We might think we know the names of swords, but often we have been misled. Well it's time to clear the confusion, if there is any confusion to be had for your understanding of proper sword names might be right, or is it?

A bastard sword is called a bastard sword because while it is a longsword and designed to be used primarily in 2 hands, the smaller size and shorter handle makes it more effective to be used in 1 hand if you wanted to. It isn't as good as an arming sword in that regard, or as good as a larger longsword used 2 handed, but it can do both well enough. So it is sort of the bastard child between the two.

I think I may've figured it out: -Dagger - to stab things, carve flutes and cut your dinner -Shortsword - halfway between daggers and arming swords. Mostly for stabbing, but it can cut. -Arming Sword - standard one-handed swords. Best balance, and work nice with a shield. -Bastard Sword - halfway between an arming sword and a longsword. More versatile than other types, and my personal favourite -Longsword - the large, two-handed sword, that isn't meant to be used with a shield or just one hand (which isn't to say that you can't, but it's a bad idea). This is the point where swords start leaning away from finesse and towards brute force. -War Sword - halfway between longsword and greatsword: more in reach and force, but less in control. Defintely can't be used with one hand. -Greatsword - the largest type of sword. Made with the simple purpose of "pulverize". It has the impressive reach and probably quite some momentum.

It's a game. If you wanted to make it more realistic, think of HP as physical stamina, and take direct damage with crits. Your "Wounds" = Constitution (equivalent). I heard they’re called longerswords
@lordtelion5 жыл бұрын
I thought that Aragorn's sword was a bastard sword due to the fact that part of what formed the handle was actually just an extended pommel, meaning it was designed for efficient use of single and two handed grips.
@arkhamasylum89725 ай бұрын
The bastard sword is a long sword variant so Aragorn's sword would still be a long sword.
@arielzapanta35335 жыл бұрын
short sword (1h + shield option) arming sword (1h + shield option) bastard sword (hybrid 1h or 2h) broad sword (2h) long sword (2h) great sword (2h) can you also talk about other culture's swords.. like rapier? zweihander? kris? samurai etc?

So, would you classify the Stark sword Ice as a greatsword or a longsword?
@295Phoenix7 жыл бұрын
I forgot what Ice looked like in the show, but in the book it was longer than Robb was tall...definitely a greatsword.
@DavidbarZeus17 жыл бұрын
295Phoenix Okay, the Valyrian Steel replica of Ice is 57.5 inches long, and the blade itself is 44 inches. Is it big enough to classify as a true greatsword, or is it a longsword?

Wow, so even before having the Dragon Slayer Guts sword still made the great-swords pale in comparison. Now I understand why Solange's movements in Code of Princess are so different from most other games, she's just wielding her real great-sword realistically.
@Actorclown6 жыл бұрын
For video games & D&D it helps to merge groups of weapons sometimes. 5th edition D&D pared back the amount of weapons from 3rd edition a lot. Got rid of bastard swords altogether and made longswords versatile. Meaning you can wield in one or two hands. Two hands doing more damage. Looks like the arming sword in D&D, the old longsword, went the way of the dodo in 5e. Really cool to here your boisterous thoughts on the subject Shad.
@sauderdarcher27986 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Your video cleared up what type of sword I have and now I know what the proper damage is that I'll be giving the zombies. I did see once in a book of arms about the Arming sword and I thought it was odd they were calling a long sword an arming sword but I remis I never looked into it. Thank you again!

I think most understand that when we're playing fantasy medieval type games that we go by their classifications, not historically but... if it's a game like Kingdom Come or Mordhau... they should at least attempt it to be correct.

What about the term "Broadsword?" I always heard that growing up...
@blakewerner54664 жыл бұрын
Donald Fischer the broadsword term actually refers to a basket hilted sword (think the swords you see in the renaissance) it’s a rather thin sword more akin to a rapier than anything else, kinda weird it’s referred to as a broad sword but eh
@donaldfischer70634 жыл бұрын
@@blakewerner5466 I always thought the basket hilted sword that resembles a rapier but a little thicker was the Claymore (common Scottish sword, correct?)
@blakewerner54664 жыл бұрын
Donald Fischer the claymore is the Scottish version of the basket hilted sword though it’s more closely related to a long sword or short sword than a broadsword
@capslockbusted3 жыл бұрын
It was a retronym from the age of rapiers. Since all medieval swords were broader than a rapier, they were all generally referred to by this term. The Scottish "broadsword" was contemporary to the rapier but was far more similar to the then old-fashioned medieval types. Probably the only example of a weapon being called that while still in common use.
@AdlerMow5 жыл бұрын
Shad, please make a video on why on the advantages of a shortsword and in what circunstances you should use it instead of a longer sword. I think they are easier to hide/smuggle, and can be used as a parring dagger.
@herrheinzfritz5 жыл бұрын
the second one from the end (between a greatsword and long sword) was often called a war sword. And they wouldnt be carried, but much like a greatsword would be taken on campaign as part of a knights kit and utilized specifically on the battlefield, rather than as a sidearm
@Phurzt5 жыл бұрын
Everything I know about swords from Monster Hunter lines up with the info from this video. First, Greatswords are body length maybe a bit bigger. (Also body width, and maybe a bit bigger) Second, I knew that arming sword wasnt a longsword from the start, because it's not Katana shaped.
@paolomorresi31839 жыл бұрын
"Wait, you're missing the point. The longsword can be used one-handed without the proper feat, that's why it's called a LONGSWORD! And of course it does 1d8 instead of a d10." Joking aside, I really hope this video will clear the confusion. Anyway, I would say it's MAAASSIVE, as you say. We could call it a Greatvideo, couldn't we?

@Shadiverity I've been getting more interested with scottish highland martial arts and am curious as to the use of the claymore (the big one since the broadsword was called that as well). Since it's in that grey area between long and great sword, I'm curious if it might have been used as a big longsword, or if it had to use a different fencing style entirely?
@MinnaMe015 жыл бұрын
I’ve been watching your videos too much, actually got all of those right!
@Zaidon75 жыл бұрын
During your Mordhau examination video when you looked at weapons, you called that longer version of the long sword a "war sword". Is that really about the size of the "unnamed" one you have here? Is "war sword" really a term?
@thecrystallizedpodcast49505 жыл бұрын
This is an old video so Shad probably didn't know what to call the unnamed one at the time, and a warsword is an actual thing so yeah.

Hey do you think you can help me out? A long LONG time ago I owned a sword with no tip rather it was smooth and it was big enough to be a sword but small enough to be considered a knife/ dagger for the healt (or however you spell it.) both at the top near the blade and bottom where you'd put the pommel was these round flat guards making it hard to switch hands. It also came in a leather sheaf with some kind of metal at the bottom and seemed to be made for the side instead of the back. You have any idea what kinda sword/ blade this was?

I do like your opinions of them so thanks Shadiverisity for correcting some of their mistakes i love your videos :)
