No joke the first time I went to Mexico was in spring 2012, when we lande we were greeted by advertisements of the Mayan calendar countdown, down to the seconds till doomsday. It really messed my 13 year old brain up 😂

@1Dudelove The year 2000 was a bit different. A lot of people were working hard (for up to 15 years) to make sure that nothing would happen. The world ending was maybe exaggerated but it could have been a lot of cleanup work

Personal Story: When this was happening I was in high school. When we got released there was about 20 believers outside of school with billboards saying the rapture was near. We talked to one guy there and he told us that he sold his house and quit his job to be free of his possessions. His wife and 2 kids were there with him.

In life no one is an enemy nor a friend but someone who wants his own skin to be undamaged. Exept a few but they are quite rare. Also he sould not have pushed this on others, like what then If the bible tells you to not care of worldly posessions, its about the thought of not caring about it the most but something more like your family and others, cause when you wish to go to heaven and thinking selling your house is a pass is like the old church that said pay money so you get to heaven, and a guy with a black beanie who wrote 93 or so reasons why its bullshit.

Thing is, the people believing this are not just stupid, they're hypocrits. *Selling* belongings before the rapture? Instead of giving them away for free because you don't need them where you're going? They never fully believed. They just wanted something good to happen, not try to earn that good happening. Numbers in the Bible have many different meanings, but there is no correlation with the numbers Harold used as far as I know. For example, the number representing "completeness" and "heaven" is actually seven, not 10 or 17. Not sure how many times they're mentioned in the Book of Revelation.

I don't feel bad for him at all. Unlike Camping, he never accepted he was wrong and I read his book - he has like 6 pages of perverse speculation about how awful things will be for people left behind, choking on clouds of poison gas and drowning when all the dams fail. The only reason he was out there in the first place was to rub his rapture in everyone's faces as a last told you so, hecc that guy, he got off easy.

I may not be religious anymore, but I do still fear a higher being. But that doesn't mean someone like me is obligated to push into anyone's business or beliefs. The Bible clearly says that no man shall know the day nor hour of the coming of Christ's return. He will come like a thief in the night, meaning we'll never see it coming and be absolutely surprised when it happens. But it's not just people. The angels don't know. Not even Jesus Christ himself knows when the day will come. Only God the Father knows. If anyone claims to have figured out the day of the apocalypse, something Jesus doesn't even know, then he's either lying, deluded, or REALLY doesn't know scripture.

I'm not a religious man but yeah I read the Bible to some extend and you're right. I wish people that are actually religious (or claim to be it) would actually dedicate some time reading the Bible. The Bible is a bronze age mythology bullshit book written by primitive and superstitious old farts with contradictions and nonsenses like : people living for hundred of years ( life expectancy at the time was 30 to 40 to) , a man who lived in a fish ( Jonas), trumpets that make fortification strong fortifications crumble (Jericho), Being sinner at birth cause some naked dude and chick ate an apple, people walking in the desert for 40 years without dying, talking snake, a talking bush and so on. The follow up prediction when the first date passed by is a classic for these kinds of people. There have been dozens of examples of people predicting the end of the world and then making up a new date when the first one passes by going all the way back to the middle ages. Humans haven't really changed much in the last thousand years.

In Harold camping defense he didn't actually Double Down per se. He had already explained that October 21st was the end of the world before the May 21st date. His initial prediction was that the Rapture would take place on May 21st and then 5 months of tribulation before the world ends on October 21st

It's easy to make fun of them but Internet Historian is right. Those two families and Fitzgerald were genuinely convinced they were gonna die and that there was nothing they could do to stop it. Even though it's kinda funny, I can't help but feel some sympathy for them.

The people are not stupid. They truly believed this. Camping truly believed this. He wanted to help people. They knew the world was ending, but they were wrong. Good lives were ruined. It’s fascinating but more than that it’s... sad. They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions for a reason.
