Recently, I got a question from mark, who's 42 years old, and is curious what I do for recovery.
I'm 38, a little bit younger than Mark, but right in that range where recovery is even more important as we age.
Because of that, today I wanted to show you guys what I do to recover on a semi-daily basis.
The stuff that I show you in this video is geared more towards the days where I am rolling BJJ. If I was lifting, then some of the things I do in this video would be a little bit different.
Anyways, I jump into a few ideas on recovery like Ice baths, stretching, foam rolling, massage gun usage, supplements, sleep, etc. that I find to be useful for my recovery and longevity as an aging grappler.
Hopefully a few of these ideas can be useful for you.

It's odd because at no point did Chewy mention I'm supposed to be pounding Bourbon. Curious, almost like I'm doing it wrong.

52 here. no-stripe purple. Best recovery is to train lighter and longer and don't leave it on the mat. No tap - death matches are for 20 year old white belts. Just now coming back from 6-7 months off and I'm WAY out of shape and my T levels are in the basement. I've forgotten 2/3 of what I know. I'm even emotionally on the verge of quitting - which I deduced to be from vanity of getting my ass kicked by lower belts. If I went in and hammered like I did 2-3 years ago (in my late 40s) I'd get injured every other week. Those birthdays going into your 50s will be rough. Swallowing pride at this stage of the game is like swallowing a 20 pound dumb bell, but my rolling style at this stage is to go and roll and let it happen while expending 20% effort. If I can't use technique to counter- let the other guy have the tap (give him the gym trophy for beating up the old guy). You have to just not care about how you are vs your gym mates. Some of them are a-holes - choose your partners accordingly. In fact I'm trying to work into the habit of wearing myself to zero energy in a second work out prior class so I have minimal strength reserves going into class (also because I'm fat and out of shape and want to lose about 30 pounds to be in "fighting" shape again).

Chewie I just want to say I've watched your channel for a year or so now and this has been the most helpful video yet!! The stretch you do with the massage roller at 04:00 is a life saver, I've had back pain from tight shoulders since starting Jiu Jitsu, and I tried it after class today and it's the first time my back hasn't hurt after training!! Thank you so much!

I'm 52 but after my time in the Army, my equivalent age is 138. Started running again 4 years ago and going to the gym. Just started BJJ a month ago and I'm hooked. My go-to things for recovery are: inversion table- back pain gone with 4 minutes a day use. CBD, both as a supplement and as an ointment, which works better than any freeze spray or Tiger Balm or whatever. For more serious pains and problems I see a very good acupuncturist who has alleviated crippling pain for me several times.

Protect your ribs with frames/trex arms when someone is passing your guard, alot of the time your ribs are getting injured from people falling down into your side control. Also when you fall onto your ribs, stop letting the impact hit your ribs and brace with your arms etc
@drjimjam1112

Grab your ribs over your diaphragm with your hands and pull them out laterally as far as you can. Do this exercise several times a day. Rib cages seem to stiffen and so loose flexibility as we age and this seems to lead to injuries in BJJ. Increasing flexibility is a good way to minimize injury.

Rest and when you feel better, keep training. I started at 49 yrs old and had multiple rib injuries in the first 6 months. I have had zero in the last year. My body was just not used to the impact and pressure. Also, I got better at defense and don't find myself getting smashed as badly as I did early on.

BJJ is hard on the neck and trap area so yeah it's pretty common. Just make sure you're stretching it out and not overtraining.

53 y/o lump of broken meat, here. After 90% of my training sessions, I miss dinner and I'm home just in time to squeeze in 8 hours of sleep. I'm OK with not eating a meal, but I've wondered if I should use some kind of "recovery drink." Any sleep advice would be incredible. Thanks, Chewy.

From one 53 year old to another 😏 I use a protein shake with Creatine, banana, some seeds and nut milk right after a hard rolling session. It changed my life. I still eat after but if not that’s the closest in my humble opinion. Hope it helps
