Only recently added a Profilux 4 controller along with a PH probe and it was quite an eye opener to see the PH swing throughout the day. Previously I tested at the same time per day so I was never aware of it. Generally between 8.25 and 8.1 in case anyone else is wondering. Nowhere near an expert and I have no acropora in the tank but this video came at a good time as I was wondering if I needed to make it more stable so thank you ReefMan.

I was surprised too when I first added my controller!

I’ve been very aware of the swings in pH and temp, since this is something I pay close attention to - but what was great to hear is that these swings are most probably beneficial to coral resilience. I guess it’s sort of like when young children start developing stronger immune systems. So my takeaway, is to be less concerned with the minor ups and downs because they’re actually normal! Thanks for this! 👍🏻👍🏻

Yeah for sure. It's also up to a certain point as well, hopefully people won't take this to mean that huge swings are ok. The paper does also state that corals bleach with just a little higher temperature..

Yes - definitely a matter of degree of change, also because large swings cause other problems in water chemistry. But the school of thought that says pH should always be between 8 and 8.3 isn’t necessarily something we should be aiming for, because we can turn ourselves inside out trying to stay above 8 and for most of us, it just will never happen. But that doesn’t mean we won’t have very successful reef tanks provided we are relatively stable with temp and pH.🤔

I always wondered if the swings in pH and temp that I see were happening in the wild. Pretty neat to see a paper with data that shows that it's normal - and even predictable based on depth. Hope you enjoyed!

Yes, I agree with that. The ocean is not error at all about the swings of ph and temp. There're purpose of it Might be the correlation is about regulating ph inside the body of coral and fish. That makes them get high appetite and capabilty to digest food

Yeah, could be. I haven't seen papers on that sort of thing yet. Could be that no one really knows for sure. That's the great thing about science - we learn one thing and it opens 100 new questions to explore

@@ReefMan That's true. A week ago, I've been feed my corals quite much. And the day later, some of coral was damage. The tissue was open half like a open wound. Suddenly I think, that the coral has failure to digest a food. And I remember that digesting process needs low ph in stomach. And then, since last week until now I put my skimmer off at night. Even my return pump for several days at night. And I feel.... my corals looks better, at every morning. More flowering. You can try as well. I have over 20 LPS, 2 SPS, several softie and NPS. 8 dkh, 400ppm Ca, 1300 ppm Mg. 1025-26. 28 C.

Great thing to know because I am sure I have swings daily.

As we know. Digesting food needs low ph or acid in the stomach

Great vid would have been helpful if you have over typed the ph range and not just speck about them like you did for the temp had to listen a few time to take it in

Ah, good point. Sorry about that! I went through it a few times to try to ensure the stats were easy to understand, but I missed that one. I'm glad you liked the video otherwise though!

Is a 2F swing up and down ok for a reef tank then?
@ReefMan
@ReefMan 3 жыл бұрын
I think realistically it is. Stability is always better, but it's hard to keep temperature rock solid..

@@ReefMan thank you for the reply. My tank is on a controller however it would fluctuate every hour if i kept it at 77-78. But if i let my heater at 77 and my fan at 79...it would fluxtuate throughout the day. Corals would be resiliant if the temp fluctuates, in case heater fails right? Than keeping it steady?

I've kept Acropora down to around 74F. I wouldn't drop the temperature suddenly, but a slight swing should be fine. My tank swings about one degree. I use a chiller to keep it around 77.5-78.5 (it turns on at 78.5)

I can keep my tank steady at 78 all day long but my fan will be kicking on and off constantly
