me too. I think most people would NOT want to be sustained that way. It is not life but sheer torture ! we need euthanasia ; not that hypocritical "death with dignity" they have in Oregon ! too many people die too soon, afraid they will not be able to swallow the famous drink. Just let the medical community give them a powerful IV injection of opiates. Make it legal !!!!!!! First do no harm ! RIGHT ! but second, do not tolerate such torture as people are unable to end their miserable lives. They need our help. We do it for our beloved pets, so, why not our family members ?

I’m so sorry that he has this. He is a big inspiration to many people. I’m sorry to him, his wife, his kids, and his family. I agree that there should be changes with how football is played. However, maybe he can be a voice that helps change it. I wanted to tear up when he smiled. It goes to show in the midst of hard times there is still a reason to smile and be happy somehow. I wish many prayers and blessings to him and his family. He has a great support system.

This is the first time I've come across these comments. I want to thank all of you that left positive kind comments. Steve and I have been married for almost 30 years. There was a time during this journey we had nothing left of our savings because the majority of it went to Steve's care. Steve chose to live and that meant going on a ventilator. His daily care is very important and when someone is bedridden they're susceptible to bed sores. He's defied the odds against him and I believe it's his amazingly positive attitude, faith in God and the love and care of our family. We have been very fortunate throughout the last 18 yrs since his diagnosis to have friends and organizations that have helped us. I have no idea what the future holds but if there's any lesson to be learned from this and what I hope to share with others is that love will see you through. When you have children it's our job as parents to teach them that you don't run when faced with adversity. for those that felt the need to leave negative, inaccurate comments about our life...I can only pray for you.

Any physical contact sport, Australia and new Zealand has a lot of rugby players that have it. it's still rare even with that. The lawsuit was for concussions, any blow to the head can cause something like this. Look at ALI he got Parkinson's I always attribute risk vs reward though its kinda crazy but today there is no excuse. People know the dangers of playing. But the $$ is too high so they risk it.

ALS isn't the main cause. CTE is. When your brain bounces around in your head, permanent damage is done. When they didn't have the helmets that are worn today, they tackled differently, trying to avoid head contact. When the style helmets we see today were introduced, players were given a false impression of safety. They would go in head first to make tackles and not worry too much because they had no clue of the damage being done on the inside. It's believed that the NFL knew of the issues but chose to hide them because of the money involved. But when players started having issues at an alarming rate, people's eyes, mainly doctors, started to speak up. Watch the movie "Concussions" with Will Smith. watchgoose and Sean M. Don't say shit when you have no clue.

What a great wife/women. However at what point has Steve lost the quality of life? How much money is the family I debt for with all the medical needs Steve has? Is it only the machines that are keeping Steve alive? Does Steve feel any dignity as a man living this way? Are my questions insensitive or disrespectful? I apologize to anyone if it offends them. I don't feel I'm alone asking. God bless Steve & family.

These questions are normal to ask and are questions that we should all answer in our wills and advanced directives. Answering these sensitive and uncomfortable questions, while still healthy, can help family members cope and do the best things for us when we are sick. Maybe Steve wanted as much help as possible to live as long as he could for his family. His wife is a wonderful support in making that happen. God bless them both on the journey

My grandma who was a very active 68 year old , suddenly started falling, and having muscle weakness in her body in January of 2011. In March of 2011, she was officially diagnosed with ALS at the Cleveland clinic. She went from a gardening, fly fisherman, to not being able to move by Early April of 2011. My mother and my aunt (my grandma's daughter , and my dad (my grandma's son) had to care for her almost around the clock. She eventually devoloped the trouble breathing and swallowing and was put on hospess care. She was admitted to the hospital in July for something that I can't remember and passed away a few days later. She battled this Terrible disease for 6 months.. they said her case was abnormal and very fast. It'll be 8 years this July since she's been gone .. she had taken a statin drug called crestor for her BP for 5 years prior and we think this was what started the sudden muscle weakness and eventually lead to ALS. We know multiple people that have taken it and have also had this bizarre muscle weakness. It seems like it is a lot more common than it use to be. Prayers to all who are or have a en affected by this terrible disease.

@@CedarMountainsnow seriously. I am a nurse and unless I have a reason to don gloves, I touch my patients without them. I can feel so much more without them, temperature, dryness etc. And people still need contact from caregivers, gloves feel very impersonal. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we have them, but gloves are used when you are likely to come in contact with bodily fluids.

Wow she’s a great wife. But in my opinion she is wasting her life away with all due respect. I rather die than put my wife through that. Let her move on while she’s still young.

Wow that's a little harsh. Would she be wasting her life away if that was her son? For some people, especially mothers, nothing brings more joy than spending time with their loved ones

ALS has to be one of the worst diseases I've ever heard of... being trapped in your body and having full mental capacity would be worse than being in prison... Your prisoner in your own body... I don't think I would be able to put my loved ones through that and I wouldn't want to go through it myself I would probably just pick a date and end it with the assistance of whoever even if I had to move to Colorado...
