Differences between rally-raid and WRC-style rallying? · Distance = A rally-raid day can have up to 500km of timed mileage, which nowadays is like 2-3 days worth of INTENSE rallying. · Format = Rally-raid is often done using a one-stage-per-day format although other formats are allowed including having a long neutralized part in the middle of a timed stage where the clock is stopped and you have some time to get to the next properly timed segment. · Recce and everything around it including notes = NO RECCE ALLOWED in rally-raid. You get handed a bunch of pace and orienteering notes and that's all your guide. You better hit all the waypoints in order or you could earn some MASSIVE time penalties. · Mid-day service = NO MID-DAY SERVICE ALLOWED in rally-raid. You only get to intervene your car in peace at the end of the day. During the day the clock will be ticking against you during every repair. This also means no midday refueling (cars and trucks have GIGANTIC fuel tanks for this reason)... except for bikes, quads and UTVs (still very big tanks though). The no-refueling policy is also a way to limit power output as making a 700hp car would be pointless as sometimes you'll need to make it run for 500km offroad on a single tank. · Surfaces = Almost no pavement allowed in a rally-raid timed stage. You could technically have a rally-raid on snow and mud but they will cancel a stage nowadays if that can happen because no high-speed long-distance offroad tyre can do shit on snow and mud. · Classes of competition = You know how strict and square everything thing about the cars is in WRC-style rallying? Not in rally-raid. There is a very complex table considering turbo/supercharger/natural aspiration, displacement, 2WD or 4WD and how heavy your car should be. The only real classes are for radically different concepts such as cars and buggies, "light prototypes" (very modified UTVs), regular UTVs and trucks of at least 5000kg (they're usually on the 9000kg side of things). I always love to mention how the 4x4 cars are forced to use slightly-modified roadlegal engines (think group A-ish mods) from the same automotive group they represent if they represent one. Toyota uses the LS500's engine, Minis run with the BMW 335d engine, the Ford Rangers run with the Mustang 5.0 engine and, since Prodrive isn't a brand, they've chosen to run with the 3.5 Ecoboost engine also from Ford. It's fun to think about what engines teams could use if they decided to make a Hyundai, Mercedes, Jeep and such. 2WD vehicles can use prototype engines like the never-seen-on-the-road turbodiesel engine the Peugeot 3008 DKR used.

Woah why is the music so loud throughout the explanation part of the video? Cool tour of the vehicle though.

I feel like a better question would be the difference between Dakar and Baja.

That's what I'd like to know as well
@rosa037 ай бұрын
@@joshb2059Bajas are pretty the same as WRC, the main difference is the size of the stages, baja stages are longer, and of course, the vehicles used are the same as in dakar. In Dakar the stages are enormous and aren't confined to roads, or dirt roads you just need to hit the waypoints in any way you want and the majority of time they follow "caps" (degrees of a compass)

Fuel consumption is 1 liter per 1 kilometer or around 2.3 mpg? That sounds a bit high.
@georgthesecond7 ай бұрын
By my calculations F1 cars do around 0.4 l per km in a race, but they must be more efficient with the hybrid. But the mentioned fuel consumption does sound quite high.

Dakar is WRC on steroids. The stages are longer, dangerous and navigation is IMPORTANT. Dont get me wrong i love WRC and i saw many rallies live but Dakar is one of the dangerous and demanding motorsport in the world. Loeb is the greatest WRC driver ever but he still didnt won the Dakar rally. Dont get me wrong - i respect him and i know that he will win someday - just the difference betwen two categories is massive

Go Loeb!

Lmao, the way you said Loeb didn't win dakar as if it would mean wrc drivers are worse than dakar drivers, are you serious? Do you really think any dakar winners could win WRC if they compete now 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@dejanzelko83617 ай бұрын
@@user-iy6nu8np5k i didnt said that. I respect Loeb i i think he can win Dakar. He is proved that is great driver also on sand. Look what he is doing this year. I just said that they are two very different categories of driving.
@user-iy6nu8np5k7 ай бұрын
@@dejanzelko8361 So what you say is we shouldn't assume a wrc winner to easily win when they compete in dakar since it has it's own unique challenges that also take time to master.
