How to Prep & Install Sod | DIY Sod Step-by-Step

This video is for the confident DIY'er who wants to install sod themselves and cut down on some of the costs. By all means if you're unsure, higher a professional, BUT it really isn't all that difficult. Don't let the size of the job scare you...it's ALL about the prep work. With a few helping hands you could do your whole lawn in no time at all! I'll go into more detail in the video but here are the basic steps:
1. Remove any grass, vegetation, or growth of any kind in the area you're wanting to lay sod
2. Break up the ground (using a tiller if need be) and/or add new topsoil. You'll want a
good 4 to 6 inch base of good topsoil for the best root system. Be sure to roll the ground out and get the perfect grade now. Preparation is KEY to success.
3. Add lime (if needed...more than likely it is but you can always have your soil tested) and add a starter fertilizer UNDER the new sod.
4. Lay out the sod starting at one side and keep the pattern the same through the process if possible. Butt up the edges tightly and snug them together. Also, be sure that with each new row your seams offset each other...this make sense after watching the video.
5. Roll out the sod with a lawn roller once everything is complete.
6. WATER WATER WATER!!!
It's a little more detailed than that, but it truly is THAT easy!!

Awesome tutorial. I'm a First timer, never Installed sod in life. I Was worried it wouldn't go well. Thankfully I found your video. It was simple and straight forward. I follow all your steps. The installation went well. It's been 12 days and my sod is still green

Holy God that Carolina red clay is no joke! Man I would've skipped putting sod there and maybe just planted clover. Really nice work though.

I don’t claim to be an expert in your area but I know a lot of people use St. Augustine (not my personal favorite because it’s a very thick course grass) but you could probably be fine with centipede, zoysia, or Bermuda too. If there’s a lot of foot traffic and or mild shade zoysia would do really well. If you don’t have irrigation and don’t get much rain I would go with Bermuda. It really comes down to preference. Not sure if I helped or muddied the waters 🤣

You could but I wouldn’t do it all at once.

Everyone is different, but it’s typically the cost of materials (after a small mark up) plus labor cost x estimated number of hours to complete the job. Once you’ve done enough and really know your costs you can figure it out to the sqft for quick and easy pricing.

Got a question. Just had a contractor level off a 20x20 pad in my yard for me. Seems like their prep is off. The soil was very high, clay and wet content. It's almost like a waterbed. Will this kill the sod because the roots can't penetrate the clay? We have 4 days of rain coming if that helps. Thanks all

It’s hard to say… it shouldn’t kill the sod if you keep it watered but you don’t want the roots to stay soaking wet either. On the flip side of things you don’t want the clay soil to be so hard that the roots don’t penetrate and dig in or you’ll always fight drought conditions. I’m not sure if this helps or not

I was told to battle clay soil break it up like as shown and then a layer of compost before installing the sod. Is this a good idea?

Compost is pretty rich and nitrogen so I wouldn’t do it straight. Mix it in with the topsoil if you want to, but adding the fertilizer like I did essentially does the same thing and I think it’s easier than mixing compost with topsoil.

Man I would have got a bunch of topsoil laid it down and rented a tiller and tilled it in until all that topsoil is mixed with the dirt before laying the sod

In this situation it does. I would prefer a little more sunlight for zoysia but this was what the customer wanted. Originally it was going to be artificial turf but they changed the work order last minute to meet budget restraints.

How do you fix the big gaps in between if already installed and rooted

If it’s a warm season turf you can get some sand and fill in the gaps and then just let Mother Nature take it from there. Fertilization and a proper watering schedule will help fill in the gaps quicker, but it will happen by itself overtime. For cool season grasses you can add topsoil in the fall before you reseed. Hope this helps!!

You never want to put sod on compacted soil. You need to stagger the sod pieces so they fit together like a puzzle. You should have put a couple inches of a mixed soil/compost mix down. This sod will for sure thin out over the next year and be gone in 2 seasons.

Thanks Jeff. The ground was harder than I preferred (actually we tried to sell them on artificial turf for this very reason) but their budget didn’t allow for it. We did however add soil and lime and fertilizer plus we did stager the turf like laying bricks. Last I heard the sod was still happy and healthy!

I have been told one should wet the back side of the sod before laying. Since you did not do that is this video why do you disagree with this method? Thank in advance for your response.

I’ve never heard of anyone doing that…I’m not saying it’s wrong, as long as it gets a good watering after installed. Also, if the job isn’t done in a day it’s best to water the sod on the pallet too.

Zoysia likes sun. 6+ hours or more a day. It will tolerate some shade but it’s a warm season turf and loves sunlight.

Slack on editing and struggling to do the work in a timely manner and video at the same time. Lack of labor force is making it increasingly difficult as well. My wife and I were just taking about making videos and content more intentional. Anything specific that interests you?
