Wholly agree, as much as I love the militaristic nature of the Daleks I would love to see a story explore Dalek life when they are not campaign with this original concept. Additionally I have a head canon that includes the old origin comic book. After the final nukes were dropped the original Kaleds mutated into the Daleks we saw on screen and kept parts of their original culture. Eventually the Daleks who were trapped in the bunker after the events of Genesis of the Daleks. Eventually made their way back to the surface with the Dalek Prime installing himself as emperor and kickstarted their mission to conquer the universe.

As far as I'm aware, the 8th Doctor BF audios don't contradict the books, apart from one or two inconsistencies - Storm Warning makes it clear that the Doctor has been travelling for a while since the events of the TV Movie, so it's possible that the 8th Doctor books happen before the Main Range 8th Doctor audios

@@dalekbumps EDA is a whole other can of worms, but I'm more referring to the VNA, where Benny comes from also directly follows Survival, so it's hard to know how to fit her and Hex, at leat with Ace being 35 by the time she leaves the TARDIS. I guess the main thing with the BBC range that they were not given as much respect as big finish in 8's regeneration speech. I’ve only listened to one story with Hex so far (The Magic Mousetrap) and he was deliberately out of character for much of that, I have seen more of Benny and thus have become warmer to her.

I'd give the 1953 movie version of the Fighting Machines a good chance against the Daleks as well, as in that movie the Americans drop a nuke on them and they remained utterly unaffected. Remove their vulnerability to bacteria and either movie version would at least give the Daleks a damn good fight. The Fighting Machines from the novel, Jeff Wayne's musical version and pretty much every other adaptation I've seen wouldn't stand a single chance due to their lack of shields.

there really is a lot of interesting match-ups between each adaptation -- of which i have to say that unfortunately the Jeff Wayne one is the most straightforward, since even though they are powerful, they're just too big, slow, and easily-destroyed (a single direct cannon hit is enough to totally destroy one of the machines), which makes it out to seem that the only reason normal human artillery can't deal with the tripods effectively is because of possibly being out-ranged and not being accurate enough due to the time period. even though the martians from the original novel might be the weakest in terms of firepower, i'm curious how things would go in a one-off battle (not a drawn out or large-scale conflict, where the daleks obviously have the advantage) since the fighting machines from the novel are much slimmer, nimbler, and faster than most if not all future adaptations which seem to make the fighting machines more "tank-like" in a sense -- kind of like the daleks most of the time, actually. the fight becomes a bit more nuanced than "who has the bigger and badder machine with death rays"
