Just practicing isn't enough, you also have to run diagnostics every now and then, so to speak. Recently I took some time to check my cutting mechanics on soaked tatami mats.
Of course there are always things to work on, and in this case it's my Zwerchhau (thwarting cut/hew) in particular that still has sketchy edge alignment. This strike is one of the Master Cuts in the German longsword tradition, as shown in the Medieval and Renaissance manuals. A very effective counter technique when done right.

It's odd. I actually like seeing my favorite KZfaq creators doing in-video ads because it means they are more secure. Also, I find most creators I like actually recommend good products. So it doesn't feel annoying at all. Seriously. I wasn't being sarcastic, I promise. Honestly.

Some of the channels I watch, like Skall, manage to do it smoothly, so it's not all in your face, and in a way that kinda gets you even a bit genuinely interested in what is being advertised. As I see it, if done right, it's a three-way win-win situation, where we win because of great content, the content maker wins because they are able to continue doing and making a living off of what they love, and of course, the company that is getting appreciably delivered attention. I'm fine with that.

There should be a company that makes cutting mats or something. Surely there is a big enough community for it, also an idea would be as most enthusiasts enjoy and respect the art/sport of it that a discount would be made to return cut/used mats. Recycling them to be made again and beneficial to a frequent sword demonstrator or someone training. I don't know but it seems it is a market yet be filled.

Oh hey, I got something you might wanna try: reslashable targets. I have a large section of property and I leave a small section untrimmed. When the grass gets about waist height, I scythe it down. Then I collect the grass around some cord in limb sized sections and bind it with some cord. Trim it a little if you want it to be neat. Then take the cord in the middle and tie it to something high (I do a tree branch). The added challenge is slashing it so finely, the bundle doesn't move much. To reuse, I glue it back with ordinary school glue and set it aside for a day. Put a cord along the cut line and adjust the target an inch or 2 down so that you don't hit the line. I practice kendo a little.

Hello, Skallagrim! You have a great channel and most of your videos are both entertaining and educational. Hope I'll see a lot more of them. And a little suggestion: I know you did a lightsaber video in the past, but maybe you can have another one, now basing on more in-depth information about the weapon and it's actual (fictional :)) properties? And give us a little analysis on what real-world fencing styles and techniques can be used in lightsaber fencing? As a 30+ years SW fan I think it would be great :).

Your form has definitely improved in the last couple years; keep up the good work. You do still blink/squint a lot instinctively at the point of contact, which may be making your stroke stick & drag from being tense-body. That's a tough instinct to overturn, comes hardwired in the brain. Of course, it usually looks to me like most HEMA people are leaning/dragging on cuts, so maybe it's a style/intention difference. (I learned a more snappy cutting style a zillion years ago and have spent more time on an axe than a sword since then.)

all the cuts from strange angles like Zwerchhau... looking at the results from you cutting in a controlled environment with a fairly easy to cut target, and the sparring videos of some world class longsword fighters in action, I cannot imagine how theses cuts would be effective in a real combat situation. correct me if i am wrong, but most of the time i see people hitting with the flat or very poor edge alignment when using Zwerchhau.

Good video Skall. A bit of advice: for the thwart cut, one thing I noticed is that you brought the blade behind you head. This is something my instructor refers to as helicoptering, and it leads to you being vulnerable to a cut from above or being otherwise struck in the arms, pushed backwards, etc. How we solve this at Armoured Company of the Sword is we transition to Crown guard during the cut to keep our blade and guard in front of us.

+Skallagrim I dont know if you'll read this , also it was a comment meant for one of your other video ,but if you do:- The drop in views , might be due to people not being interested in the content anymore , but the channel is how it always was , so if the views drop it's not your fault. But then again I think people prefer videos on 1)firearms , 2)more discussions on HEMA techniques (like you did wit halfswording, guard stances etc) 3)debunking myths on HEMA/medieval era etc 4) professional HEMA tournaments 5) Rants on weapon bans and stuff 6)Criticizing , weapons/fighting/historical 'accuracy' in games, movies etc and also historical manuals/scriptures 7) Also videos on making tools like you did wit flintknapping 8) Something new I guess ? The weapon , reviews are something I enjoy , but doesnt mean everyone will and might , but they should not stop , they should always be there as for me it has been quite informative and helpful , even tho I havent bought anything yet (teenager with tight budget :P) , so it's more like each to their own interests ! I see no problem with the content on my end. That is all !

Specter 04 I think other than the change in the suggestions algorithm, the drop in views is simply because it's a niche. Ive been around for a few years, but there is only so much interest I have for something I will never buy (and let's face it, the vast majority of viewers aren't going to buy swords) A lot of the appeal was the semi-scholarly approach. He was very relatable and hardly spoke about things like a historian, but he was very enthusiastic and did know more about the topics enough to educate the average viewer. It was new and interesting to me then, now it's kinda meh. It's like we were learning about this stuff together, except he was 1 step ahead of us and teaching the new stuff he just learned. After all this time Ive just picked up enough from a topic im only somewhat interested in that I'm not jumping on every new video. Also there's no sword reviews I'm waiting for from a particular sword I was interested in he showed at the end of some video. There used to be a bigger sense of anticipation, now Idek what hes gonna do next. That's why I think he can't attract new views and is losing some old ones, but he still has a solid core audience. I can see this channel becoming more like Matt Eastons, both in views and content

+Nestor R. I understand very well that the weapon reviews may not interest everyone equally and afterall not everyone can afford all of weapons shown ! But should just be there incase someone wants to buy them , as his reviews have a certain poise and to me are quite reliable and trustworthy. So he should do the reviews and other fun stuff I mentioned , simultaneously , in my opinion! Personally I like the reviews as well since I very much want to get into HEMA one day !

Thanks for the input. Not sure why but most HEMA videos actually don't get a lot of views. Particularly the tournament footage got very little attention, as did most technique demonstrations. The flintknapping videos also didn't do terribly well. The other suggestions I agree with.

Hey Skall. I have a brace of heavy steel billets as long as most men's at arms that I acuminated in my travels. They look a bit like caesellum kind of guillotinous slag- enthrusted iron but apparently they can cutlass than scythought they coude and scarf more likely to give someone a HEMAtoma than end them rightly. They weigh my bandeau'n sometimes and my flanks get scabbard since I'm an aguigeously poor buckler. I spatha be careful or I'll lose my waisted grip and epee my self. It'll be curtanas for my wafflesolleret Knikes. Estok myself twice in the shoulder and gott tang it, that was no tickler. It was a greavous injury. It seems spike I've seen you cut quillions of things annellet me tell you, the falx is it was khophen kinda dull, I have to seax I retreated from most of your edgier assaults on scimilacrums. They armingling in my memories like the pressionism of ricasso. I like this video a HECAvalot more. This tine your use of jibs and the mucronating bolocution of your stylet keened my interest. Your rapier wit hath slipped my skiver to skewer your schooling , I now get the thrust of your pointiard. I have a fuller appreciation for the engart of swipery, I can no longer feint disinterest. I see that I have had my guard up far too lunge and had twarted your best efforts to thrust your puissance up among my puss. So to speak. I should have paid more attention to your forte' or fifty videos you posted ephore this. I should pommel myself for the ignorance I have saddled myself with and make Skalling my forte'. Awesome video! I'm a huge golf Enthusiast especially when it comes to technique. I am seeing a lot of similarities between undercutting The Sword and the golf swing. There are definitely a tremendous amount of similarities with the leverages in the body and especially the wrist too. I'm assuming there are many different techniques with swords as to if you want to use more or less wrist or more or less body or more or less arm motions Etc?

Seconded. I always find it hilarious when I'm buying new razors how distinctly different the marketing and quality is. On one side we have navy blue and red stripes, X-treme, power cut, camo, and on the other side we have soft pinks and lavenders, dinky plastic handles, and names that sound like perfumes. One I once saw was 'Venus Soliel'. Seriously? I'll have better luck with something that is ACTUALLY SHARP.

This is simply not true and it's hilarious when people repeat this feminist nonsense. If you can grow a full beard, try shaving your face with a women's razor. I GUARANTEE you will cut yourself. The one time I shaved with my moms 'pink' razor I cut myself 5 times. On average, with a men's razor? I cut myself maybe once a month, shaving daily. Women razors are designed for legs, men for faces. End of discussion really...

Dear Mr. Skallagrim,I love the Channel and keep up the great content. I was wondering if it is in fact possible for a person to cut there own head off with their own sword? Is there a technique to achieve this and do you know of any case in history when this has happened? Bye for now. T.

Noice. Just a quick question, what happens with all the bits of sliced up mats? Do they compost down? Recycled ??

I may sound clueless posting this, but I have got a very coarse and thick beard and a very sensitive skin, so I rarely use a razor. Plus I like the easy shave of the electric hair trimmer.

Question re: the zwerchau (and false edge cuts generally): Do you think they are intended to open the opponent up for a more direct blow or to do serious harm themselves? I ask because I tried a false edge cut the other day -- the Zwerchau? Cut the bottle but not cleanly, several times. Tried it on rolled newspaper... not much of a cut. This leads to a question: Were cuts like this intended to be lethal or just a strike to open the opponent up (pun intended) to a follow up? Like, zwerchua to the head, ouch, that hurt, he's bleeding, but not incapacitated, just distracted, then cut him with something else? I never thought about this before, but.... is it feasible to deliver a zwerchau quick enough to land it in combat that has sufficient force behind it for more than a tip cut or harassing wound? I ask because often any strike with a practice sword is treated as if it would wound, but if I cut with a sharp, unless I'm very deliberate, I can't generate the power to cut. And in a real fight you wouldn't have the time to be deliberate or if you did the opponent would see it coming.

Anyone know if there are any good channels for Aisan weapons? I’ve watched a lot of Skall’s videos on European weapons but I’m curious as to what else is out there.
