The Dale Jr. Download got heated this week during the Dirty Air segment. Dale Earnhardt Jr. and co-host Mike Davis argue their points after the contact between NASCAR rivals Denny Hamlin and Ross Chastain at Pocono. Was it retaliation or just hard racing? Dale and Mike get passionate and give us their sides of the feud.

With all due respect to Mike, he’s being a stubborn ass. Anyone with eyes can see Denny specifically did what he did ONLY because it was Ross on his outside. And any competitor is always keeping score no matter what lap it is. He knew exactly what he was doing and seized his chance. Mike should also be a little more humble to the fact he’s talking to a former nascar cup series driver that also personally knows all of the players involved. Dale would absolutely know wayyyyyy more about this specific deal before any of us non-drivers would.

As a driver your constantly thinking of your next move in split seconds. When you see whos ahead of you you decide immediately how, when and where your going to pass them. You definitely take into account how that drivers raced you in the past and in-turn execute what you have planned. Dale was right, Denny passed plenty of other cars in that corner and nobody wrecked in that turn. Once Hamlin saw Chastain it was a surgical strike. Denny's a vet. He knows how to maneuver that car to create that incident without taking himself out. Denny's done it to countless other drivers over the years and knew how his car was handling and if he could pull it off. 100% intentional, 100% retaliation. Period.

Ross got what he deserved, but something about it being Denny Hamlin makes it annoying.. because Denny has wrecked guys before. He's also a total crybaby on top of being a hypocrite, so I have no empathy for him. Him doing it in front of the field was also reallyyy thoughtless. Fun listening to this discussion. Gonna have to agree with Dale though. I was surprised to find out the wreck that people didn't think that was retaliation. If any other driver was lined up next to Hamlin there's no way that situation would have had happened. I would agree that Hamlin gave Chastain the chance to lift and it wasn't the most malicious form of retaliation but Hamlin drove Chastain up the track not caring whether Chastain hit the wall or not.

Pretty much, plus at Pocono, 17 laps is a LONG way to go. Maybe you pull that move on the last lap or two, but there's no way you risk a long feud, possibly wrecking yourself, and possible retaliation with that many laps to go. You spend the next 12 laps or so trying to pass him clean, if that doesn't work, at the end of the race you get a little physical.

I listened to this yesterday on the podcast and I couldn't wait to see with my own eyes Mike's reaction to Jr cussing. First and foremost Mike you are 100% wrong. What Denny did is an extraordinary common move. I've been going to race tracks for the last 40+ years and have personally seen this move. Hell I had a buddy of mine who would run the outside guy up the track on restarts and thought it was funny as hell. The inside guy running the outside guy out of real estate happens all the time in either retaliation or just to teach a guy a lesson or just for fun. I'm willing to bet that that move was repeated at least 50 times this past weekend alone at the 100s of short tracks across the country. Mike sad to say but you're talking out you butt. (I'm not gonna cuss at you like Jr did) What Danny did was 100% intentional and yes he was thinking about retaliation with 20 laps to go.
@zacharyradford5552
@zacharyradford5552 Жыл бұрын
Denny would have done that to any drivers.
@thomasredden4263
@thomasredden4263 Жыл бұрын
Ok but that doesn’t make mike wrong that makes his point. He’s saying this wasn’t retaliation it was two guys racing for a win and not giving an inch, and if it were any other drivers it would be seen as such, but bc it’s these two who have had the run ins they have this year it seems much more weighted of a move than it actually likely was. If Ross lifts he will have other opportunities to get by, but he takes the riskiest move he can and just send it around the outside knowing full well who is inside of him. Denny didn’t turn into him, he ran for as good of an exit as possible and Ross chose to stay in it and get way higher than he should have been and left him self no exit without lifting, which he was unwilling to do. That isn’t Denny fencing the dude. That’s Ross being unwilling to see the forest through the trees. I’m not saying junior is wrong bc it’s 100% not something anyone could know except Denny, but for all the work Denny put on him last time he was running ross hard, he seems to be fully willing to blatantly prove a point, so why now do something that ambiguous as your way of proving a point when this dude needs to be unabashedly fenced for the way he has driven?

Gotta agree that Denny knew who was on his outside, but it never came up that Ross also knew who was on his inside and didn’t lift knowing that Denny wasn’t going to give him that space late in the race. The driver code went out the window between Hamlin/Chastain long ago and Chastain couldn’t count on “driver code” in that instance.

I’m of the opinion that Denny would have done this to anyone that he needed to after the restart in order to win. So I wouldn’t say it’s deliberate. But I also believe that when he did it to Ross, he enjoyed it lol. Love seeing this back and forth. This is exactly what we need today. More of these types of conversations where two people disagree, get pissed, and still are friends at the end of it.

The scalpel vs hammer is perfect. Hamlin is not brash, but calculated at this point. They restarted side by side.
