The process of manufacturing a blade from Damascus steel, welded from the washers of the grover and powder iron in the container. The cutting edge is welded steel W1-7. Hardened to a hardness of 62 units by Rockwell.

Saw you hand mixing the powders, thought you might like a cool "diy" tip. If you drill a small hole in a jam jar lid, run a bolt through it and secure it with a washer and a nut (so the shank of the bolt is on the "outside" side of the lid), you can attach the lid to a hand drill. Then put the powders in the jar, fasten the lid and let it go for a while to mix the powders. This also works as a rock tumbler and a polisher/cleaner if you use sand or baking soda as the grinding substance. Make sure the drill is variable speed. If you want to use it to tumble rocks, consider gluing felt to the inside of the jar or use a plastic jar to avoid breakage.

Interesting how this channel developed over time…. No black pepper or chilies in the mix. Stamp positioned by eye on blade with a hammer smack. Blade tucked away as usual for tea, but not enough tea to share with us. We still get our beautiful blade, some may say that’s all we need.

That feel. I made two swords, an Oakeshott XIIIa and XVIIIc (with a shorter blade than "standard"), a tanto, some big curved knives, a pukko, a Scramasax. Till now it took me a gigantous amount of time to craft handles (XVIIIc, pukko and a curved knife still without handle), most handles are still waiting laquer since 2019. More than crafting it is the will that's missing, also i craft those from raw ancient hardwood small logs..., wood on market is trash, it takes a while, plus you need a clean environment for woodworking...in my case my kitchen. I use band saw to cut the logs, then all by hand, everything, too easy to mess up with power tools....

Exactly, these videos on youtube create stuff that look like damascus but the real technique is lost and forgotten when gunpoweder became common. The last users were ottomans as far as I know. With gunpowder they didn't need super hard steel anymore so they said fuck it, we got cannons and explosives here
