I was never a big Junior fan when he was racing (didn't dislike him either) but I think the man should be running NASCAR. They'd be doing much better off with someone like Earnhardt Jr. making the calls. He understands the sport has moved forward but also knows where and when to keep the tradition.

Dale Jr needs an executive role at NASCAR. He brings so much knowledge and experience. He knows what a majority of the fans want and he has ideas how to achieve those fan experiences. If NASCAR would give him a position he could probably bring in viewers in droves.

I'm more pissed over NBC changing channels with a few laps left in the race than I am about the yellow line rule,

At 24:00 Jr says "everybody go back and watch the end of that race".. some of us missed it because we set our DVR to record an hour and a half after the scheduled stop of the race in case it does go long only for the network to switch it to another channel to let f'n local news broadcast.

I remember Jr was talking about this last year. Just drop it, NASCAR. We don’t need this rule anymore.

Until the Reagan Smith/Tony Stewart incident, I thought on the last lap, the yellow line rule was void. I still think that should be the case. As soon as they take the white flag for the last lap, the yellow line becomes void. On the last lap, pass anywhere you can. But that's just me.

Thank you for letting me know that they took Chase's penalty back. I had not heard that. Should have never penalized in the first place. GET RID OF THE YELLOW LINE RULE! NASCAR should not be making such subjective calls.

When I watched it live, I was like holy crap this is amazing. Then they mentioned the yellow line and I'm like omg this will ruin this great finish. And it did, it tarnished a great finish.

The drivers aren't ALLOWED to police themselves anymore, back in the day, you did something stupid, Dale Sr. Rusty, Jeff Burton ect, would come see you after the race, and let you know you messed up, NOW, if the drivers get too confrontational, they go to the hauler. I miss the NASCAR of old, when driver COULD police themselves.

I agree the yellow line rule needs to go! The no locking bumpers rule in Xfinity and and Gander Trucks needs to go too. These are professional racers and they need to police themselves on rules of this nature

My biggest disappointment was Nascar did not penalize Denny for gaining multiple positions below the yellow line!

Talladega was great in terms of racing, it was the yellow line that caused all this uproar... If we just get rid of the yellow line rule, we wouldn’t be having these controversies! I know it’s supposed to keep driver “safe”, but drivers need to start policing themselves so they don’t do these mistakes NASCAR is concerned with. This is the top series and talent in stock car racing! Let them race and police themselves!

Hearing Dale be so open about that situation in the 500 with Vickers was honestly hilarious and eye opening. I’m sure many drivers have the exact same mentality in the moment out there and it goes to show you EXACTLY why the rule needs to go. At this point, it might even prevent crashes who knows.

I think this is the easiest way to look at this.. NASCAR makes NO rules about a driver getting up in the marbles.. Why?.. Because it usually comes with its own consequences.. The same is true for the apron.. For every perceived advantage a driver might get momentarily, there's a price to pay in terms of momentum and getting back up on the track.. JUST as many wrecks are caused by drivers trying to get a momentum advantage by running too high and there's not a SINGLE rule about that... Eliminate the yellow line and let the natural consequences play out..

Jr. talking about the 09' 500 about Vickers is a great callback. Keep in mind that was coming off the 08' Fall Talladega Controversy with Regan Smith where he got penalized for being forced below the line. That then resulted in this move, it certainly resulted in the wreck with Brad & Carl in the next Spring Dega race, it was pretty much drivers making sure they never get shoved below the double line.

They could do what iracing does and allow drivers to go below the line but if they cause an accident its automatically their fault and suspensions/warnings follow

Mike's wrong about NASCAR being the only sport with judgement calls. ALL sports do. In baseball, no two umpires call the same strike zone, even though the rule is pretty clearly stated in the rulebook. In football, no two refs have the same idea of what pass interference is. In basketball, you can beat the crap out of a rookie but can't even look at a superstar without getting called for a foul. The problem with ALL of these examples (and many others), as well as NASCAR, is the fact that these judgement calls are never called consistently...even by the same official from time to time. If a rule isn't working and all it does is piss everybody off no matter how it's called, well, that rule needs to be rewritten or done away with altogether.

I've always said when they fathered in the yellow line,that it was just a way to police the drivers and since day one the calls from nascar have changed,not been consistently enforced,have created more wrecks,and took away from the real excitement of the race!It should be taken out of the picture for many reasons!On every occasion it has deflated the out come!That's right JR!

I agree, we are arguing over a lot of judgement calls, reduce those and get the racing back into the drivers hands. Let their action be what we talk about. If the rule is not cut and clear then remove them. I bet if we laid out all the rules and have a group of drivers and nascar and some knowledgeable fans review and work out things. We’ve lost our sport when rules became more important than racing

I would be interested to hear Jr.'s opinion on what Brett Griffin proposed on DBC. The yellow line rules are all the same until 1 to go and then there's nothing for the yellow line. It's not a perfect solution, but it's simple, and it would cut down a lot of controversy.

Very lost in Sunday’s finish was the fact that all three races this weekend ended with a wreck in turn 3, all out of the way of the leaders. Both races on Saturday they threw the yellow, both races ended in turn 3, ruining exciting races back to the start/finish line Sunday, there was no yellow, and thus leading to the controversial move by Hamlin. Let that sink in.

Remove the yellow line and put in a yellow wall, They hit it, do you fine the driver who forced them to hit? Never happens when drivers bump each other into the outside wall. Denny chose to go down there stayed down until he passed everyone so they give him the win? What's up with that?

I just don't like how it's different every year, for years now we've been complaining that they penalized the guy who went below the line, and not the guy who forced him, except for one or two random races, and according to the way it's been for years, Denny went below the line and should have been penalized. I don't even think the line rule has to go away completely, just lessen it, there needs to be a line in the sand of what's racing for position in an intense situation, and what's a bonehead move and that's easier to call than trying to make a decision that's going to piss 50% of the fans off. Just take the rule away on the last lap on the back stretch, and once you get out of 4, problem solved, they're gonna wreck anyways what difference does it make if there is a damn good race to the finish and one of the cars goes 2 or 4 tires below the line to get there?

Makes me think they are setting up Hamlin for the 2020 champ.

I was at Talladega spring race 2003. I recall there was big controversy when Jr drove the 8 below the line out of 4. He did in fact get to keep the win. Surprised he didn’t mention it

I can solve this problem easily. Once the leader takes the white flag, then the yellow line rule is off the table. Meaning the drivers can go below the line to race for the checkered flag.

I personally am so disgusted at the amount of penalties that were handed out to other drivers and the 11 drives 300 yards below the line and NASCAR keeps his win. This race almost broke me as far as watching races go.

I still can't get over that 2008 dega finish. Regan Smith had that win straight up stolen from him. Also when you look at when they penalized Justin Haley at Daytona a few years ago; no yellow line rule and everyone is talking about how awesome a move he made to win that race but nope because 3-5 inches of his car was below the yellow line.

I would like a group of former drivers make these judgement calls. They are the drivers, as a collective group they understand what's right and wrong rather than a rule book does

The only thing they could do would be to 1. put grass up to the edge of the racing surface 2. Do what they did at pocono and add a inside wall up to the edge of the racing surface 3. Just save money and eliminate the rule

That race was like the latest presidential debate. Afterwards I shook my head and wondered, why did I just watch that. I watch fewer Nascar races now. Nascar has been trying to regain their viewers, the seats have been emptying before this virus. Putting more rules in place will not fix the sport. I don’t watch for the wrecks. I watch for the racing. The average person will never have anything like one of these cars. The kids wreck these cars because no one tells them no. Nascar has become a government that we have lost trust in, and the kids are out of control. It’s all not fun to watch anymore.

I really liked what Dale said at the end about rewatching the ending of the race and acting like the yellow line rule doesn’t exist. While it won’t change the reality of what happened it definitely gives you a different perspective on what the outcome could’ve and probably should’ve been.

I think the bottom line is if you eliminate the rule, people might still argue about a finish but they won't be mad at the entirety of NASCAR. They will be arguing about a drivers conduct which is the way it should be. Get rid of the rule.

I was watching on nbcsn... But I was disappointed to hear that NBC switched before the end of race leaving allot of people unable to see the finish. Come on NBC ... That's the second time this year that I have seen the end of races cut off way too early ...

How is there a rule that you can't push someone below a line but there is no rule about pushing someone into a wall? Also, no one was penalized for forcing Denny below the line. So...how did Hamlin not get penalized?
