Andre Beck, well even Patrick said that if it remained the Bobby-Pam show, Dallas wouldn't have taken off like it did, and that it became the JR Show, it turned out for the better. Patrick didn't like playing the good guy at all, he found it boring, many of the cast members knew he didn't like it, but JR being bad, was better for the show in the long run. Larry had the interesting character, Patrick had the boring role, and Patrick himself has admitted that.

The only reason JR ever made sure Lucy stayed at Southfork was for Jock and Miss Ellie, because they wanted Lucy with them, and JR would have done anything to score brownie points with his daddy. JR had no vested interest for himself, in Lucy being around, and would have liked it just fine, if Lucy, Valene, and Gary would have been one happy family and stayed away from Dallas for good, but as I said, JR knew his parents wanted their only grandchild at Southfork. So he made sure Lucy stayed, and kept Valene away. Gary wouldn’t likely have been motivated to return just for his daughter, as he had resigned himself to being a weak loser who wasn’t fit to be a father, and felt she was better off without him, whether she was with her mother or her grandparents. However, he would have, and did, have motivation to return for Valene, which is why JR wanted her to stay away. It all came down to him wanting to keep Gary away.

Loved these Val and JR scenes. It's a shame they didn't have more crossovers between Dallas and Knots Landing. The reason they stopped the crossovers was because of Bobby "dying". When Patrick Duffy came back to Dallas and they explained Bobby's death as a dream, the same explanation wouldn't have worked with Knots Landing where Bobby's death was talked about at length.

Fred G. Sanford, she never would have invited Valene back to Southfork. Think about it, how many people continue to have Realtionship with someone after a Death or Divorce. Also, Miss Ellie thought taking Lucy in was her way of showing that someone in the Family "Loved" her and since she was closest to Gary she felt she owed him that.
@laminage9 жыл бұрын
Although JR was a SOB, he's not all responsible for what went down. Remember it wasn't his fault that Gary was a Drunk, that he didn't take responsibility for his Child, and when Gary #1 came back he showed he can't handle responsibility when he was given a chance to Manage a Company or when Ray Krebbs tried to show him The Books from Southfork and showed what a great enterprise it was. Gary #2 even admitted he wasn't good at handling responsibility.
@lecuyerdooley10849 жыл бұрын
It's one thing to not have business sense, but it's an entirely different thing for your brother, who knows you don't have business sense, to set you up running a company that he knows is doomed to fail. He purposely destroyed his brother Gary when he came back to Southfork in 1978. JR clearly had some psychological issues. He wanted Ewing Oil, Southfork, and his parents exclusively. He could not stand to have to share anything with any of his brothers, and he would do almost anything to hurt them so that he could be number one.
@laminage9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you're so right on about that. He always felt that he could only have Daddy's Love if he bought in Multimillion Dollar Deals. Remember in The Pilot Episode where Bobby announced he was going to work at Ewing Oil and how Happy Jock was saying he had no problem with him Taking on Responsibility. JR Whines "You Put Me In Your Chair Daddy" but there was more than that. He liked Bobby being on the Road and only home on Weekends, he liked having Daddy to "Himself", he hated sharing. Sadly enough there are alot of Kids way into adulthood who act the exact same way.
@Ares999999 жыл бұрын
Lecuyer Dooley Oh? We're supposed to be feeling sorry for Gary and Bobby? The first was a little nobody who couldn't even stand up to anyone, the latter someone who got his kicks out of hitting people. THEY, too, had psychological issues.
@lecuyerdooley10849 жыл бұрын
Whatever their issues, they never ONCE conspired to intentionally harm their brother J.R. If they did, it was a defensive response to something J.R. did to them first. J.R. was a self-centered bastard. "Ewing" was not just his birth right; it was all of his brothers, his nieces, his nephews, all of their birth rights, too.
@Ares999999 жыл бұрын
Lecuyer Dooley Then let them fight for it, instead of whining Jock didn't give them this for free. As Jock said, 'Power is something that you TAKE.' Only J.R. understood that. If you don't like how he turned out, blame Jock Ewing and his parenting style.

JR would have been just fine with Lucy being with her parents, and them all just staying away, but he would have done anything to get in better graces with Jock. So he made sure Lucy stayed and Valene stayed away, because Gary wouldn’t have come back just for his daughter. How come JR didn't like Val
@woohooboy7 жыл бұрын
She was from a poor working class family and JR arrogantly thought Val wasn't good enough to be part of the Ewing clan. He then manipulated to have her marriage fall apart by getting Gary to drink again and taking Lucy from her and in the process forcing her off Southfork where she ended up returning back to her family. What's never properly addressed is why both Jock and Miss Ellie took a backseat to all of this and worse still not bothering to intervene. Which means they were either blind to what was going on or couldn't care less. Either way, as patriarch and matriarch of the family their lack of involvement in all of this doesn't paint either of them in a particularly good light.
@jeffreyhirsch85207 жыл бұрын
The writers of the show did that on purpose in order to make more drama so more people will continue to tune in. They couldn't get Dallas to be too boring or too Walton's like for that matter.
