Ryan writes about stoicism. Cal absolutely embodies it.

Cal is the show here. I'm a big fan of both and have taken many of Cal's premium offerings. Cal is methodical and mathematically optimized vis a vis what he feels like doing/not doing, or is worried about. I really enjoyed this talk, but it seemed like there was a much larger gap in wisdom between the two than expected. Appreciate this content and the insights shared.

I really did that I quit everything, did yoga instructor certification in Thailand and became a yoga instructor. But training and movement always has been my passion, I spent many years at the gym and different yoga studios before. I start my own yoga studio and I need to say that it is business like many others. I still need to manage social media, marketing, phone calls, emails, finances, taxes and many other things, being instructor is like 10% of this. If I want more money I need to do more classes and sometimes it's physically exhausting, also working with groups of people almost daily is draining. So if it's your dream, think twice, because it's not as easy as it seems :)

Very timely... I asked myself, "what exactly makes the grass greener on the other side? Why do I want to go there?" And then figure out how to implement those things in your life/work today...

Reading Cal Newport has totally changed my working (and work-life balance) mindset. I'm reaching benkmarks I could only dream of and my family can also enjoy (?) my presence a bit more. I definetely recommend his work.

18:30 mark, Phone vs. Email discussion: In my experience, phone calls give a one-sided preparation advantage. Phone calls come with real time pressures, instant/time sensitive answers, and not much time to clearly think out one's responses. It's like one person has prepared their ask, pre-overcame your potential objections, while you have a soft idea of what the true nature of the call is. Of course, "you can say no," but after they've essentially cornered you, appealed to your emotions, interest, and such, and have given a well reasoned tactical pitch, it's a big draw of bandwidth to refute said pitch and be the bearer of bad news, "No." That's if you're indeed not interested. Especially when you hear all of the hope and optimism in their voices, 🥺, lol. Email evens the playing field. 😐

What do I want my everyday to look like? That's more important than your job. Autonomy. Live by your terms. We all hate emails. Asynchronous vs synchronous communication systems: synchrony allows for highly effective communication but it's hard to set up. Asynchrony is easy to set up but the communication becomes more complex. Don't give away your time. It might take 50 hours to think about something before giving it form. If somebody asks you what you are thinking about you should be able to answer. Thinking is the hardest and longest part of the writing process. Talent is not enough, it has to be shaped and optimized, distractions must be eliminated. You have to find a way to induce an apprenticeship in what you are doing. There is a lack of training for "knowledge work". You can trade accountabililty for accesability. Face the productivity dragon. Have the diligence to build a skill and then the courage to make the jump.

I find it endlessly entertaining that Ryan makes a living writing about stoicism.. living proof you don’t have to practice what you preach. Life is comedic 😁

Two of my favourite writers: Ryan, I don't just recommend "The Obstacle is the Way", I bought several copies so I have literally been able to put it in the hands of a few people when they've been struggling. Cal, I have been a long-term reader of your work and love seeing your books in my local bookshop and seeing your practical ideas are gaining traction. I enjoyed the section of the interview where you discussed book-blurbs, especially in the context of Cal's endorsement of my latest read, "Think Big" by fellow Corkonian Grace Lordan. She'd make a great guest on either Deep Questions or The Daily Stoic.

I did like the 'lifestyle -centric career planning' idea from Cal. And Ryan's 'what would I like my (default) day to look like'. Definitely lots to think about in this video podcast. Good give& take between Cal and Ryan.

God I could listen to you two all day

I feel so vindicated listening to this. Thank you for giving voice to thoughts/beliefs I vagually had, but couldn't quite pin down. Specifically around the need to read, listen and think before you will be able write somthing coherent. The advice to write early on in your graduate studies was very detrimental to me - I simply couldn't. I felt at the time, I needed first to read and think more - but everyone around me was saying I should be able to write, and I couldn't and I felt like a failure. Although to counter this - I remember whenever our (wonderful!) high-school art teacher caught us talking or daydreaming she would ask why we wern't drawing. If we ever tried to argue that we were "thinking", she would reply "then think with your pencil!". There is a lot of sense in that - drawing really helped work through thoughts and ideas. In the same way - I think writing can help to capture, and organise thoughts; and make conections. It's very good at highlighting when you don't understand something you thought you understood!! But writing somthing that will be read - like a disertation, thesis or paper - I completely agree - you need to have something to write about first. I wish I could go back in time and reasure my younger, freaking-out, struggling self - that I wasn't stupid. I wasn't ready to write, and I was finding it so hard, because it WAS HARD.

Ok, so I did enjoy the interview! I think it could have been smarter for Ryan to not be so candid, but I TOTALY get him. Just like him, for some weird reasons I would prefer 100 emails over one phone conversation! I suspected that my inhibition was due to my fear of " lack of proper English" since it's my second language, but now I think, its definatly a characteristic of "the introvert"! Nobody will guess it bc I am very present, funny and "alive" while meeting someone, or I am forced to go to a party, but it actually drains the energy out of me- unless they are on the same wave lenght, haha. We introverts will rather read a good book than meet a person, so our time is very valuable to us; we are the thinkers not the " people person". BUT, you should definatly keep that a secret if you are a public figure ;). People will have a hard time accepting the fact that your time is more precioys to you than they are. I enjoyed this dialog till you arived at the vaccination issues...ya, like some others noted, I too draw the conclusion that you only like to talk about stoicism. 😄 🤣

WOW!! I had to really listen to this episode a half a dozen times to make sure I understood the concept of Ryan’s thoughts on helping aspiring writers/authors/entrepreneurs etc… Not everyone has the luxury of mentoring under Robert Greene. A lot of folks are putting in the work and turning over every stone to get their message out and get their book out for the world to see. They need that push, they’re looking for advise from Ryan from a fans perspective. I get you don’t have the time to respond to every single email. That’s understandable. But why be a dick about it? Then he compared himself to emailing the president? And said that he don’t do book blurbs? Way to go on contradictory. What’s wrong with helping people? And guiding them in the right direction? Isn’t that a part of stoicism? Cal is the real show here. Much more understanding and level headed. Much respect!

I'm a big fan of Daily Stoic and the creator Ryan Holiday, but after watching this video kind of disappointed he does not embody what he preaches

Man, Ryan has gone off the deep end with covid. Cal seems to embody stoicism. Also, I disagree with Ben Shapiro on ALOT of things, but to say he is extreme far right is just silly.

Ryan holiday from this interview everybody to you is just a money $. I took you for a person that wanted to learn about other people, but it's so obvious that you only want people to learn about.. You should go into the woods and stay there.
