asimplyfab.life/ An interesting question from a viewer - shout out to you Davy - wanting to know if a Defender is a good idea as a daily driver. We subject our toaster to the test!
LAND ROVER ACTIVITY BOOK: asimplyfab.life/book-life-is-...
Blog: asimplyfab.life/12-best-thing...
From our own experience running our Defenders as an ONLY driver, I can say - go for it! We haven't had any significant troubles during the past ten years (or so) other than being stranded once in Croatia and a couple of repairs and replacements that do not seem overly dramatic considering the age of the vehicle - and what they are put through during their hardworking lives...
We haven't really thought about another car in the garage - and then using the Defender only on certain occasions like weekends away, club meets or holidays... One vehicle is all you really need right?
Results may vary (as with any second-hand car of a certain age...) - so share your experiences with your Defender. Will you tell someone NOT to go there at ALL? Or enjoy this characterful vehicle while we still can!
Thanks for watching!

Although I have a Skoda Yeti,which is supposed to be my daily driver,I go out,do whatever I need with it and return home. and nobody talks to me about it when i stop..I spend 5 minutes at the filling station.I love the vehicle.It is quiet and efficient is very quick and spirited like a puppy ,easy to drive and economical. I also have an ex-Forces Snatch Land-Rover which is not as economical ,diabolically noisy,not as comfortable .It has a full camoufaged coat ,weighs 3.6 tonnes, bomb-proof Kevlar body.and bullet -proof glass,It survived service in Northern Ireland and Afghanistan undamaged.I often spend from 30 minutes to an hour at the filling station whilst people chat to me about it .If I go to do an errand which should only take me 2 or 3 miles ,I take an extended trip of an hour or 10 miles,it is slow and as relaxed as a rhinocerous taking things easy.A Defender makes every trip an adventure,nuff said.

I daily drive my 300tdi 110 here in Australia. She's just getting warmed up with 417000km on the clock. Still runs smooth, and turns heads everywhere she goes! Doesn't matter if it's 42degrees outside, covered in sweat and I've got whiffy pits, I still look back at the bus when I park it.

We daily our Defender Puma 110 The kids love it as do we; being so noisy the kids fall asleep immediately; no worries to let them eat and drink in the car as well. I like it because it is class-less You can be a “poor” farmer or a posh businessman; nobody will judge you being at the wheel The only thing I hate to hear: oh you have a nice jeep... very nice video, fun to watch :-) Best regards from Italy

Used my TD5 prepared for expeditions for years as daily driver and loved it. It's great in city traffic since all other drivers are afraid of metal bumpers and size. Great visibility on intersections and also i don't worry about parking dents. Right now i have 2yrs old mx5 and keep it outside of my garage because defender needs to stay in warm and cosy place, even during winter. You also forgot about one thing, DIY, there is always something to improve, change, etc. And I must say, I love it !

Great video, and nice to see such enthusiasm. We've owned a Puma in the UK for 5yrs - an ex western power utility vehicle. It's a hardtop and had only 2 seats - we've now added a second row of seats (3rd row seats from a discovery) and replaced the roll up aluminium shutters with marine perspex windows. It's a beast!

Sadly we plan to sell it soon - most likely exchanging for a more dull work van/camper van - it's been a joy to do up starting as an industrial looking machine with metal shelves in the back to something more family friendly & a little more upmarket but not much. It's a 'joy' to drive.

My Defender has been my daily drive for years. Even better now though, I’m working from home because of COVID19 so the only place it goes is the supermarket and on expedition to my woodland (which is permitted) which is what I bought it for in the first place! Less mileage on the clock, tyres and everything else lasts longer. Win!

There's a paradox here. I have many friends with Cruisers and they break down too. My son-in-law's Prado just snapped a chassis. But... they'll still lament a Landy's reliability. I've owned Series I through III, a Td5 and now an old (07) Puma 110 over 45 years and I can count on one hand the number of major break-downs. It's the roads, man, not the vehicle. Treat them right and they'll reciprocate.
@ASimplyFabLife
@ASimplyFabLife 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree (nice carpool btw). I think the main people complaining are the newcomers that treat them as if they are tanks, so abuse them beyond reasonable limits and then are surprised that it lets them down. We have been on the road for six months now and all good, despite old Dakota having had a hard time of things in a previous life as an expedition vehicle. But well maintained... This reminds me of our baptism into offroading/winching competition with our old 90 (with a 200tdi). We were in Poland as one of only two Landys amongst a dozen Patrols. Those Nissans were revved to within an inch of their lives (I'm sure I saw tappets coming through the bonnet) and it was full speed ahead everywhere, while we tiptoed around. On day two, of the 18 entries, only 8 were still there at the start line. Despite me having parked the old girl on its side in a metre of water and flooding the engine with nice, brown, icy water we managed to get her going again and finished the competition (we didn't win, but we were there at the end...). Also, most entrants into Croatia Trophy are Landys (in some form of build...). So, theory and practice don't always line up

Good video and I agree with most of it. I daily drive a 2014 110 Puma that Ive had from new and it’s my only car, it’s never let me down. It’s fast enough for me on the road, powerful enough off the road and it tows well too. Yes there are faster more comfortable cars out there (my XS full leather seats are pretty comfy though), but the fast sporty cars are only good on the road and I like to explore off the beaten and metalled track. Great car, with character and people chat to you about it especially other Lanny owners.

I use my TD5 90 as a daily driver for work and for fun at the weekend. To definitely useable, but you’re aware of some Of the discomforts a defender has when using is daily. A re map and uprated suspension has definitely made It more comfortable to drive day in day out.

Had 2 Range Rover classic 4.2 LWB in the early 2000's and I put a about a 100k miles between the both of them in a few short years and I loved every minute of it. Went several years without a Land Rover and last December 2020 I purchased an LR90 19 88 and have been daily driving it since the day I bought it .....4500 miles so far and I absolutely love it. I did upgrade the doors to puma doors and fixed up the interior and the car did have a 300 tdi/ R380 manual gearbox already installed when I purchased it and it drives great, stops great, and it's just a great way to feel the road. Some sound and heat insulation is a must for comfort in the South Florida Sun Summer... which lasts 9 months!

I have had a 2013 TDCi DCPU since new. Bought it when I was living in Malaysia and it saw lots of tropical jungle. Great family adventures. Shipped it home with us to Australia when it was nearly 4yrs old. It’s been our camping escape machine here too for the last nearly 5yrs. As well as off-road adventure machine, throughout its 9yrs, it has also served as my daily driver in the cities we lived in (Kuala Lumpur and Sydney). Loved parking it in the Executive Leadership reserved parking at the office, alongside the BMWs and Audi’s of the other directors. In all its 9yrs it has never let me down. Sure I proactively updated and replaced some bits (3x diff centres to ATBs, HD drive flanges, shaft linking g’box to t’fer case, inter cooler and hoses and a tune) and kept the servicing done replacing bits as they wear. Just sensible stuff really. Love the vehicle, hope to drive it til am too old to have a licence and pass it to my pre-teen son in due course. Definitely a good daily driver!

@NM-si7ku 3 жыл бұрын
@@bertspuma8705 are you adding 9 to 2013 to get 2022? 🍻. I bought the beastie in 2013, ie owned and drove it through much of 2013 and all of 14, 15....20 and through ‘21 to date. Which represent 9 discrete years, count ‘em. Admittedly didn’t own it for all calendar year 2013, and 2021 has a few more months to run. Wasn’t shooting for a degree of accuracy in the math down to the day/week or even month. Hence “almost 4yo” when we moved back to Oz and “almost 5yrs” since we have been back in Oz may be too much a stretch or rounding error. 😁 To give a greater degree of precision, replace the summary line with: “In it’s almost 8.37214631547 years being used as a jungle/bush camper and daily driver - it has never let me down. 🥃 cheers! 😄

From experience, my galvanized bumper Ninety was best for removing beer bottle caps and my later 200 TDI was well matched for racing 2CVs on the motorway . All versions ideal for ripping clothing on exit and damage-free low-speed impacts with other people's crumple zones . And yes I wish I'd acquired my grandfather`s asbestos and nichrome wire manual toaster.

I've had my '07 puma 110 for a year now and my dad's had his '00 90 td5 since about 2007. He has almost 550,000km on his now. How big you are is a key factor. If you are taller than 6ft or have broad shoulders you will struggle on long trips. But there are hacks like armrest and seat rail extenders.
@ASimplyFabLife
@ASimplyFabLife 2 жыл бұрын
True dat👍. A Puma pickup/bakkie single cab is the worst! However, being 6'2, our 110 has the bulkhead cut down about halfway and the seat goes back just enough (without extra rails) to be comfortable enough for about seven or eight hours (350 km 😅😂). I would still love to know how tall were the brothers Wilkes 😉

Hi Guys, I agree completely and especially what your wife said not liking modern cars, boring same as same as, i have a 2009 puma xs 90 all Black 7 years now only problem needed new clutch year after buying that's it. before that was 2010 Range Rover sport supercharged for 5 years and no comparison Defender is way better for fun, looks and everything and i have had Shoguns and many other vehicles over last 40 years. one thing only more boot space in the 110 but i prefer looks of the 90.

Nice😎! As I may have mentioned before elsewhere - if the (Puma) motor/gearbox is good enough to hold up to a UPS Transit driver then there really isn't much of an argument on reliability is there?💪 You ran an RRS as well? Agreed no comparison but still has some cool factor (that shape) and they seem to be reliable too🤔. Only things I found less appealing were the aesthetics of the massive girder-like rear axle arrangement on show, and it was a fair bit tighter inside than its brother RR... Was a tad faster than a Def...

I had a discovery for the last few years and it recently died of rust and rotten chassis, it’s not worth putting in the money to get it fixed so I decided to buy something really nice and classy, £36k later and I bought a Mercedes GLC 250 AMG line, I had it for 3 weeks until I got bored of it, I was missing my discovery but the newer ones just loose too much money and they have a lot of electronic gremlins, so I’ve just traded my mercedes in for a 2014 defender 90 XS 2.2! It’s noisy and doesn’t drive as smooth as the merc but it’s got character and I just know I won’t get bored with it, bring on the snow 😎

Imported a 200tdi 110 back in 2015 from alsace france to southern US. Although in beginning it required alot, I was able to be my own mechanic, have rebuilt my engine, turbo and bosch injection pump myself. Yes, it does require more maintenence and care than my 2020 toyota forerunner, but the defender is 10 times more satifying to drive, a d here in the US gets alot of attention on the road. Daily driver? Because our interestate highways, folks drive 75-80 mph, defender is slow. On country roads and offroad, the defender is perfect.
