Damien seems to be such a nice and down-to-earth guy. Can't wait to see this movie. He's the best young filmmaker alongside Robert Eggers.

I was fortunate enough to get to meet Damien at a screening with Q&A. Incredibly nice, humble, down-to-Earth guy. Stood in a crowd of a few dozen fawning fans, and he talked with every single person that came up to him and took photos.

Glad to see this movie getting some love. Not every filmmaker's film will be a success. I personally loved it. In the end, it moved me very much. Bravo to Damien 🍸

Like most truly visionary projects, 'Babylon' is destined to be misunderstood and polarizing for the next 10 years until detractors realize it really was That Masterpiece all along. Yes, I'll plant my flag now and compare the current spate of reactions to those of Kubrick's films, another visionary artist who spent much of his career being sorely misunderstood and unfairly maligned: initially the feelings of a new Kubrick film tended to be confusion, frustration, and a sense that the man was mired in self-indulgence. But then, as year after year after year passes, suddenly there forms a sea change in recognizing the works' latent genius. It happened with '2001', 'A Clockwork Orange', 'Barry Lyndon', 'The Shining', 'Eyes Wide Shut'... and it'll happen to 'Babylon'. Yeah, I'm saying it. Best film of 2022, and an early viable candidate for film of the decade if the divisive responses are any indication. The most divisive films always end up being the most important ones, whether you like it or not. ;) Good stuff, Jake!

I really liked First Man and La La Land. Damien is a true talent in Hollywood, no doubt. I look forward to seeing Babylon even though it's a massive flop. Many of my favorite films were bombs at the theater.

Here's how I see it: Like most truly visionary projects, 'Babylon' is destined to be misunderstood and polarizing for the next 10 years until detractors realize it really was That Masterpiece all along. I'll plant my flag now and compare the current spate of reactions to those of Kubrick's films, another visionary artist who spent much of his career being sorely misunderstood and unfairly maligned: initially the feelings of a new Kubrick film tended to be confusion, frustration, and a sense that the man was mired in self-indulgence. I think in terms of box office, marketing for this was... not great. I personally never saw much in the way of TV or print ads, even in the weeks leading up to its release, and mainly knew about it through dedicated film forums etc. And I also don't think the marketing really properly conveyed just how decidedly non-Hollywood this film is: mainstream audiences wanted 'Once Upon A Time in Hollywood' but instead get a modern-day Fellini that shits on the industry (literally) as much as it celebrates it. It is a film of fascinating contradictions, and this might be a core reason as to why so many viewers are soured by it. But Chazelle brilliantly shows a tacit understanding that the creation of art itself will always carry with it contradictions and cognitive dissonances, because art is life, and life is one big messy struggle. And this is something your average, 10-films-a-year mainstream viewer does NOT want to hear. But again, did the marketing do much to reflect this sense of controlled chaos? Anyway. Best film of 2022, and an early viable candidate for film of the decade if the divisive responses are any indication. The most divisive films always end up being the most important ones, whether people like it or not.

The reason why it bombed was not because it was bad. But because they didnt market it well. I think the trailer confused average movie goers into what the film was about and they didnt understand the trailer thats why a lot of people didnt go. But most cinephiles like myself loved it.

Did Jake fawn all over the boy wonder? This film missed it's mark by being over the top salacious! Did they even study the 20s?? My Grama was a mean little flapper & sure times were wild, but Margo wouldn't have looked like she was going to a Led Zep concert with that hairdo!! I went becuz I'm a Pitt fan but they managed to make him pathetic also! I don't know but sad I spent $15 to watch an elephant take a dump, Sorry!!

Sorry, Cheryl, but this film is for people who understand and appreciate cinema. You're evidently someone who doesn't watch many films and simply doesn't understand challenging art or much about art in general. And that's fine, being simple is fine. But you don't know what you're talking about, and should just stick to Tom Cruise films and your Spider-Mans like every other mainstream viewer. It's fine if you don't like arthouse films like 'Babylon,' but it's not because they're bad -- you just don't get them.
