20 years baade movie ta dekchhi, koto relevant and apt golpo. Erokom cinematic masterpiece khub kom dekha jaye!

আমরা মেয়েরা এমন হয়ে সমাজে বাঁচতে হয়।নিজেদের ইচ্ছে বলতে কিছু নেই। অন্যের ইচ্ছাকেই মেনে নিতে হয়। মুভিটা সত্যি সত্তা কে জাগিয়ে দিল।বাংলাদেশ থেকে দেখলাম ঋতুপর্ণা আপুর সব মুভি গুলোই অন্যরকম।

This movie was released in 1998, your life has changed and traveled from east to far west in a long period but the story resembles that of today even after passing of 21 years... @@debasishchakrabarti4921 এরকম কোনো কথা নেই,যে বাঙালি বলে বাঙলাতেই সবসময় মনের ভাব প্রকাশ করতে হবে।এই ছবি টা দেখাবার পর ঠিক এই কথা গুলোই মাথায় এসেছিলো আর এই ভাষাতেই এসেছিলো। তাই সেটা কে বাংলায় অনুবাদ করে কমেন্ট করার কথা ভাবিনি।আমার মতে,অনুবাদে সবটা ধরা যায় না। ভালো থাকবেন।

বাংলা ছবি দেখে ইঙরেজী তে ভাব এসেছিল আর সেটা ইঙরেজীতেই প্রকাশ করতে হবে না হলে কি বাংলা ভাষীরা বুঝতে পারবে না 😇😳🤭 এটা যদি The Last Lear, Memories in March দেখে হতো, তাহলেও বাংলা তেই লিখতে হতো, কারণ লিখছে বাঙালি, পড়বেও বাঙালি। এটা কি কাফকার 'দি ট্রায়াল' বা মার্কেজের 'ওয়ান হানড্রেড ইয়ার অফ সলিচুডে'র বঙ্গানুবাদ!!!! আসলে ইঙরেজী তে লেখা একটা আত্মপ্রসাদের প্রকাশ। গত এক বছরে ইউ টিউব, ফেসবুকের অভিজ্ঞতা, রবীন্দ্রসঙ্গীতের প্রতিক্রিয়া হিসেবে wow, amazing, awesome, so nice, namaste, GIFY, ইঙরেজী তে মন্তব্য। রবীন্দ্রনাথ যদি বাঙলায় লিখতে পারেন আমরা কি বাঙলায় মন্তব্য করতে পারি না 😗 এবিষয়ে লিখে অধিকাংশের বিরক্তির কারণ হয়েছি, অনেকে একমত হয়েছেন। এও অজ্ঞানতার, আত্মপ্রসাদের প্রকাশ। শুভেচ্ছা সহ

This might be Abhishek Chatterjee's finest role. He was severely underutilised, and we won't be able to do anything about it ever again. He played the role of Palash, an almost antagonistic character with such finesse! I doubt any other stars in that time would accept this role. :)

If I have to really say anything, Thami' s conversation in the last few scenes, really sums up lives and its roles and a lesson, also at the same time, to bury ego in relations. The Director and producer have really strained their faculties of imagination and creativity, which otherwise, could have been banal.

ঋতুপর্ণ ঘোষের অকাল প্রয়াণে বাংলা সিনেমার যা ক্ষতি হল , হয়ত সেই ক্ষতি আর কোনদিন মিটবেনা। এরম বাংলা ছবির জন্য বাঙালি হিসাবে আমি বড় গর্বিত বোধ করি।

Patriarchy is so deep rooted in our minds that it won't be eradicated even in the next hundred years. What an absolute gem of a film! Rituparno Ghosh was indeed a genius, especially when it came to movies that dealt with complex human emotions, evil societal practices, and patriarchy in general.

ছবিটা দেখে যেন, নিজের জীবনের প্রতিচ্ছবি পাই... যে প্রশ্ন গুলো বার বার মাথা চাড়া দিয়ে উঠেছে, যে স্বাধীনতা র মধ্যে আনন্দ দেখেছি, সেটাই শেষ অংশে দেখে ভালো লাগছে.... সম্পর্ক থাক না তাদের জায়গায়... শুধু তাদের উপর নির্ভরশীল না হলেই হলো..... নিজের মধ্যে গুমরে মরার চেয়ে যন্ত্রণার কিছু হয়না.... তুমি অন্য কারো সাথে বেঁধো ঘর যদি বলতে হয়, বলে দেওয়াই ভালো... বাকি জীবনটা গোছানো যাবে 🙂

What a beautiful portrayal of emotions...a realistic approach to the burning issue of women safety not only outside but inside their own home... culprits went scot-free and the one who was bold enough to stand against them was publicly humiliated in court...this is our hypocrite society...

This outstanding work by Lt. Rituparno Ghosh reflects a number of dark sides of the indian society.. On one hand, the story portrays the ways in which mankind, clouded by its cheap sense of judgement accepts defeat in-front of corruption. Where on the other hand, it reflects the true nature of a male-dominated society that crushes women with its narcissism.

I am not a complete supporter of feminism. This film not only depicts dark side of indian society but also dark side human psychology, individuality and dilemma. That's where Rituporno ghosh succeeds. He was above average and one of the champions of parallel indian cinema. This film is one of the great works of art.

Seeing these films reminds me how much I love Rituparno Ghosh.&He was a jewel for Bengali as well as Indian films. Sudden demise of him is a great loss for Indian movie. Watched after 20 years of its release but believe me....the mindset of 'Men ' hasn't changed yet..nor in Bengal nor in India. These type of movie will always remind women that in India you will always be a Second Citizen no matter what...educated or uneducated ..u will be crushed any moment if you 'dare' to speak against a Male dominated society.Men applaud such daring women... movies before others, unfortunately behave like Paulash or like Jhinuk's boyfriend behind closed doors. যদিও এটাই বাস্তব তবুও বলি ধরণের ফ্লিম দেখে অপরাধের মুখোমুখি হতে সবাই একবার ভাববে। মুভিটা খুবই উ- নিক খুবই বাস্তব।

হয়তো বা কোথাও আজও কিছু নিয়ম সমাজের বেড়া ডেঙাতে পারলো না যা কিছু নূন্যতম নিয়ম মানুষ নিজের সুবিধার্থের জন্য প্রতিষ্ঠা করেছে। আর কিছু মানুষ এখন ও তা মুখ বুজে সহ্য করছে । সব কিছু পরির্তন হলেও কিছু কুসংস্কারের ও অন্ধকারের মধ্যে আজও মানুষ ডুবে আছে উজ্জ্বল টা বাহ্য ই থেকে গেলো । অসাধারণ বইটি।এক কথায়।

Such a lovely movie... An eye opener.. I wish I could go back to the Early Vedic Era, where there were no discrimination regarding gender... Women were not just lump of flesh then.. They were equal to men.. We discard old things they are "backdated".. But old is gold... We must remember... My heartiest congratulations to the legend Late Rituporno Ghosh for the movie... Indrani Haldar and Rituparna Sengupta were fabulous.. Their work is beyond praise... Lastly Thank you so much for uploading the movie... 🙏🏻🙏🏻

The movie was released about 22 years ago but is still relevant to our society... Rituparno Ghosh, Rituparna Sengupta and Indrani Halder are all legends and all three got National Awards for their contributions in this movie but credit must also be given to Abhishekh Chatterjee who was dark horse and carried loads of abuses of our female viewers for his role... More importantly, full credit to the late Suchitra Bhattacharya whose story had inspired Rituparno Ghosh to make this movie epic... যে সম্পর্ক মানুষকে কষ্ট দেয়, একে অপরকে বোঝে না,সে সম্পর্ক থেকে বেরিয়ে আসায় উচিত। বাইরের হাজারো মানুষের কটাক্ষ অতিক্রম করা যায় যদি কাছের মানুষ গুলো সঠিক হয়। আমরা আজকের দিনেও এমন সমাজে বাস করি সেখানে অপরাধ বা অপরাধীকে খারাপ চোখে দেখে না, তারাই যেন স্বাভাবিক আর যে প্রতিবাদ করতে যায় সেই বড়ো দোষটা করে ফেলে, আর এভাবেই মানুষকে সমাজ, আত্মীয়-স্বজন, চুপ করিয়ে রেখেছে। ধিক্কার জানাই এমন মানুষের মানষিকতাকে।।

এই মুভিও মানুষ ডিজলাইক দেয়!!! তাদের মাথায় কি??? তারা কি মুভি পছন্দ করে জানতে খুব ইচ্ছা হয়। 😒 আমার দেখা সেরা মুভির একটা 😍 একেকজন এর পারফরমেন্স সেরা ছিলো। ইন্দ্রানী, রিতুপর্না ওয়েল ডিজার্ভ ন্যাশনাল উইনার ✌ এই টাইপ মুভি আবার কবে দেখব, তা অনিশ্চিত 😞

@@nayantarataipei I meant classic not like Charulata which is reality but aesthetic. Dahan was a grim serious incident and Rituda made the film in same manner. It is comparable to Manikda's Ashani Shanket, Protidwandi, or any Mrinal Sen' s or Rittik Ghatak film which haunt us.
