This was so helpful, thank you. I'm always struggling to make (and stick to) a simple schedule without starting to add in a million other subjects that sound fun to try!

This was the single most helpful homeschool scheduling video I have seen and I have been looking into this topic for a while. It’s clear, practical, and it makes sense to my brain. I am going to plug and play with the curriculum we’re working with and then use your flow as the model. Thank you so much!

So glad it was helpful! This is the practical approach that makes sense to me--I don't make huge changes to our schedule, I just roll with it and adapt as needed to the curriculums and subjects we're doing at the time.

With these busy guys, it really helps to know what's coming next and stick to a regular routine. Including Spanish throughout the day adds extra challenge for sure, but for our family is worth it.

We don’t do readings over meals but as my teenagers don’t do early starts they often eat their breakfast during readings!!! The easier readings we wait till my older kids have ate so they can read them!!! It brings them in!!! We went thru our German too fast and now we are just working on the words they need extra practice for!!! I didn’t mind doing it that way as we are still working on the words!!! All my kids listen to German songs but I encourage them to sing along!!! My younger kids don’t have their own checklists yet!!! My 8 year old is asking for one!!! I’m working with her to teach her how to plan and check off. I know it’s a life skill!!! Our morning virtues take at least 6 weeks if not longer!!! My older kids use the bible readings tho!!! We often go deeper into it!!!

This was great, thanks! I hope you were serious about asking questions... 😅 --When do you circle back to independent work that needs to be corrected? I have a third and first grader (plus littles), and it's especially hard when the oldest has finished her independent work and switched into "play mode," and I have to be like, "Aaaaactually, come on back over, we need to look at several of these math problems together..." --How long does the whole "Lunch" reading block take? Do you do all of that every day? I feel like I can't get through more than one subject during that time! --When you read during meals, when you find time eat yourself?
@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll 3 ай бұрын
-With my oldest, I correct as he goes. I put all the schoolbooks on the table to begin the day, and as each one is completed, I put it back on the shelf so that the table gradually clears off. Much of the time, since he's just doing 1st grade work, the correction is very quick, so he leaves his books open on the table as he finishes and while my younger son is working on an activity, I'll quickly look through his math, Explode the Code, cursive, and if anything needs to be re-done I'll hand it back. With higher grades, checking can get a little bit more time consuming. For example, with my sisters, my mom will typically have a daily afternoon checking session with each one, and they will sit down together to go through all the work of the day and discuss anything as needed. - For the "Lunch" block, I tend to do short sessions, because with these sorts of topics, I find it more effective to do short amounts of learning each day but stay on the same topic for a while--helps the ideas stick. So with the morning menu, for example, we're learning about the same hymn, poem, composer, etc for 6 school weeks, so I don't feel like I need to spend a long time on the content each day, because over 6 weeks, a little bit of time daily will really add up. Science -- approx 20 minutes. "Morning Menu" (hymn, poetry, artist or composer) - approx 15 minutes History or Geography - approx 25 minutes. Moving through shorter lessons in a variety of subjects seems to hold their attention better than trying to do a lot of work in just one subject. If there's ever something that will take extra time for some reason, i.e. a more involved Science experiment, I'll usually push that off into the afternoon. - They listen so well during meals...that's why I like to read during them. I either eat my breakfast before they wake up or else after. I'm normally a pretty early riser, but the whole time I was pregnant and during the newborn months, I've usually eaten breakfast after, while they have some playtime in between breakfast and sitting down. Nowadays that I'm feeling more rested I'm eating before they get up more frequently. Lately, the "lunch" session has been usually happening before lunch, and we end and go straight to lunch, but if I read during lunch, then I'll just eat after while they play.

I’m finding it hard to homeschool Kindergarten and Second grade. Not sure if you have a video about it but do you take turns? And what do they do while they wait? Appreciate any advice :)
@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll 3 ай бұрын
They don't really take turns--that's what I initially envisioned, working with one while the other played alone. However, they quickly realized that if they did their schoolwork at the same time, they have more time to play together...so mostly we're doing the table schoolwork all at the same time. I talked about it a little bit in this video how I mentally keep track of how certain books are more independent for my older son, so I will have him working on the work he can do more independently while I'm working with my younger son, and then I'll have my younger son working on something that will take him a little while (i.e. putting number flashcards in order) while I work with my older son, plus, the younger finishes first since he has less work, so I know that I can do the work with my older son that requires me toward the end. You can see this in action a little bit in a "day in the life" vlog here. This one is from a few months ago, I'll have a new one coming later this week:

I'm going to have a K and 2nd grader this upcoming year, and I'm nervous about this, too. It's already a little difficult with my 1st grader trying to focus while my other plays. I'm going to try to have one do Mystery Science videos or Khan Academy with headphones while the other does math and Lang arts.

@LittleJourneys2 3 ай бұрын
@@alenatorres7071 yes! My second grader always says but they distract me or why does she get to do something fun and I don’t. We just started doing excuses exposed and I try to remind him if he is making an excuse he gives me a side eye but goes back to doing his work. But it’s the constant reminding that makes me want to try teaching at the same time. Good luck:)

@@LittleJourneys2 The "Why does he/she get to play?" has definitely been a question that happens here because the younger one does schoolwork for a shorter time than the older one. It's a great opportunity to explain the 'facts of life'--a younger child has less responsibility than an older one. When you were 4 years old, you also did less schoolwork than you do now. So now, because I have thoroughly explained the concept, if the "why?' question gets asked again, I ask him back, "tell me why? Why does your younger brother have less schoolwork than you do?" And he can answer his own question. Also, yes, claiming distraction is a great opportunity to discuss excuses. When other things are going on, you have a choice: a choice to get distracted or a choice to focus on your work. Each choice leads to different results. Which choice will you make?

@@45754 Most of Gentle + Classical curriculum is aimed at covering the Bible/Literature/"Riches"/Nature, so the reading level of the child doesn't really matter all that much, because this is mostly content that would be read aloud to the child, and memory work. You might want to look into Gentle + Classical Primer if your children are around Kindergarten age, or Gentle + Classical Sequence 1 if they are 1st grade and above. It is age-adaptable, but the books schedules in Sequence 1 are much longer and more challenging than those in G+C Primer.
