Which areas of a vehicle tire are safe to repair ?. For the sake of the video I used a sticky string repair kit to repair the three punctures. Plug repair kits like this are usually only used as emergency repairs to get you to a tire shop and have the tire fully inspected and the puncture patched from the inside. If the tire has run completely flat, even for a short distance, the inner part of the sidewalls could be damaged. It could be dangerous to repair the puncture externally, using a plug repair kit, and then continue driving on that tire without knowing if it has been damaged internally. The only way to check the tire for any damage is to have it removed from the wheel and thoroughly inspected professionally at a tire shop. Tires are easily replaceable, people are not !
In this video I carried out repairs on the three different sections of the tire:
1. Treads
The flat treaded section of the tire is the only area where you can safely repair a puncture. It is the thickest part of the tire and is reinforced with steel belts. It is also the part of the tire that flexes the least. Repairable ?: Yes
2. Shoulder
The 'shoulder' of the tire is the section between the treaded section and sidewall of the tire. This section of the tire is not as strong as the treaded area as it is not reinforced with steel belts. Repairing this section of a tire is deemed unsafe, as the shoulder of the tire is not reinforced with steel belts. The shoulder section of the tire flexes when the steering wheel is turned left and right and when the tire rolls left or right due to lateral force when cornering. This flexing can cause the repair to fail over time. When the shoulder section of a tire is damaged, it is recommended that you do NOT repair the tire but have a new tire fitted. Repairable ?: No
3. Sidewall
The sidewall is the most flexible part of the tire and the least reinforced. It is also the thinnest part of the tire and, therefore, the weakest. Repairing damage to the sidewall is deemed unsafe as the sidewall is the thinnest and most flexible part of the tire. As well as flexing when the wheels are turned left and right or rolling side to side, the sidewall also flexes when under load changes and when driving over bumps and braking etc. This amount of flexing will likely cause most repairs to fail over time. When the sidewall of a tire is damaged, it is recommended that you do NOT repair the tire but have a new tire fitted. Repairable ?: No

Could you do a repair on the shoulder or Sidewall just to get you home or to a tyre garage??? Say you're on the motorway......

Ive plugged the shoulder & sidewall of tires plenty of times. As long as you use common sense & dont drive crazy & hit every pothole you see, the plug can hold up just fine.
