Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s Dirty Mo Media

3 жыл бұрын

Following the first NASCAR Cup Series dirt race in over 50 years, Speedway Motorsports Inc. CEO Marcus Smith joins Dale Earnhardt Jr. after hosting the dirt race weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Dale Jr. along with co-host Mike Davis have a lot of questions about what went down in Bristol and what could be coming down the pipeline for Smith and SMI.
Smith details the next-level weather challenges Bristol faced over the weekend. He explains how his team adapted and overcame the curveball Mother Nature threw at them in their first attempt to host the Cup Series on dirt.
He then explains the origins of the idea of covering Bristol with dirt, why he initially turned it down, and how it eventually all came together. Plus, what lessons were learned from Bristol’s original dirt attempt in the early 2000s? He shares those and why some dirt from that track was used again.
Crafting a brand-new dirt track was no easy task and Smith details the process of preparing the surface and the intricate details that made it work. Then, Dale Jr. shares his hopes for when the dirt is removed from the surface later this spring.
The dirt race weekend will return in 2022 and Smith explains how that decision came together over the weekend and the unique way it was announced during Monday’s Cup race.

@@joenagy9974 I think every dirt track should be prepped the way they do it at the Chili Bowl. They use some sort of powered implement. I'm not sure what its original intended use is, but it is like an egg beater for clay. Works great to really rough up the track in a short time period. Only track I've seen it used though.

From a person that was at the races, Bristol Motor Speedway did an amazing job with this event. The storms were really bad in the area and they weren't hesitant at all to call the race to be ran on Monday which was the best idea and the track looked great considering how much rain there was. The sun shined through the dust and made it hard to see on the front stretch where I sat but that is a factor of dirt track racing you're gonna get some dust. Other than that it was a great race and only hope to see it improve next year.

You guys should have a fan on one of the shows. What better way to truly understand how the fans feel. Than hearing it from their own mouth. If not fans. Then grass roots/weekly guys who can give you insight on what is happening in the trenches on a week to week basis. However it could be done. I was very excited to see the race on dirt, Just wish the upper part of the track would support a line where you could have cars drifting and passing by carrying speed. Later in the race the trace became one lane. Maybe have more track reconditioning after the stages. Hey, we seem to get a lot of rain-outs and I use the NASCAR application to track race times, tell NASCAR they need to have the app remind you when the race starts and adjusts when the races are delayed or moved a day. I missed the first part of the race on Monday, my DVR does not adjust when there is a race delay and remembering when the race starts on a Monday I need a reminder. The app does not support race delays very well if at all.

Look this dirt thing has a chance to bring back the energy that Nascar has been lacking for a better part of 20 years. Hard work and swinging like Nascar did was a huge part of why this is an will be amazing thing for the future! You ask me I think that these dirty things should have more of a stock feel to them and less of a championship Cup race car look to them and I'm with Junior on the look of the cars because the more stock that the cars look the more people can relate Like for the championship for instance, you could run 3 dirt tracks 3 short tracks 3 Speedways and one Superspeedway it balances out perfect plus it brings this new life back to the sport that it has been missing in this could ultimately help heal America in a lot of ways because I remember as a kid we was rushing from church to watch the race it didn't matter what politics were in NASCAR can help heal a massive wound we were dealt in 2001 two of them actually and it's never been the same since and Bristol on dirt brought back that feeling a little bit good job cuz I need a job by the way if anyone hiring

maybe it was just mishandled, likely to get the right surface you need to oil the track, I am sure the EPA would frown on that. I am from Richmond and I remember dirt track racing, daytime and it was not like Mondays race, you don't have much at stake, the sport is almost dead, maybe a good old figure eight race next, or racing suvs or crossovers, yea I can see that saving Nascar. Good Luck with it, I see the sport lasting maybe 5 more years

People really need to stop with the go to a purpose built dirt track. Especially Eldora. There's not 1 dirt track around that could hold the crowd for a cup race. The cup race had a reduced capacity of 30k, due to Covid. Eldora can only seat 30k at max with no restrictions. Bristol had professional people that run dirt races come in and do track prep. You can only do so much track prep or water, due to the windshields. You can't water the track to much due to clay getting on the windshield. So you have to run it a little drier so it doesn't stick to the windshield. Running it drier makes it dustier though. To fix their issues, they need to remove the windshield, put a rock screen in like a dirt late model or modified, make a carbon fiber box to enclose radios and other things that dirt may mess up and have drivers run tear offs. With no windshield you can run a wetter tackier track. Only issue may be the opening of the grill for the radiator, but you could probably build that some into the hood with a scoop and run different duct work.

Come on Man!?! All they need to do is separate the Nationals and the Cup Race by a Weekend. Run it at Night. Where the Sun isn’t a Factor. Work the Track. Groom the track. Then bring NASCAR in.

@@matthewhicks1725 Come on man what? You're basically admitting what they did wrong too. They ran it in the day after the truck race and only groomed it after stage 2 which did little to improve the track. That race sucked!!!!

It’s crazy how different fans’ perspectives really are. I guess your one of the keyboard warriors who thinks they know better. Or think they know how to run a event.Have you ever promoted or ram an event? I’m guessing you haven’t. I thought it was a Great Race! The Weather for one threw a curve. I think they did outstanding with the conditions that they were given. That track had 1400 Race cars on it the week before. Which turned Thousands of Laps. The Dust Happens. Its just part of it. I’m sure Richard Petty, Ned Jarrett and Junior Johnson ran under some pretty dusty Daylight conditions. But yes, a simple nighttime start would fix it. Marcus Smith definitely needs to be in the fold when it comes to making decisions with NASCAR. The guy is with he times. Plus he is willing to put himself out there for what he believes. Kyle and those guys are in defense mode cause they know that the industry is going to open up to a whole different group of people. The more Dirt shows the better. And what’s this crap about making them drive “Dirt Cars”? In the old days that was part of it. They ran the same car on both🤷‍♂️ Figure it out!

I agree. Guys running on a budget equal to Rick Hendrick's 3rd cousin's ashtray change just a week earlier on the same track bested most cup cars by more than 2 seconds in lap times during practice. Bout like me in a speedo; it fits, does its job but just isn't gonna appeal to my target demographic.

If they are going to bring NASCAR to a real dirt track, other than Eldora because I think they screwed Tony Stewart over the whole dirt track thing, another good one would be Terre Haute. Never been to a bad race there, and every May when I make my trek to Indy for the 500, Terre Haute is my favorite stop all week for the USAC sprint cars. The grandstand isn't huge, but there is nothing next to the track, so it wouldn't be hard to put up temporary grandstands like other series do for street races. Plus it would be a whole lot easier and cheaper to bring grandstands to the dirt track, than it is to bring the dirt track to the grandstands.
