Of course the act of "thinking" itself is the core of chess, but "seeing him thinking for a moment longer than an intuitive instant" is what the OP was talking about. They’re not just there to watch him play though, they’re there to hang out with him while he works. It would be like if you were a cashier at Walmart or a security guard at the mall and your friends showed up for an hour or two to talk to help pass the time faster. Magnus playing a WFM with a handicap takes as much mental effort for him as a cashier scanning groceries. Streaming for 8 hours a day sounds boring and monotonous so having friends around always helps. People just somehow forget how absurdly good Carlsen is. Like, anyone in this youtube comment section would lose to a blackout drunk Carlsen under these time odds. Botez is obviously not GM level, but she's a perfectly decent chess player - and Carlsen just obliterates her. Squeaking out that little time win is huge. People just don't understand how unreasonably large the gap is from Carlsen to even many other GMs - and certainly anyone who is IM or lower.

What an electrifying game! I'm only six years old and I absolutely love chess, so watching Alexandra finally beat Magnus was super exciting for me! It was like watching a real-life chess adventure. Alexandra's strategy was really smart, especially when she changed her opening to something unexpected, and her quick thinking when the game looked tough was so inspiring. Plus, her reaction on stream was priceless-it's not every day you see someone so passionate! As someone who loves chess, this video was a perfect mix of tension and joy. Keep it up, Alexandra!

"If I think, he is going to think on my time" I love this you can tell how pumped she is. I played Counterstrike on a community server regularly, and a couple days we found out some pro players were in America playing on the server. I had never been so pumped to try and defeat them in a gungame and got very close. One of my friends actually did beat them. For him it was probably one of his best memories of the game ever. I also played a match one time against FMPONE on Santorini. We had our asses whooped, but it was still one of my favorite memories.

And a winning position at that. No matter how many times you see it Magnus is a spectacle. Even she had only 5 seconds to spare, if it were increments of 0.2 seconds I doubt Magnus would lose.

I have seen movies where villains are to op that you have to put all odds against him and still just winning by a very very slim margin. This felt like that.

The trick when someone is down on time like this, especially magnus, is to play moves that they cannot premove against. Because you aren’t going to be magnus in classical chess. You can’t play chess to beat him, you have to play the time. And if he’s premoving, he’s not wasting any time. So what you need to do is simply force him to use his time by not allowing him to premove. And this is something that Alex did really well. If you look at how often Magnus was premoving, watch how little that actually paid off for him. She wasn’t playing how he predicted she might play. Which is the reason she ended up winning even though she was in such a worse position. I don’t know how intentional it was on her part, but she played just weird enough to throw him off and waste his time. Beautiful game

So basically in a 10 games (don't know the exact number) where Magnus had 30 seconds and she had 5 mins, Magnus lost a single game on time (even there he had a huge material advantage and mate was almost there). This is what I call absolute domination.

Of course it is, he's basically the greatest player of all time. He dominates the top 10 players all the time while playing troll openings at every opportunity. For a 2200 to not lose by move 10 is an achievement, winning on time is still a great moment.

i just realized it’s not just the fact it’s a 10x time difference, cuz if magnus had 5 min to 50 min for her, magnus would ALWAYS WIN since 5 min by itself is a lot for magnus. but they had to shrink his absolute time down to 30 sec to make it nearly impossible for magnus to even finish the average game in time simply due to physical constraints on reality lmao
