I got both First Language Lessons and writing with ease. If I have a gifted learner could this work at a younger age? He’s 5.5 and turning 6 next January. I know this is an older video 😂 If my son is appears to be very advanced in language arts would this be a good fit to start now? He loves structure and wants to learn to write.

Yes--if he can do copywork, he can start this. I will say that my own preference is more of a DIY approach using some of these same skills, but it might be helpful to have this resource to get you started in the habit. Having used the WWE Level 1 with other students, I find it kind of difficult/frustrating to be reading aloud short passages from a book that we aren't actually reading because then I ended up doing a lot of explaining of the rest of the story to give context.

Very nice! It is very true that every mode of education has examples of kids who didn't get what they needed out of it. And it is our responsibility to make sure our homeschooled kids get the best we can, whether or not they end up great at sports ;)

Wow! Your mom always manages to impart some new wisdom on me every time she comes on the show. (Don't worry, I love listening to you too Rachel 😉). Her insight into it being the child's choice to swallow is going to ruminate in my head as I prepare to start my 5th year of homeschool in a few weeks.

haha--I will never attempt to compete with my mama--she deserves all the appreciation she gets. And yes, recognizing that the child actually plays a significant role in their own education is an idea that heavily impacts the way we see the education journey. There are two major players--teacher bears a large part of the responsibility, but so does the student.

I love this video. An n of 1 does not make a case. Turns out, every one of us has strengths and weaknesses. We are called to be faithful in stewarding what we’ve been given (applies to both the parents and students). Of course that will lead to different outcomes. It isn’t a judgment or validation of our educational methods alone. I wish you two were part of my in person village. I could use this kind of real talk in my life more often:)

It's the reality that many just don't have access to practical encouragement in this life choice "in person"--so this is one of the benefits of the internet. :) And yes, the educational method cannot fully explain the outcome--because even the exact same method and tools will have different outcomes in different individuals. This doesn't excuse us from seeking out effective methods, but it's a more realistic understanding of how education works. It's not as linear as some people think.

Pubic school fails kids as well!!! I think homeschooling gives opportunities for better teaching!!! I think ur mum has some awesome advice!!! I agree that kids have responsibilities to learn especially when they hit the teenage yrs!!! I’m seeing it with book studies where I read the actors where awesome and my teenage son told me he read the book!!! I don’t like blanket statements!!!

My four-year-old loves numbers and is at first grade level with math but his writing isn't there. Would you suggest doing it with him but skipping the workbook or doing the workbook verbally? Thanks!

I wouldn't fully skip the workbook--there really isn't a lot of writing in this compared to other 1st grade programs. Some of the workbook pages are drawing lines to match or coloring. I would do it verbally with you scribing his answers if he's not up for writing numbers yet and maybe just gradually let him write a number or two as his skills grow.

I went through my education in public schools in California with a huge graduating class, and saw so many students who could not read, write, or do math well. Blanket statements should not be made, as there are all types of homeschooling situations. Homeschooling is growing rapidly the last several years. I feel fostering a love of learning is truly the most important aspect in homeschooling! Thank you for posting this one!😊❤

Yes--there truly is no "blanket" experience. It's true, we homeschoolers wonder why folks never bring up all the traditionally-schooled students who aren't receiving a good education at the same time that they bring up the homeschooled students who didn't receive a good education...I'd say education is seriously lacking for many, many kids in many situations--and that's why I work to do something about that, for my own kids and for the students I've had over the years.

would you say the transition of the primers (a,b,c) to 1 is easy? doing the primers with my 5 year old but worried it’ll be a jump? Or would you recommend pairing ETC with another program for reading/LA? We haven’t really started any other phonic or LA programs yet.

I feel like there IS a bit of a jump from A,B,C to 1 -- but it tends to feel the same with any program that moves from alphabet mastery to okay, now it's time to read. It is a natural "jump" in skills and tends to take extra time in the transition from knowing the sounds of letters to now successfully blending them to make words. In my own homeschool, I like to use ETC more for independent work/review vs. teaching a concept for the first time, but some do successfully use it for introducing phonics concepts, but if used that way, you will probably need to add extra practice with those concepts as you go (and I hear that the ETC teacher's guide offers some of that).

There are core books as well as booklists for each magazine, as pictured in the Teacher Guide, but MOST of the history and religion content is in the On Mission articles themselves.

I'm much older but like kid books - around 2000 I went with a new friend to her sister-in-law's house and her kids were in K and 1st grade seems like - maybe 1st and 2nd - and they were big-time into Junie B Jones. I picked some up and was reading and was pretty shocked at what that kid got away with - I'd been too afraid to even think some of htat stuff LOL! I see the appeal to a kid though- and I read a lot as an adult that I don't agree with for myself but enjoy reading but still not sure I'd want to buy them for a kid

We are going to use it this year as a resource and guide this year, which I highly recommend, since it is so reasonably priced. The Bible focus, the Messner books (which we own already, brilliant) and the Elephant and Piggie social emotional learning are what we are most excited about and I’m pretty sure my almost five and almost three year old will be able to do most of those subjects together with some extensions for my rising gifted kindergardener. Rachel, you really should make a 10 second recorded blurb and stick it in every video mentioning your homeschool curriculums. Happy to give you a review once we get started (it may be from my husband we tag team hormschool and working from home different hours)!

And that's a good idea with coming up with a concise clip to stick into other videos--all too often I hear from followers who say they never realized that I write curriculum, and then I realize that my promotion/advertising skills are in need of sharpening. Not much offical class work going on, but lots of sports and outside time! Next up is family reunions and trips. I have been listening to Brandon Sanderson a lot lately. One of the funniest parts to me is trying to listen to 55 hours of book in the 3 weeks I can have it borrowed. 😂😂😅

Sounds like great summer plans! Borrowing books from the library and finishing them in the allotted time given the requirements of mom-life is indeed a challenge! I have not yet attempted audiobooks (always feel like I need my ears available to hear baby cries, etc.) but I can borrow ebooks through Libby and the time limit can be rough on those long ones.

Are you doing this next year with your boys? I know its says 1-6th grade (Erin says 2-4th may be th sweet spot) But can it be scafolded for younder students?

I have not yet firmed up my plans for the next school year after this one--ha! I think her estimate of 2nd-4th is the sweet spot is accurate. I am currently doing Sequence 1 with my oldest, and that schedules you to use 3 On Mission magazines, so exploring 3 countries slowly over the course of a year. We're currently using the Vietnam issue (which is not scheduled in this "Around the World" year). My somewhat-advanced 1st grader is remembering and comprehending a great deal of the content (I was drawing a great big timeline of Vietnam's history a couple weeks ago to help him wrap his mind around the major events), but my 4 year old is mostly just dancing around the room and playing with Hotwheels. Younger students will find some aspects interesting--coloring pages, animals, handicrafts, and the picture books, but a lot of the history, cultural information, geography is likely going to go over the head of a typical preschool/kindergartener.

we are using the kindergarten curriculum with various ages not just kindergarten. we will just add in more things that fit the themes. we are going to learn about the lighthouse of alexandria for the lighthouse week

I’ve had my fair share of battles on online homeschooling communities because of my little advanced learner. At age 4 , he finished an entire Kindergarten curriculum of math, science, social studies, and language arts and He also completed their first grade math that same year. He’s looking at starting his Kindergarten year in 2nd grade math and first grade in his other subjects. It is hypocritical for all these moms to say that the beauty of homeschooling is to be able to work at the child’s pace, but the minute a child’s pace is advanced, it is no longer welcome. I thought we were homeschooling so that we could work at our kids pace and not try to follow generalizations, like in public school, that kids should start reading around age 7 etc. I notice that the moment i started mentioning that it could be argued that these types of kids fall into a special needs category of their own, due to all the accommodations and unique adjustments to their education needed, plus their asynchronous development which is a challenge especially with the younger learners, it stops them from being rude. Im guessing no one likes to be seen as being insensitive towards kids who fall into a special needs category and well that is kind of what they are doing. People hear the words gifted and advanced, and I feel it brings their own insecurities about school up and so they try to put down students such as these. Oh yes, it never occurred to me that homeschool mom bullying was a major thing. Oh and yes, they try to bring up “scientifically “ proven things mentioning things like their bones arent developed yet etc. To that Ive also found that a response along the lines of well it too has been scientifically proven that when it comes to gifted learners, it actually causes more harm to hold back a child based on age alone when they are clearly ready for more. Truth is Gifted learners have unique needs and science proves those too.

Yes, homeschool mom bullying is indeed a thing and I'm sorry you have had to face it. The reality is that many people do not understand the needs of gifted learners when they haven't experienced teaching them--I have a playlist of the videos I've made related to gifted homeschooling. I know it's a very misunderstood experience, and I know that this fast "pace" isn't well understood when we should be embracing a child's natural learning pace. You're doing the right thing.

And yes, I was like...well, I didn't know that was a think snakes did around here but now I guess I have something else to watch out for at the park...(once a monkey ran up and stole a toy truck away from my son when he was 3....he still remember that park incident...there are a few things that tend to stick in your memory...)

I know that is something you would love to do yourself, but this thought came to my mind that maybe a person who has used the resources you have created could possibly help you tell others about them.

I always hope to encourage and motivate others--yes, these are very "full" workdays...but what an amazing job we have, the job of raising and educating our children. I generally recommend Llamitas for kids who are starting from a point of already understanding a fair amount of Spanish.

I have a pre-K son (learning to read) and a 1st grader next year. Both of us parents incorporate Spanish into our conversations mostly with each other as we both learned Spanish as a second language. So I’m trying to figure out where to start- do I start with the first level, that’s my guess…

@@annam7927 I would look at the videos and/or free samples of the curriculum to decide. You don't necessarily have to start with Level 1 with an older child, but Level 2 is significantly more challenging than the first level.

I just read the first three books in the Timeless series by Gabrielle Meyer. They are Christian, historical fiction, romance with time travel. You think those things couldn’t possibly all work together, but they do. The series is addictive. 😂

I love this review! Super thorough. Curious: I think I remember Erin saying G and C hired experienced writers to help develop curriculum in a past video. I know you are super busy writing curriculum of your own, but so curious if you have ever contributed to G and C or any other curriculum…it would actually make me more interested. We are finishing up our sports year of travelling!!! My kids are active as well!!! It sounds like your son knows enough letter sounds to read!!! Our reading curriculum is has shorter fluency sheets!!! At home we have tree snakes that drop out of trees if they decide they want to and I don’t appreciate it as they are dangerous!!! I’ve done snake training in our homeschool!!!

That was definitely a first for me, seeing a snake fall out of a tree! And yes, we have also done some "snake training" with our kids because we have had a number of friends who have woken up to find a venomous snake in their home.

Those fluency pages look SOOO long and brutal for a child!😳 Even as an adult just looking at it shuts my brain down.🤣 What exactly is their purpose? Is it just review of the words they have already learned or is it practicing new words they have never seen? This program looks good but those fluency pages look like they would cause a lot of tears and frustration for my child and me.

My daughter did not like the fluency sheets at all. We used AAR one year (level 2) and never used it again. Thankfully I was able to sell it.

I used AAR 1 and 2 and never used the fluency pages with my oldest--the curriculum can definitely be completed without using them at all. The goal is just practice and getting more confident with words--usually the words on the page are examples of the phonics concept being taught or they are words in the story that the child is getting ready to read, so they are additional chances to practice the concept they are working on mastering. My son who is just starting to read is a little bit on the young side, so since I'm trying to take our time and give him lots of chances to practice. It's been easy enough to have him read the words on the practice pages here at the beginning. I doubt I will use all of them. They do offer suggestions to make it "fun" in the curriculum--different and more active ways to practice words in games and activities.

@@SevenInAll it is a good program, but too expensive for us when it didn’t last a whole year. My daughter also didn’t like the daily games. We found a less expensive program that had her reading between a 3rd and 4th grade level by the end of 2nd grade. It worked so well I switched all of my children over and they are all reading so much better. I’m glad AAR works well for you and for so many other families!

@@beachgurl788 I have 7 kids and we use Christian Light Education for Reading, Math, and Language Arts. We started using it last year and can’t wait to use it again this year. It’s thorough and they can work independently. It’s also very affordable.

haha, that is true, you can't do it all! But there are a lot of years in a homeschool journey....homeschool long enough and you can do quite a bit. :)

I love that it’s includes a lot thru geography!!! We tried the passports for on mission but we didn’t like it!!! We found on mission takes us more than 3 weeks per issue!!! I bought a morning virtue issue and used a book selection guide but bought another book on Eric Liddell!!! I don’t love grids especially now we travel school as we are needing to be more flexible!!! I can’t reach for a few days every other week at the moment!!! We love on mission Flashcards!!!

I don't tend to do pretend passports because it doesn't feel very "fun" when we already have to do all the paperwork for actual passports and visas. But for kids who don't have an international lifestyle it's probably more fun!
